This installation was designed and built by the USA as one of its global network of VLF stations to communicate with its submarines deployed around the globe (before satellite technology took over that task). It is so big because the radio waves it transmits and receives on are so l-o-n-g and the wire also needs to be l-o-n-g. The shape gives it the option to transmit/receive on any one of those six vectors/directions. It is powerful because it needs to transmit over very long distances. American personnel are stationed there to provide that service as a backup should satellites fail. Tourists visiting Ningaloo Reef on the west coast of North West Cape drive past this installation every day during the winter months to dive with the huge Whale Sharks that frequent the Reef at that time of year. It is located not far from the town of Exmouth in WA. I visited the area in 2012. Nothing was amiss. It is named in honour of a former Prime Minister of Australia. refer here: navy-radio.com/commsta/holt.htm

Good vid exposing another US Military base. By the way, Harold E. Holt was a much hated Australian Prime Minister who came up with the phrase: "All the way with LBJ!" over Australia's complicit participation in the US invasion and burning of Vietnam. He mysteriously disappeared while snorkelling just off the coast of SE Australia, the most persistent rumour citing a Chinese submarine for some reason.

I look out my window and can literally see the spot where Holt vanished. Go for a swim there mate, you'll be fine. I won't mention that in my life living here I've heard and even seen people washed up dead nearby. The largest sharks in the world scout these waters. A fool would think a man could survive and not have his body eaten. Take a good look at Portsea back beach and you tell me that a beach facing the roaring forties is safe for swimming. I won't even surf there, no locals would. It's insane how powerful the surf can be and rips on rocks are able to pull you out to sea, literally hundreds of metres from shore in mere seconds. He wasn't snorkeling, he was just swimming.

No, Harold disappeared near Portsea, Victoria, sort of diametrically opposite this site.

Learmonth is the closest airport. Think it's about 30K's - if I recall correctly - South of Exmouth. The VLF site is approx 15-20 K's North of Exmouth but it's been a while since I worked there.
