Something I obviously should have mentioned, but did not, is that with modern electronic throttle bodies, it's very easy control RPM (especially for the lower RPM rev-limit for launching) simply by limiting throttle, and then opening the throttle fully once the brake pedal is released or the clutch is engaged.
@Chromov113
@Chromov113 8 жыл бұрын
Hey, maybe you make a video on electronic throttle bodies? How are they made, are there different types, and is there an issue that throttle valve moves slower than the driver engages the gas pedal.

In a more generic sense, the ECU reduces the air charge entering the engine. Depending on the system, that can mean closing the throttle, reducing intake valve lift, reducing boost pressure, etc.This is by far the most common way that modern ECUs control engine overspeed. Additionally, leaning the mixture is not usually used to reduce torque, as very quickly you will reach a point where the mixture won't burn (lean misfire). That happens long before you are to the point of reducing net torque to 0 and is also very bad for emissions.

Off topic but I have a question. What equation could I use to compare two veicles, and see which one would beat the other. For example a 350hp civic vs. a 440hp challenger

Live rear end.. there is tiny amount of side to side play from the axles to the diff. when some amateur smashes on their new GT, that tiny play actually amounts to a significant translation sometimes allowing the rear end to 'walk' or 'hop' side-side. which results in a crowd torpedo. lol There IS actually a reason for it lol.

You should also mention that a rev limiter only works when you're accelerating and the reva are increasing. The revs will climb to the point of that limiter rev range and then the limiter kicks in to prevent any damage. If you're driving a manual and mis-shift, let's say you wanted 4th but hit 2nd, the rev limiter will not prevent engine damage due to the mechanical force and gearing up to the engine, which will mechanically cause the engine to rev higher than the set limiter value.

Was just about to add a comment about the throttle to control RPM but you caught it before me. Actually what is used to control RPM depends on the time frame it needs to happen. Cutting fuel is the sledge hammer approach, very aggressive and very fast. Retarding spark is also fast (can apply at next firing) and smooth but has limited range of authority before miss fire and emissions issues. Throttle is slower and smooth without any emissions / miss fire issues. However, as you pointed out the downside of using the throttle is reduced gases to spool up the turbo. A combination of all three is good.

84YM JDM Civic Si had 2-stage rev limiter preventing the engine revving over 4000 rpm when cold. Mazda Familia GTX (JDM version) enforced the Japanese 180 km/h speed limit with a fuel cut-out. Not good when the wastegate has a T-piece tube to produce overboost and you hit the speed limiter while boosting hard in 4th... pieces of piston ring everywhere... :-(

For drag racing you wanna be at redline when you launch, but you run studder box and trans brake to do this a studder box makes the car miss every other cylinder so you can floor it till you go on whichever yellow light you leave on or count if your running on a pro tree and leave with max power so you shoot off like a rocket, there's no such thing as a no lag turbo I don't care what anyone says NHRA did a study on turbos and found it takes 2-3 seconds to actually make boost, and I've always got more power from advancing my timing not retarding it

Most of the newer cars with drive by wire throttles just back off the throttle for you to limit rpm. It doesn't sound as cool but is a little easier on the engine because you don't get what is basically a controlled missfire.

how is leaning an engine down at high rpm and high load safe. thats a bomb. period ad period. id have to see an afr gauge to believe that. lean mix burns way hotter, detonates much easier - there must be some ignition cutoff or that just would not work. its safest to cut ignition.

Launch control has been around for decades. My 68 Chrysler had launch control. We called it stall speed, when you engine cannot produce anymore power to spin the torque converted faster -- normally these were around 2200 to 2600 rpm. Nothing beat left foot braking your dad's car on main street, stomp on the gas, and spin those 120/70 R15's all the way across the intersection.

I've read an article about the rev limiter, and it claimed that cutting fuel could increase the temperature of the engine, because the fuel takes out some heat out of the engine. And the engine could overheat. If so why modern cars use this method to limit rpm? Anyone knows?
