I have one of the original Galoob toys of the _D_ . Its frontheaviness due to the extreme weight of the primary hull bothered me even as a kid, since it is unable to sit upright unless you stack something underneath the saucer. And yet it also looks strange if you display the two hull sections separately.

All ships from Discovery. Why so much negative space? Why interrupt the saucer with big gaps of nothing? No country's navy would build an aircraft carrier with a giant hole directly center through the hull going down to the ocean. So planes would have to launch around the big hole, kind of like crew members having to walk all the way around giant gaps in the saucer through the four "spokes" just to get to the bridge. Idiotic.

A couple of points; 1) Intrepid class ships were more suited to the front lines than guard duty. 2) Scaling of hull designs (for the Yeager class) was not unheard of in Star Trek, the K'vort and B'rell class Klingon ships come to mind.

While those points are valid, the intrepid sa best quality is speed, it was never really envisioned to be doing patrols or anything. It was envisioned to be able to quickly get places, use the extensive science suites at its disposal and quickly return. Personally I felt it would have been better used in information gathering what with the speed and the sensor systems at their disposal. When you take into consideration that they are upscaling a significantly smaller ship, this means they would have to completely redesign the inside of that ship, creating decks etc it was never meant to have in order for it to work with the scaling of the pre-made Intrepid command hulls. When you only give it a cursory think you really only take in the eyesore of the outside but you need to think of the work that would need to be put in to be able to marry the power systems, computer core, warp drive etc. This would really have taken nearly as much time as finishing the full intrepid or using one of the other ships in fleet such as the excelsior.

@@OneTrekMind I was talking more to the original commenters second point regarding the scaling of the Klingon ships rather than your own, the Birds of Prey having to retroactively be given lore about there being multiple sizes of the same class of ship due to the scaling seen on screen for instance has a similar problem though to a lesser degree. Either there has to be extra decks added or there is a lot of unused empty space. I think what makes the Yeager more problematic than these though is that this is meant to be essentially a fighter so smaller again than the Bird of Prey by around 40 meters I think, and while the Intrepid is on the smaller side it’s still a significant upscale. Then there’s the fact the Raider isn’t exactly a pretty ship in and of itself. I look forward to the upcoming videos and I’m glad to have found your channel.

For the Galaxy class a couple of things. If you want to have a detachable saucer it makes sense to stand that off from the secondary hill for collision avoidance, so you get a longer neck. If you want the nacelles above that saucer wit its giraffe neck your going to need quite long struts, which are pretty obvious weak points. If however you tuck the nacelles under the saucer you don’t need the super long struts neatly avoiding another problem with the design feature of having a detachable saucer.

I actually agree about the Galaxy Class (and certainly J). There was something about the general design language, proportions and window textures made the Galaxy class feel a bit... fake whenever it was on screen. I guess I'm more of a TOS person so I don't like computer spline curves in general on Trek ships. Voyager/Intrepid is not a favourite either. I know they used models but with the windows stretched on the saucer slopes there's this nagging 90s CGI projected texture vibe that breaks the realism usually provided by models. And yeah, nacelle line of sight sitting under the saucer makes it look a bit staggered/unbalanced.

One thing you guys are forgetting about the galaxy class, the galaxy class was designed to deliberately break into two separate sections. The saucer section was to be a lifeboat type while the stardrive section was to be the main combat unit. with more than half of the ships mass removed, the battle/stardrive section becomes more maneuverable and has more combat potential with the additional phaser strips mounted on the connector section. See the Episode ""Encounter at Farpoint". BTW, in the same episode, I think, is where we are told the stardrive/battle section naming.
@OneTrekMind
@OneTrekMind Ай бұрын
Raptor: No we didnt forget that bit. I would point out that in my eyes, the engineering section doesnt have any more or less weapons than the whole ship put together. I would also point out that if it was true that the galaxy was better at fighting when split in half, then all the Dominion War battles we see in DS9 should have seperated galaxy class ships no? We considered the ships as whole complete units.

It's good at times to see i'm not the only one that doesn't find the Galaxy all that aesthetically pleasing. Would i rate it as the ugliest Fed or even TNG ship? No. But it would definitely sit well in the lower half of the bunch. I think its main flaw is that they tried to convey size on a 4:3 ratio screen, and that made the ship bloated on more modern displays. As to what would be ugliest, that badge of honor would have to go to the Freedom class. Even for a kitbash, that design is just so lazy and visually disbalanced, it feels like it's gonna flip over every minute!

