I remember how the Society would quote from the report in the Miami “Herald” in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Andrew: ‘Residents of south Florida aren’t closing their doors on Jehovah’s witnesses this week-even if they still have doors to close.’ The article goes on to discuss the relief operations being conducted by the witnesses at that time. (Indeed, the article is partially quoted in the “Proclaimers” book; clearly, a last-minute addition inasmuch as that book was issued at the 1993 district assembly.) I personally know several in my congregation in central Ohio who went down there and were based out of the Fort Lauderdale Assembly Hall; and, of course, they took photographs of the damage and destruction in the neighborhoods of south Dade to which they had been assigned by the relief committee. Yet, even then, I was aware that what Jehovah’s witnesses were credited by the “Herald” with doing in south Florida was not unique amongst religious outfits-or, any other group, for that matter. Why would the Miami “Herald” run an article specifically focusing on the witnesses? That stuck out to me-at twelve years old at the time-like a sore thumb. It was only years later that I learned the reason for that. The Society actually writes such articles itself pays the corporate press to run them. In other words, these are, not articles, but press releases prepared by the Society and written in such language as to appear as articles. Even more recently, we’ve noted that the Society does the same thing with regard to its summer assemblies. Otherwise-local news reports on the Society’s assemblies all follow a script-or, at least an outline. The “Herald” report from 1992 would, consequently, have to be an instance of this practice by the Society. It follows the pattern of what we’ve seen since then. I mention this because it makes it plain to me that ‘the people of south Dade weren’t closing their doors on Jehovah’s witnesses-even if they still had doors to close’-because the witnesses weren’t seeking to render aid to them in the first place. They were ministering unto the needs of their own brethren; and that only for the sake of keeping up appearances.

I remember our international convention in Seattle. Sorry…this triggered me. I had a family of 6 I had to find lodging for, and we all got squeezed into one room. That convention was a comedy of errors….that led to me waking up. I didn’t care that my husband was part of ‘Stephen Lett’s’ medical team. Myself and my four small children were subjected to driving rain, which we sought shelter for…and then were chastised for not just sitting there and taking it. NOT TO MENTION…the delegates wouldn’t talk to us, because we didn’t have enough money to make them little gifts to take home. Eye opening for sure. Everyone in my congregation had all these pretty souvenirs, and I had a really bad taste in my mouth.

The Seattle international was a shit show. Definitely impacted me even though I didn't wake up for several years. Did it rain that weekend? Thr hurricane thing.. oh my god. I live in Northeast Tennessee where it hit pretty hard. Three publishers were killed? Between my house and the main road we had quite a few lost. My husband and I were lucky. The dam that broke is literally 10-15 mins from us. I don't know why or how that water missed us ESPECIALLY since our house so close and we're in a small dip in the land. We could have been washed away too. But. Three publishers.. i can walk a mile down the road and ask people how many people were lost. A few days after I went to the store while my husband was working. There were so, so many wreaths on people's doors for those that they lost. Not myself because im disabled.. our people were out there on four wheelers and chainsaws cutting all of the trees out of the road. I know several people who literally jumped into that water and swam to get someone out. One of my people from high school.. shes the youngest of 3 and has two brothers. Well one of the brothers and his wife AND their dad were found the next day and theyre all okay. The brothers wife was found clinging ro a broken tree for dear life. The dad was found hiking to try and find SOMEONE, ANYONE to help. The middle brother found them. He swam against the current of the water and got them ro safety as well as their dogs. You don't expect that kind of weather in this area so it took us all by surprise. Im so, so thankful it missed me, my husband, and our four dogs. We didn't have power so we were all going to go sleep in the back of my SUV and then it came back on. I fell to my knees in my kitchen crying. Then once the WiFi came back (no cell service at my house) i started freaking out seeing everything. I couldn't believe it. I love cooking and theres never been a single soul who didn't like my food. I fought through the chronic pain from my health issues and made warm meals for people who lost everything. I hand delivered them too (as long as I could get there). People around here always take care of their own.. and although it wasnt much.. i enjoyed helping how I could. Theres nothing better than a warm and comforting dinner after everything. Lordy i know this is about JWs but the "three publishers" thing just sent my blood pressure sky high. That dude doesn't even know what we went through.

