What is Topgolf and how do you play?

If you can hit over 280 yards you're screwed if you just want to hit for power and not play for holes. The fence doesn't go further than that.

You rent a bay, kinda like getting a lane at a bowling alley. The bays are numbered 1xx, 2xx, 3xx to tell you which floor you are on. Each bay has a table to sit at, and a red line that you stay behind until you’re the one going up to the golf mat. The mat is astroturf with a rubber tee, and has a machine with a picture of the distance of each hole. It also has a red laser light that you swipe your club past, and it dispenses a ball straight to you. You pay based on the number of hours you want to play. Prices change slightly based on the time of day, as well as if you order any food or drinks. There are bay attendants, basically waiters, who bring you whatever you order. And it all gets out onto your tab, the golf time, the food and drinks, and you pay how you would at a restaurant.

Nah. I had never played golf in my life (aside from mini-golf). I was at a work conference with golfer friends last year, and one of them had a season pass (or whatever it was called), so we played for free. Anyway, only 2 of the 5 of our group had ever played before. Even though have never wanted to play regular gold (and will probably never), I had a lot of fun and even won one of the games. I am sitting in my hotel room in Myrtle Beach at the same work conference again right now, and we have played twice again this week. Seriously, I am just hitting the ball and don't have any real skill. It's just a really cool atmosphere/place, and it's fun to hang out. There's a Top Golf near where I live in Greenville, SC, and I may start occasionally going there now. We'll definitely always go back to the Myrtle Beach location every year at conferences. As long as you have a friend or two who can at least teach you the basics, then you will be fine. I remember being a little pissed last year when I couldn't get the hang of it in the first hour, but once I got started making contact it was great .