This is a hard question. For me personally? Single least appealing ship is the Yeager Class. I’m all for kitbashing, but it just feels too weird. Single least appealing era of design? Discovery, such as with the Walker Class. Too many bulky, ill-fitting hull plates/protrusions, with the square nacelles just not looking right. Honestly feels like a step backwards from the NX class. Probably gonna ignite a flame war with this lol, but favorite design lineage? Shangri-La or Constitution III, both made canon/invented for PIC S3. Just a really aggressive design that looks amazing. We, the people... love the Enterprise -D (see what I did there? ...cough...TOS The Omega Glory ) Plus the designer Andy Probert, wished me a happy Birthday once. No seriously. The engines of the Galaxy class are placed below the saucer, is an engineering decision. According to the original designer of the Galaxy Class Andy Probert, the classic constitution class has the engines in the wrong place. There present position, above the saucer is an engineering error. So Andy Probert places the engines bellow the saucer so that, from an engineering prospective it causes allot less stress and the ship can fly. True story.

You can tell by looking at the one built for ST III that it's obviously Romulan, it was even supposed to be in the dialogue of STIII that those Klingons stole that ship from the Romulans, to go after Genesis, but it was accidentally ommited.

@@peterkordziel7047 Raptor: true however the whole romulan bird of prey thing im not 100% on. My issue is that if you look at a Klingon BOP, the overall design queues are identical to the D7. The distinctive head with torpedo launcher, the thin neck, wide rear section and main wepaons on the arms lower down to create a triangle of fire with the torpedo tube. In my eyes the BOP makes more sense as a klingon deisgn than a romulan one. Just my head canon as im fully aware of the omitted lore for the BOP i just dont think it makes sense.

@@OneTrekMind Far as I can tell, the battle of Procyon V always happens in some permutation or another. It's the decider and the temporal cold war seems to have a large component of each side trying to set themselves up better or sabotage their enemies' preparation for the "next" iteration of it. If STO is to be believed (and STO has not been contradicted by any televised works on this point), the 1701-J, Universe class, is crucial to victory for people who don't want the galaxy turned into a giant Delphic Expanse. (It's the only ship we've got that can use the Tox Uthat correctly/powerfully enough to collapse the sphere network, apparently). Daniels was pretty adamant to Archer that the events he was giving Archer a sneak peak of in the battle NEEDED to happen, IIRC. It's a shame, because the other two 26th century temporal dreadnaughts, which the devs got to design from scratch, are IMO really nice designs that fit the existing design language of the Klingon and Romulan factions (with the caveat of being absolutely colossal and unwieldy to actually fly in missions/TFOs) but for the Starfleet one they were stuck with the random pizza cutter that Doug Drexler banged out on 48 hours notice without clear info on what the design was FOR.

I would say the Daedalus is ugly by intention. It's so early in the history of the United Earth Space Probe Agency that those designers haven't figured out the geometry best suited for star flight. That it can achieve faster than light speeds is all that matters. I would have said that the Galaxy class is the ugliest ship in Star Trek but then Discovery came along and gave us the Crossfield class. You talk about being reminded of Star Wars! The Discovery is straight out of the Star Wars universe. So the Crossfield class edges out the Galaxy class for that reason. Three small changes to the Galaxy class would make it so much prettier. 1)Turn the nacelles around so that the front becomes the back. 2) Make the nacelle struts tall enough so that the nacelles sit slightly higher than the saucer. 3)Make the nacelles a similar length to the saucer. Those small changes would make the ship so much more balanced. And therefore more attractive.

However, I do not understand how they were able to fit it to a condor like magic. Maybe it’s partly down to the D being my Enterprise, though my dad introduced me to TOS, it’s the Enterprise I grew up with but it’s definitely near my top 5 ships and top 3 Enterprises, it should be obvious as that’s the design I did for my profile pic. I also really love the Nebula and its variants, they were clearly meant evoke the Miranda of the TMP era and did so well. If I’m sticking purely to only ships seen onscreen and from what most consider the Prime Universe I would say my least favourite has to be the Defiant, I liked it for the story it told but it’s essentially a frisby with guns and no one can decide what the hell the front of it is. Is it for docking? Is it a detachable warhead (as I’ve heard in some areas)? I know they gave up on the whole needing sight to sight between the impulse engines, but at the power this thing is meant to give off the idea any of these characters were having children is ridiculous. My favourite ship will always be a fight between the Excelsior Refit Enterprise B (I’ve loved the Excelsior since the TMP era) and the Sovereign Enterprise E. I wish to god we got more TNG movies no thanks to the director of Nemesis who never bothered to watch a bloody episode on TNG nor the TNG movies and refused to listen when actors like Marina Sirtis and others explained their characters would not do what he was having them do. Also how many times did they have to SA Deanna Troi? Oh! She’s not been in a few episodes and she told the captain the bad guy was lying last time… I know why don’t we have her get mentally SA or physically assaulted, or inseminated by a speck of light… instead of, I dunno using the brains you originally wrote into the character leading to her becoming a freaking Commander! I think that if the D had even stuck with the fully circular saucer section it would have helped, it’s one of the Aspects of the New Ross Class that I think really works but I would assume that because it was a new show and a new Enterprise part of it was to step away from some of the design cues we were used to.

