It's a Loram rail grinding train. It grinds the rail surface to the proper profile, prolonging the life of the track. The black tanks hold water to spray the area after they pass to prevent fires. What you thought were weights are the extra grinding wheels. If you can catch it working at night its quite a light show.

I saw it in action tonight. Came by then backed up, then kept going headed towards ayer.

It's a rail grinding train. It removes the surface imperfections from the rails.

That’s the Loram Rail Grinder, looks the same one that was grinding rail by my house earlier this year. They stopped on a sump siding in a community to refill water tanks off a fire hydrant.

I was actually surprised at how much of a difference it makes. You can hear it as well as the trucks roll over. They make a different tone.

its a rail grinder, with use the rails wear out, so the top surface must be reground periodically to restore it to proper shape the tanks likely have water so they can sprinkle over the tracks they just ground. often there will be a small hi-rail firetruck following behind with a guy in the back who can use a water cannon to put out any fires this creates which got past the sprinklers.

I never knew they resurfaced the rail like that. I just thought, (when one goes bad, replace it). It makes sense now because the Rails are all welded to one single piece, no more joints.

Rail Grinder to smooth out the tops of the rails. The yellow cars have and control the grinding wheels, and the black cars contain water to quench the sparks/any fires.

Looks like one of those trains that smooth out the rail heads grinding the surface

Well, for anyone older than ten and seen more than one train should know that's a rail grinder.

Not everyone runs across these... they repaired the railroad next to my work. I have never been around an active railroad every day nor paid attention. Most people won't know what it does. And if you read the comments, I left it up to viewers to tell me vs. just Google it. It's called "Interacting with viewers.". Lol

It grinds the track, I saw it come by.. the glowing red sparks flying. I didn't have time to record it sadly

You must be new to rail fanning; it's a rail grinder to restore top shape after being worn down by movement of the cars. They carry a lot of water to suppress fires started by the sparks. Owned by private contractors, but monitored by railroad inspectors.

Not that new, I've done it on and off my whole life. Loved trains since I knew what they were lol. Got a set every year for Christmas, HO scale and a couple G scale sets. The past 2 years I've been pretty heavy into it and decided to post on youtube. In all my 37 years, I've never come across a rail grinder, lol.

And it wasn't only until last year that (if memory serves me right... never does), that they start doing 40+mph through my area. Before they upgraded, the track speeds were around 25mph tops, maybe a little less. I've never seen so much equipment until the end of last year and all this year.
