Hmmm? A 'non-porous' stone will 'soak in' the oil, something not right there?

Finally, a video with a good explanation on why you want to use a soapstone. Thank you 😊

Merci beaucoup Dan ! I'm doing it today, following your advice. How do you do the maintenance after cooking ? Merci !

confused "soapstone is non porous" (rubs it with oil) "that oil will soak into the stone" which is it?

Was thinking same thing. :-)

This is why I don't think it's necessary to oil the soapstone

Agreed, if it's non-porous, shouldn't need to be seasoned. In fact, oiling it won't penetrate the stone. Anything cooked on it should burn right off the next time it's brought up to temp.

I purchased a soapstone about 6 months ago for my Kamado Joe JR and I didn’t season it, I used a heat deflection plate put my soapstone on of the grill at low temperature cause I was doing a reverse seer stake halfway trough the cook I went to turn my stake, I noticed a indentation in the stone and because it’s was dark out I continued with the low cook, once I reached my internal temperature I took off the deflector plate and went to inferno mode on the soapstone. The next day when I opened my Kamado up I noticed a big chunk was taken out of the soapstone and I checked the ashes on the bottom of the firebox and found the piece that came off and I was so devastated that I just returned it. Then I watched your video on how to season it prior to my first cook and now I have a new soapstone and I’m going to try this on the coming weekend. Any tips for me

I didn’t prep mines like this and after the first cook it looks really burnt. Any tips on cleaning the soapstone after using it?

I don’t ever clean mine. I simply rotate it for each cook. This way the for every cook I have a surface that was cleaned with direct heat from the coals during the previous cook.
