Stage 1: bolt ons. Intake, exhaust, wheels, springs, exterior accoutrement. Stage 2: headers, turbo (if equipped) back exhaust, seats, steering wheel, suspension (street), small aero improvements, brakes. Stage 3: turbo (or s/c, all required now except big block) full ecm/tcm, upgraded suspension and brakes required, cage (probably) specific function in mind, aero is undoubtedly a problem now, chassis imptovements (tube frame?) Stage 4: fully everything in that category as far as bolt on or off the shelf parts, ready to attack the track (in whatever form) from what you could find on summitt or Jegs, custom aero, no interior, frame mods, etc... Stage 5: purpose built. Say no more. You have a goal and a plan to meet it. All manufacturers and all records are calculated. You know when you're here.

Except this is so variable. My car has a stage 1 tune, and that’s just a raw computer tune to the transmission and the ECU. It goes from 290hp/290ft-lb torque to 365hp/380ft-lb torque. Bolt ons don’t happen until stage 2. The stages not only depend on the tuning company, but also the car itself. Some cars can’t handle the added power and need upgrades. Some can, and can be tuned significantly before needing to upgrade hardware.

The "Stage" nomelclature actually existed before Grand Tourismo, though I'll agree that the game did expand it's usage to the wider audience. The one example I'm super familiar with is the Buick GS/GSX series starting in 1968 through '75 used "Stages" as an upgrade package options. Stage 1 got you the Wildcat 455 cubic inch engine over the Buick 350, dual exhaust over single, and a larger 4 barrel carb, arriving at the 360hp, 510ft/lb torque monster. Stage 2 was a very rare package option that was sold as a dealer option, or to wrench happy individuals and were shipped out in the trunk of the car, and less than 5 Stage 2 GSX packages were actually installed by the factory. High flow heads, high flow intake manifold, custom exhaust porting, a more aggressive camshaft, hollow pushrods for improved lubrication, forged piston heads, a tuned up 4 barrel carb are what's known, but there could have been other race-inclined options included. Their factory example had a much higher rear differential ratio than the usual GS (at 4.78) to help transfer all that torque to the tires, but I don't know if that was a thing that came with the Stage 2 package or not.

The only thing I use stages for is cams, because the kinda guys I talk to don't understand lift/duration and stuff. Other than that I might say "they call it a stage 2 trans" but then proceed to lay out that it comes with better clutch packs that are rated up to 600 ft-lbs input, a custom redone valve body, and a brazed 2200 stall lockup torque converter good for about 500 horsepower. And if I'm talking about something like I'm running twin 57mm precisions feeding a gen3 whipple, etc, etc, and they don't get it then I might dumb it down and say something like "think of it as a solid overall stage 6 setup that makes 1xxx horsepower (for the record I'm running a full bolt on motor right now making maybe 300, not dumb enough to run a thousand horse motor on a 500 horse cobverter.

Definitely. "stages" are something you would find in a video game or something. Has no relation to real life tuning.
@Dim4ik20123 жыл бұрын
In Europe everything is way easier. SO here is a short guide to stage tuning. Stage 1 - ECU remap only, everything else is stock Stage 2 - ECU remap + hardware mods. The most common is to cat-delete, remove any eco restrictions and add mods like intake, exhaust, cooling, etc which make more power than stage 1 but the engine is still stock and stock turbo. Stage 3 - upgraded turbo + cooling + exhaust + ECU + MANY more mods possible BUT most of the engine internals (pistons and crankshaft) still remain stock. This is how you can extract maximum power from the engine and still have stock components. Stage 4 - Full engine rebuild and basically limitless upgrades on top of that. So here you have it - 1,2,3,4. Simple and easy
@singleservingjack45473 жыл бұрын
In the UK the general understanding is; *Stage 1* - ECU software *only* *Stage 2* - ECU + Bolt ons/Induction kit *Stage 3* - All of the above +Turbo Upgrade/ Supercharger. *Stage 4* All of the above + Fully built / forged engine

I've thought about all the various car channels on KZbin (and elsewhere), and Donut is mostly "how did this car, model, company, way of things in driving and the automobile industry, etc, come to be?" They've sort of diversified from that more recently, but much of their main originals - Bumper2Bumper, Up To Speed, and Wheelhouse - are of this vein. Other popular car channels: MightyCarMods: "What nonsense can we do with this car?" RegularCars: "What does this car mean, in it's time and now, and who is it for?" Top Gear/Grand tour: "How can these cars make 3 old British guys behave like middle schoolers?" Engineering Explained: "How does this car work?"

I dare say, most race cars don't use these things. A lot of GT4 class race cars, like the GT4 Mustang, GT4 Camaro, etc., actually don't have a single engine mod... Basically just better brakes, wheels, and slick tyres. Maaaaaaaybe racing coilovers. B-Spec touring cars, for example, use almost entirely unmodified Ford Fiesta (non-ST trim) or MINI Cooper non-D type cars with ~110 WHP in racing spec Spec Miata, basically all unmodified engines... A majority of modern race cars, you don't really have to turn wrenches on them. Remove interior, weld in a cage, bolt in safety equipment and you're done.

