The kite was used as an emergency antenna for a radio

Not with the depiction of the life raft. More likely it was as a signal for spotter aircraft to help locate a tiny raft on the ocean

In the picture the guy is sitting on a life raft, I'd say a rescue signal kite, there might be antenna possibilities, but radios at that time would sink anything smaller than a PT boat.

Life rafts had an emergency radio nicknamed a coffee grinder. Turn the crank and it would send SOS. Could also be used with a key on the radio to send Morse code. Also included in the kit were 2 means of lifting a wire antenna. One was a hydrogen balloon. The other was a box kite...I have one of the box kites

The kite assembly shown was part of the SCR-578 Gibson Girl emergency radio that was part of the lift-raft equipage during WW2.

The Ford drive shaft may have been inserted into the marsh as a survey marker or corner marker many years ago. Some deed somewhere may read " the property line runs from the large oak tree in a westerly direction X number of feet to the DRIVE SHAFT in the marsh then north east X number of feet to the well, poisened in 1855, and then on to ...".

The canister with the Kite was part of a British Afforce rubber survival dingy stowed on the heavy Bombers like the Lancaster. The kite was in fact the onboard locator transmitter Aerial

The box kite is called a Gibson Girl kite. It was part of an emergency US Navy radio kit that was part of some emergency life rafts during WW2. The operator would assemble the kite, attach a conductive string/wire, let the kite fly up a few hundred feet, then connect that to the radio set. The hope was that this wire would become a long radio antenna and would extend the reach of the emergency radio. There are no documented cases that this actually worked or helped save anyone. Thousands of Gibson Girl kites were sold as surplus, and can still be bought on eBay and in antique stores. I have one that I pull out once in a while, and it still flies great.

I have read reports of downed air crewmen using the kite to establish radio communication from their dinghy. Most lamented about how hard it was to get the kite to fly. However I think that is a British kite. I think that a vacuum canister of sodium nuggets and a balloon would have been more user friendly.

That rug beater is made of rattan, modern ones are plastic and total rubbish. A good rattan beater gives far better slap and removes dust more efficiently, a good whacking to the rug in fresh air does wonders to odour and overall cleanliness far better than hoovering.

And it's a good device to punish kids.... Had that experience when i was young. My mother taught us children punctuality with it! I still feel it when i'm coming late...😅
The last one is the box kite from a gibson girl emergency transmitter kit. It was used as the antenna. The radio for the kit wasn't big at all.

4:55 = An old rug beater. My German grandmother used one in the 1950s, and I have a couple for display because of that. 5:35 - Thanks to 'Time Team', I guessed Bronze Age for the spearhead!!

Recognized that worm gear right away. I have a 1926 Ford Model TT. That particular worm is a 4-tooth “farm gear”. There was also a 6-tooth worm called the “express gear”, that provided a higher top speed.

Seems like people have nailed the last item as a kite, but my first thought considering how heavy it looks would be a "sea anchor". Thrown overboard and secured by a line to the front of a raft it would keep the prow of the raft facing upwind and help it ride the waves and not get pitched around or blown over sideways.
@edgarlatulip48207 ай бұрын
that kite is an old kite antenna for an emergency distress tranciever used by naval and air services. check the string........you may find a copper wire......That's the antenna.

The arrow point looks to be iron rather than bronze, so is more likely to be Roman, even more likely if it was found in Yorkshire near to where it was bought.
