Actually you get guests a lot slower if they have access to the swing. I think it might have something to do with it being occupied so guests think it's not available and leave.

I still remember the "traveling petting zoo with a goat" that was at a craft fair. Turned out it was literally one goat, but like 100s of people all around the 1 goat. The guy running the "zoo" said the craft fair said there would only be a few dozen people there, maybe 2 dozen kids, so the fair didn't want to pay for much, but every kid in town just walked there to see the "zoo."

@@607 Maybe a decade ago. I've seen much better "traveling zoos." Where they've had a lot of tents, with animals packed in cages with tiny walkways. One had an elephant. There just wasn't enough room for the animals and felt sad to see, but what do you expect with a traveling zoo?

@@gamesthatiplay9083 Actually a traveling zoo with only a goat is probably the best there could be short of not existing at all. So no the ones you saw weren't "better", they were objectively worse, with more animals leading miserable lives behind bars for your enjoyment and the peddler's profits. Good thing these "zoos" are on the way out these days, they're awfully inhumane. Unless they're in properly sized enclosures for conservation or breeding programs, exotic wild animals should be left in their native environments.

I still prefer this game over Planet Zoo just like I prefer RCT over Planet Coaster. Maybe its because the modern games are like: Played 5 hours designed a single coaster/enclosure gets bored. Play the Tycoon games 5 hours desiged a whole park and have lot of fun doing so. Maybe its just me.

That's exactly why I love these games so much. You can spend 30 minutes building really basic stuff and you have a small functional theme park or zoo. If you want you can still spend a lot of time on it, but you don't have to to make something nice.

in planet zoo and planet coaster, every single thing is a time investment and wrestling with the unintuitive building controls. it makes doing anything make me feel stressed. making something in rct and zt is just fun. goofing off and enjoying yourself feels like the main goal instead of creating some ultra realistic hyper-optimized simulation and management game. I exclusively play in sandbox bc I can’t be bothered to worry about prices, and find fun in the creativity. somehow I find the more open designs of the newer games more restrictive because of the barrier to entry and differences in time investment.

The animal happiness bar is such an important part of Zoo Tycoon. Like there's no reason to feel bad about the Gazelle in the 2 tile exhibit, just check his happiness stat, he LOVES it.

You could built the path to the side instead of straight. The gazelle and swing with just one fence at the narrow ends of the path, the restaurant at the two tile wide side. It's technically one fence hence one tile smaller.

Seeing how simple and limited the algorithms are that Zoo Tycoon 1 has makes me doubly thankful for how sophisticated RCT’s are. Played ZT1 a lot when I was a kid, but was always a bit miffed about the dumb Maintenance Worker AI, and the lack of an assignment area for them.

I loved the Zoo Tycoon games (though definitely not as much as the RollerCoaster Tycoons). As a kid I thought all the tycoon games were connected, and luckily I didn't play any of the bad ones trying to cash in on the name. I played RollerCoaster 1&2, Zoo 1&2, and Golf Resort 1, which all have decent numbers, looking at Wikipedia. Anyway, rambling about two-decade old games aside, it's nice to see that you're evil in multiple games. I guess.

I really appreciate your videos. I played all of these tycoon games when I was young, and was frustrated by these hidden parameters and finally got stuck on a map that I attempted over and over. I probably didn't have any entertainment because I was spending all the money on animal habitats.

Oh hey I remember this game. It was on the local library computer when I was a kid. I remember noticing the steadily updated saves it had and ruined them all by making peepee enclosures and getting everything burned to the ground before overwriting the saves. Good times.

Maintenance workers are still tough to manage though, since sometimes it seems the one on the opposite side of the park with no valid pathing would get assigned a task, instead of the one standing right next to it...

Love the extreme qualifications clarifying not every guest is instantly happy if your animals are happy. I remember playing this game growing up and I can't tell you how many guests would be maximum angry with complaints like "Zebra 23 is overjoyed 🤬"