My 2002 Subaru WRX wagon was Stage 2+ using a cobb SF intake/FULL TBE & was Pro-tuned on 93 gas at a performance shop in my area. Going any higher would cause damage to the stock motor/transmission.

Track racing: proper alignment, play with tire pressure, no oil leaks, rev limiter. All you can do with a production car. Then you step up to a mid engine car... Lotus Elise or build a AC Cobra. Low COG, alignment, tirepressure, rev limiter and then build an engine. Max hp is less important than durability.

Finally!! I've been so confused about this for so long. My mind is enlightened. Next need to find a vid to explain how you remove all the panels without visible screws in a car T_T And then how to tell what is what on an engine. And then what fluids needs to come out for any given job T_T

Grand tourismo give the concept "stage", but without standardization But there's a tuning shop that specializes in modifying audi came up with proper standardization for the "stages" to support their tunes and remap , from stage 1 to stage 3+ Then many tuner follow the steps and came up with their stages, but those stages more or less gave the same ways of modifying from basic remaps to upgrading hardware to support the massive power bump

In the Subaru community we have a pretty widely accepted "stage" system, its mainly just a quick way to sum up what kind of mods we have. But it's unique to each Make, like a stage 2 Subaru WRX isn't necessarily the same as a stage 2 VW GTI.

When working with companies selling parts for Volvos is seems they usually fallow the IPD rule of thumb of Stage 1 = no internal mods or programming needed Stage 2= programming needed Stage 3 = programming and engine internal upgrades needed. Stage 4 is usually an entire bolt in engine, ecu and add ons.

I usually see stage numbers used most on clutches, which makes a lot sense. You can easily get an idea of how aggressive the clutch it based on its stage number.

Do a Past Gas on the Mille Miglia! The thousand mile race on public roads where you can culminate in the legendary 1955 win by Stirling Moss (who just passed this year) who after the 10 hour race, drove through the night with his girlfriend to have breakfast in Munich, then lunch in Stuttgart and dinner in Cologne. Stirling’s teammates were no laughing matter either, Fangio and Kling rode without Navigator/Mechanics and the last teammate, Herrmann the year before saw the railroad gate lower for the express train to Rome, knocked on his passengers helmet to tell him to duck, because the Porshe was so low, went under the gate and ahead of the train in the middle of the race! Stirling also pioneered the little used pace notes at the time with his journalist ride along giving him hand gestures from his scrolling notes machine. Previously, 90% of the winners were Italian and had circuit knowledge and didn’t have notes. You can also talk about how Alfa’s used to win all the time but under Enzo, Ferrari’s started to dominate.

I'm building a 2005 Mazda 6 S wagon with 132000 miles. Manual transmission. Got it torn apart now to fix it back to zero. All OEM to get the leaks and squeaks fixed. The body is immaculate aside from a couple small scratches and overall paint decay. I have an engine core to rebuild after I get the thing running. From a 2012 Ford escape 3.0. I'm a Ford and Mazda certified technician. The endgame is street build luxury centrifugal supercharged. Air ride. A/C. Pushing 400hp give or take and running pump gas. I believe I can fly. I reckon I'm gonna try.

Wait I didn't understand something. That chiptuning is also possible on atmospheric engines right? Even if the powergains are less important, we all want more powah. So what exactly is modified in a chiptuning in an atmospheric engine? The throttle body opens even wider? If not, how can the engine inject more fuel to create that tiny extra horsepower? Please petrolfriends, help me understand this

My opion on stages for standard turbo car: Stage 1: Software only Stage 2: Software, exhaust mod and intake mod. DeCat or Catback, EGR delete Stage 3: Bigger turbo (internals depend on the strength of your engine)
@Itacs893 жыл бұрын
As far as fiesta guy go, stage 1 is on stock downpipe, stage 2 is when you change the downpipe, stage 3 when you change the turbo, stage 4 when you open the engine changing things like the cams. There si also the stage 5, which is a complete engine rebuild, big whole turbo and shit, 500hp. IC, exhaust, intake, clutch, ecc.. i just a +

We need a standard based on what the customer commits to. I propose this: Stage 1: Easily undone to stay under engine-warranty. Example: Just an ECU flash to optimise fuel to air and timing. Stage 2: Increased flow. Warranty is void but your service interval remains the same. Example: Downpipe and possibly an intake. Stage 3: Replace active components. Reliability is unknown and the service interval should be cut in half. Example: Hybrid turbo and a bigger intercooler.

For Harley Davidsons at least the MoCo has standardized this, so even if you’re smart and buy aftermarket everyone is on the same page about what kids of mods you have, even if the specifics are up to you. Stage 1: Intake air cleaner, slip-on exhaust, tuner (anywhere from a piggyback to a full ECU replacement) Stage 2: cam upgrade and matching tune, may include new lifters and pushrods Stage 3: Big bore cylinders & pistons Stage 4: headwork, throttle body Stage 5: Trask Turbo - though you can do this any time as it includes a specific cam and ECU Note that Harley doesn’t officially support “Stage 5” or any forced induction, while the others you can get with a factory warranty if done by HD with HD parts (which are inferior and expensive)
