Your channel needs to carry a health and safety warning for the wallet. I hadn’t even heard of the Stanley 48 Tongue and Groove Plane until 9 minutes 26 seconds ago, allowing for one second to click on the video. Now I realise just how desperately I need one and my woodworking can’t possibly move forward without it. I know people think modern technology is very clever, which it undoubtedly is, but these guys who invented these manual tools that worked so reliably weren't no slouches. Great video, thank you.

I purchased one at an estate auction in May of 2019 for $70. Complete and no pitting. Just a 2 hour clean up and sharpening. This estate auction was a huge collection - I believe it was almost 500 items 98% Stanley. I spoke to the auctioneer after and he said they sold $50,000 worth of Stanley tools. I thought the prices were a bit high................ On 8/8/19 the best on e-bay were $90 and were missing irons. Today, 8/18/19 - I can only find one 49 on E-bay - and they want $240....... I agree it is fun - and it really works.........

I'm in a collector's market, so No. 48s are usually over $80 at local meetups. I have one that "works," but the screw that attaches the fence to the body is shop-made (not by me), & doesn't hold everything together as tightly as it should.

@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 2 жыл бұрын
Depending on the size of yours. You can probably use the tongue and groove plain irons from Veritas. Otherwise if you go on the parts division group on Facebook someone on there might have an old replacement. You can also go down the list of online sellers on handtoolfinder.com Most of them have a bucket of parts and irons that they can pull from and you make it lucky that way.

Ok...question for you, I'm going to be building a blanket chest, that the top will also be a seat. I wanted to join the material vertically with tongue and groove, and put a chamfer on each shoulder, just to add some style, rather than just a flat surface. I've heard some say to not glue the tongue and groove joint, to allow movement. But being it will also be a seat, I'm looking for structural strength...glue the joint ??
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 2 жыл бұрын
You may want to send me an email with drawings. I am wondering what the TnG are for and how they are used in the top. Usually TnG is used where you can not glue the joints. If you can glue it then the TnG would just weekend the joint. I do not always see replays on here. jameswright@woodbywright.com

@royseafus7399

It should be off centre! The thicker side is the face. When it wears down it won't show the tongue, rather becoming an even width to the thin side over time.

@@WoodByWright Thank you. I ask because I tend to skew my cuts with a combination plane such that I don't get a perfectly flat tongue. I am sure it is just a practice issue, but I do drift a bit. I figured that because the plane body touches wood longer with these tongue/groove planes the cut would be straighter, but I may be wrong.

I have a question for you. I have a Fulton "No. 48" model and I notice that when I tighten the iron on the left (the wider iron), the swing fence gets tight to move because it's screw rubs up against the bottom of the iron, because of how the design is. Is there a way you can get around that? I have been loosening the iron slightly and the fence will swing freely, but I imagine that's not the best way to do it.
@WoodByWright
@WoodByWright 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I have not noticed that on mine. I'm not sure why it would do that.
