So just a note: The "feel" of a pencil in no way informs about its quality in pigmentation & layering. Its main value is for those who want a nicer coloring experience that doesn't require very much pressure (like for those who fatigue easily or have joint pain). There's always going to be inconsistency in "feel" throughout most given sets. That's bc Reds are always going to have softer pigment, whilst Yellows tend to be sourced from harder minerals. The exception to this is Caran D'ache who specifically & intentionally creates their formulations to offer a consistent experience throughout. So their Reds/Warm colors are made with harder materials and their Yellows/Greens have softer materials added to them in order for their "feel" to be evenly matched. So if you prefer the softest pencil to avoid exertion, then go with Prismacolor. But keep in mind that their creaminess whittles their pencils down faster, which means you waste more pencil and you need to crank a sharpener more often (not good for hands or the wallet). If you prefer a silky feel, Polychromos also gives a great experience -- YET it doesn't whittle down as fast. In a coloring test, Polychromos fills over 3x to 4x more pages than Prismacolor. It means they're more cost-effective in the long run, & they don't need as much sharpening. Their pointiness are also great for detailed work. Now if you prefer a more consistent feel throughout your set, then Caran D'ache is your best bet. You'll never have to worry about varying your pressure while coloring, bc each pencil feels the same. They offer great pigmentation despite not being super creamy or super silky, and they also don't need alot of sharpening. Another key feature is that Caran D'ache Pablos are designed to work on ANY paper you use. Unlike Derwent, Polychromos, and Prismacolor, which sometimes require a specific type of paper to get the most benefit, Caran D'ache offers reliability & consistency in their feel & laydown regardless of paper medium used.

Thanks for your comments. You mention top level name brands. However many shop by price. I'd like to see a less than $25 review of pencils.

This is an excellent and quick way to get alot of info across love this comment. It's true though. The softness of a pencil is really not the sole definitive reason for choice unless you have infinite funds and the perfect paper and sharpener etc and all of those allow you to not experience any unnecessary added pain to painful hands and joints etc. Then yeah prismacolor is the cheapest softest known. But there's some incredibly close and personally I believe better, or atleast each have their purposes, options. But even saying prisma is known to be consistently the softest in the lead makeup itself, it doesn't mean anyone even holds a pencil the same way etc. I find I struggle with prismas sometimes with my arthritis, and the constant sharpening is a whole second issue. I'd love to find one that would make a good addition to prismacolors, that would layer well on top of them when the prismas have hit their limits especially, and especially for highlights and shadows and which blends best with solvents etc. I guess I'll be adding those to my own testing videos lists. Lol.
@unboundbytiffany Жыл бұрын
@@metatechnologist there's tons of them on KZbin. The cheaper ones are all pretty similar if you know what your looking for. Some are just awful, but artxx is actually pretty good. I hated them before for so long until I tried them in a different sharpener and using solvent. It ended up being pretty comparable at a very inexpensive price. Anything cheaper just doesn't seem worth it to me compared to prismas or better. :)

You should try the Marco Renoir and Holbein Artist, both are softer than Prismacolor! 😊 As an artist, I prefer layering and lightfastness as opposed to softeness, so it's Polychromos and Pablos for me! But a fun video to watch! 💖

My fav is a combo. Polychromos with Prismacolor Premier! Polychromos can layer until the cows come home however Prismacolor is great for blending. So, with my flower coloring books I love Prismacolor because I need to blend a lot but they do tend to have a wax bloom fairly quick if I try to layer. That’s where my Polychromos comes in. So. I love them together.
@juliem42595 жыл бұрын
You might like the Derwent Procolour pencils. For me, I don't have a knack for using Polys and Prismas together but they are my top two favorite pencils. I like different brands on different books as well. Marco Raffine work so nice with Create Space paper where Polys don't. I love Prismas in Magical Jungle but not in Lost Ocean. The Procolour pencils are a dream in World of Flowers and I have been blending them with the Prisma colorless fine point/chisel marker. It feels like painting to me because the pigments blend out so smoothly. The only colors that ghost on the reverse image are the reds and not enough to ruin the coloring for that page by any means. I could go on and on. Coloring is so fun. Cheers!

I think the softest ones that I have are my wood-box full set of Holbeins. Paid a fortune for them, but MAN...soooo amazing! I think after that it's a toss up between Prismacolours and the Black Widow's. The Derwent Coloursoft are actually pretty smooth too. My full set o' Prismas does give me the ever popular 'broken core'. I do have a (60?) piece set from back when they were still made in Canada (iirc) by Berol. Those ones...cores are fine. Don't break. And seem...different to use. Can't quite put my finger on it.