Bizzare reasons for not liking the J. Those Nacelles are not thin when the ship is so large. Also technology would advance so they would be extremely well bult and not at all flimsy. The J has cities inside it and have colonies. The Galaxy class is based on cruise ships so that is why it is shaped like that. The Yeager class was no more than a kitbash ship in the far background of DS9 that was just going to be a different shape to other ships. "The universe class is too big for it's own good! that's why it's Ugly!" It's also 200 year into the future from TNG and is a multi-generational Colony ship. Hence why it's much bigger. The ugliest Ship for me seen in canon is the Discovery. Not only is it the worse ship ever designed it's also from the worst Star Trek ever made.

I see a lot of delusional bias in this topic. So I would talk about actual stuff. So Beta and Gamma canons have a lot of abominable designs! But looking purely on canon Starfleet designs. No, it isn't Oberth. Without that ugly gondola and there are implications that it was swapable service module. It is actually quite good ship. The real stinker is of course the Curry. Like there is no worst abomination then that ship!

Raptor: you think the Curry Class is worse than say...the Hermes or Saladin?
@TheRezro

@@OneTrekMind Until you hate one nacelle designs in principle. They are just that. And no. It doesn't break Roddenberry rule because you did have two coils placed parallel in the same column. Yes. It was not as efficient as conventional solution, but those are meant to be cheap short range ships. While Curry is basically a Excelsior. But for some bizarre reasons massive gondola, what never meant to be used like that. Is pushed between nacelles, sticking weirdly forward the ship. Like why? I know it was meant to be a carrier. But this design make no sense and look horribly! And no. Excelsior Miranda argument do not make sense. If it wouldn't have this misplaced gondola it would be quite decent. But as it is, it is a crime of Trek design.
@TheRezro
@TheRezro Ай бұрын
@@OneTrekMind Also another issue is that parts from which Curry was made technically do have different scale. Enterprise class was notably smaller then the Excelsior. Yet, you have its could on weird misshaped Excelsior. Meanwhile design of Hermes line make absolutely sense! 2030's were fertile period in Starfleet design, because after incident with Klingons they find out that they ships are vilely inadequate for combat. Hermes using prototype of early Conie saucer (or derivative of older Bonaventure one). Was meant to be cheap scout. When Constitution was introduced, Saladin was introduced as cheaper destroyer version. Easier to mass produce and used for regional defense. Later Federation switch to more capable Miranda. Though line actually did continued with introduction of Akula refit. What did have two nacelles placed in way similar to older Apollo. Though Apollo was much larger surveyor, derivative probably from Einstein class aka Kelvin. In Beta canon there is distinct line of its derivatives. Like really cool Wilkerson class. Used primarily as regional defense ships. Line in fact did continued with Freedom and Challenger of Wolf 359 fame. Though those are much larger ships, from Lost Era jumbo revolution. Wilkerson itself was most likely replaced by Centaur.

@@OneTrekMind I hate the refit of the CrossField Class it is like their trying to ripoff Tron, also when the power goes out those nacelles are going to float away, we’re better off having our ships in one piece. With 32nd century ships it is like engineers quit half way though the building phase.

@@OneTrekMind I hate the refit which is the Neo Constitution Class, I don’t like the saucer and I don’t like nose cone above the deflector it ruined the design. This is what happens when you do a poor job mixing retro with modern designs. With The Neo Constitution Class I would get rid of that nose cone above the deflector and make the deflector larger and I would replace the saucer with a more futuristic Sovereign type saucer and I would remove the neck it is a huge weakness that even Krall took advantage of in Star Trek Beyond.
