I'm thinking of selling the stem and handlebars to fund this build. Is that wrong?

Does anyone recognize this vintage Lugged mtb? My current theory is that it's a shogun, Ross, Schwinn or possibly (but unlikely) an old specialized.

With the nice lugs, fun shifters, and wide cantis, whatever brand it is, it's a winner of a project. A little elbow grease, a lot of bearing grease, and some metal polish and you'll have a grand thing to ride!

That's exactly what I was thinking. Definitely going to do a full disassemble and rebuild. Stay tuned!

Looks exactly like a Schwinn High Sierra, I've seen a few of them here in Seattle, one came in the shop today in fact!

Prolly something Japanese. I'm leaning toward Nishiki because of the lug work.

I've never seen a Nishiki lugged mountain bike but I googled it and looks like they made a few very nice ones!

If i had to guess it's probably a 1984 Miyata Terrarunner. The lack of a unicrown fork & slingshot stem makes me think either that or an older schwinn high sierra. Cool bike tho! :-)

Good call. I looked at pics and those are both pretty close. The high sierras have a similar fork. Thanks!

@@nickdowdell2441 I'll have to Google that. My latest theory is a Shogun MTB-1. velospace.org/node/48646

The seatpost collar integrated seatstays are interesting... not many framebuilders used that. I know Ritchey was known for it but everything else about the bike doesn't scream Ritchey.

That's a good feature to look out for. I've been googling bikes that have this particular stem and came across this Ross? thecabe.com/forum/attachments/resized_20220408_173311_4317513453351-jpeg.1620336/