Publishers are just renters. Watchtower is like McDonald's in that they are the landlord and lease or rent the property out.
@thomash.schwed36626 күн бұрын
Of the two methods you mentioned, it’s actually renting. This is the result of the policy change announced by the Society as “loan forgiveness”. The “Society Kingdom Hall Fund”, which had been started to bankroll the construction of Kingdom Halls for congregations which couldn’t afford to build, was converted into a pool into which all congregations would contribute to pay the Society for the use of their own Halls. This means that congregations which had long since paid off their mortgages and outright owned their Kingdom Halls now had those Halls taken out from under them by and the titles transferred to the Society. Those congregations are now paying rent to the Society for Kingdom Halls they themselves had owned in some cases for decades. In turn, the Society insists that those congregations continue doing the actual physical work of maintaining those Halls until such time as the Society decides to sell such and build new ones an hour or more away due to the related policy of “consolidation and contraction”. And some of us remember the last number of years of “reconstruction and expansion” not so very long ago! How the mighty have fallen!

First and foremost we were told that in the last days there would be a great influx of people. Çan you imagine if Jehovah had destroyed the Egyptians first? Especially before the Israelites had left who of the Egyptians would have been available to leave with them? So, who do you think Jehovah is going to turn his attention to first? The last time I checked a parent will discipline their child first when they are caught doing something wrong with another child. So that leaves me with conviction - Jehovah disciplines those he loves, or corrects.. My second thought is about the halls - they now hold ownership of all of them. So my question would be - when a hall is sent money to remodel the building, why is it we have then received the money in loan form only to have to pay it back? Wouldn't that money be called an investment towards your asset? Especially if the building was paid for? So now all those halls affected by the recent storms, will there be insurance money for the repairs or loans while the insurance money goes north?

26:05 which heavily reminds me of how Mormons are convinced their faith is true, I’ve never been part of that church or a JW but when I talked with LDS missionaries recently out of curiosity they challenged me to read the Book of Mormon and pray to know if it’s true or not, so a bit like how this guy became devoted but with a different text. Also based on my experience in how I ended up in another possible cult (it was a mainstream fundamentalist church) age 13 was around the time when I started becoming more and more devout in the faith I was raised in (possibly the greatest mistake I have ever done) so I imagine that teenagers are particularly vulnerable to joining such groups since they’re still trying to figure out who they are and their place in the world. I think this is called appeal to emotion fallacy and like Pascal’s wager it falls apart when you use it to try to prove your religion is true but turns out other religions and denominations are using that method too, in that case on what basis do you figure out which one is true?

I find it interesting that the two pioneer sisters who studied with Lurch were anointed, it's no surprise then that at some point in the future he claims to be anointed, these seems to happen frequently. Humphrey Egghead talked about his grandmother as a faithful Witness. I do wonder if she claimed to be anointed. It is almost a pass it on down the line kind of thing. I'm sure they will drop the 1935 thing soon.

Ever notice that the buildings shown in pictures of the new world (order, system....whatever) wouldn't be structurally sound and up to code? BTW, Wally, you nailed it as far as discrpencies between policy and new understanding. No oars in the water......

The beneficiary is Watchtower, the real estate company. After lining pocket with some of the profits, the rest is reinvested into acquiring newer, upscale, luxury properties. Along with these high value properties (private) they also scoop up low value, undeveloped properties. These will be sold to congregations who develop the property at their own expense. After some time, the property and the building will be sold at huge profit, again for Watchtower, and the cycle goes on and on. Pyramid scheme, literally; Watchtower was founded on pyramidology.

0.72352 % conversion rate. If I was an investor, I would like to buy stocks from a company who pays dividends at around 1.5 % - 2.0 % and a growth rate of at least 2% year over year. The Watchtower wouldn't even show on my scanner....