Excellent! This was the most fun I have had online in quite some time! How fun this was! I have only been adult coloring for 8 months and have become enamored with soft core colored pencils. This has to be in the "job description" before I invest my money on a new set of pencils. In this short period of time, this 60yo man has amassed 12 different sets of pencils totaling over 1,180 pencils! I have a majority of the pencils you tested and was so fascinated with this test! A couple of budget friendly pencils that I think are much softer than your winner, believe it or not, are FEELA and GUANG HUI and I love my flagship Faber-Castell the most at the end of the day!

It should be done like Ranked Choice Voting. Set up each pencil from softest to hardest & have multiple people color (ranging from expert colorists to amateurs). Take a percentage of which pencils are consistently ranked at the top across all votes, and those are your winners. The ones who are consistently ranked the worst are your losers.

This was fun! Good job guys! I do love my prismas though they can smudge but I'm a leftie and most pencils smudge. I had the scholars first and still love them though I did eventually cave and buy the premiers, mostly cause I wanted the 150 colors. If money is tight go with the scholars, some of the colors are not as good but most of them are close. Guang Hui (spelling?) seem pretty good, though I just got mine not that long ago and haven't used them to much yet. Lots of colors and not expensive, even here in Canada (about $40). Prisma Primiers are currently about $200 on amazon for the 150 set.

I originally thought it would be polychromos, then switched it a few seconds after. I just know that my prismas break while sharpening. It irks me so much. But I have never paid full price for them as I get them in pencil crayon packs at the second hand store for like under 50 cents a pencil. So I really can’t complain. This was an awesome video.
@ColoringBliss5 жыл бұрын
Great way to get your pencils! It could also be one reason some of them break...they haven’t been handled correctly in the past. Thank you for a really fun and interesting video. My very first set of pencils were the 60 pack of Prisma Scholars which I added about 20 open stock premiers and became addicted to the White Premier (which I use with all my sets now). Of all the pencil sets I have, my full set of Premiers are my favorite but I always use my Scholars with "createspace" paper on its own or with a waterbased foundation. Although I am addicted to Inktense too. While I have open stock polychromos to go with a Lyra Rembrandt Poly set, I find my hand gets tired faster using oil-based than with Premiers but they are fun to work with too. ☺

Sorry l didn’t see that ,foes that paper leave white specks that your pencil doesn’t cover ? I cannot find that paper in Australia.
@ColoringBliss5 жыл бұрын
The white specks are there because of texture or tooth in the paper. The tooth is important for building up layers. There are ways to get rid of that look. In your country, look for a sturdy paper that has a bit of a texture...if it’s too smooth it will be difficult to layer and blend.

@YourMajesty1433 жыл бұрын
This is more about feel than it is about quality. Caran D'ache may not be the softest, but it is definitely high quality in terms of its pigmentation and layering. If your priority is about the experience of coloring rather than the results of your artwork, then this showdown might be meaningful to you. But there were alot of inconsistencies throughout that I noticed. For instance the Raffini which at one point was a "No Winner", beat out the Pelikan which took down many of the pencils that stood up against Raffini & other winners of high quality. You also have to remember that the relative softness of a pencil varies throughout a set. Reds are always going to have the softest pigment, while yellows are typically made up of harder minerals. Caran D'ache intentionally formulates their colors so that each pencil feels consistently the same throughout. In a video I saw by one of their brand representatives, it seems they have made their Red/Warm pencils a bit harder and added more softer waxes to the Yellow/Greens to get them to evenly match. So unlike Prismacolor, where the feel of a pencil will slightly vary from color to color, Caran D'ache offers a more consistent experience throughout so that you won't have to vary your pressure & will always know what to expect as you color.

That was a fun test to watch! I thought it was interesting the Arteza did that well. They are very inexpensive. I thought Blick might preform better. Many interesting results. CrazyArt? I haven't liked those since I was a child. I know weird. I'm 50. I like that you had others try the same test and get the same result. Thank you not practical for many of us to do at home.

I thought Blick would do better too. We are thinking of more tests like this to take advantage of this large collection of pencils.

Bic Conte are the hardest pencil I've ever tried. I'm surprised they were "softer" than the Crayola. But in vibrancy, Crayola wins.

There were so many surprises for me as I watched back what happened. I guess that’s how we know the experiment worked.
