Your interview with some of these Brothers depresses me. As a Black Brit, born almost 70 years ago in a UK that was much more racially charged and intolerant than it is now....our generation were much more aware of our culture, and our connection with Black Americans and others in the African diaspora than these youngsters are. My Jamaican parents instilled in me a strong sense of my Jamaican background and history, buying books about Jamaica, Marcus Garvey and other Blacks around the world. Ebony Magazine was in our home every month, we knew that even if we didn't see Blacks doing certain things on our doorstep we knew that Black people were doing significant things around the world. We took pride in their success, and it gave us something to strive for. I left UK 40 years ago, America is home now. In this age of Social Media, AI and ready access to information, it is a very sad state of affairs that some of these young men are so culturally lost. The UK black culture is largely a blend of what our parents brought with them, and the mix of what Blacks from other cultures brought with them. I am not surprised that so many young Black men, are stabbing each other to death....it is heartbreaking, but when a person does not realise their own value.....it is easier to over look it in others. And why are they killing themselves? .....well for the most part, it is over a bunch of senseless and frivolous foolishness. Who cares, whether your Sneakers are Adidas or Nike? Who cares who you hang out with or what music you listen to.....

The term "Black" in the UK is just a media term stemming from the updated policing IC codes. Anyone who could be described as "Of African appearance" used to be classed as "Afro-Caribbean" and this was later updated to "Black" once the population of brown-skinned Africans increased. The code for this is still IC3 so they are all lumped together. From a policing perspective this makes sense as they need something quick and easy when describing a scene/situation but from an identity perspective is too simplistic. The UK is not the same as the US in this respect - there is no singular "Black" culture.

Bro, I love your videos, but I think you've got black culture a bit mixed up. 😂 I know the debates are engaging and entertaining, but there's a lot of ignorance being spread. For example, in Africa, there's no such thing as "black culture." We don't wake up every day acknowledging that we're black because everyone around us is black. It's not like in America, where Black people have had to deal with oppression based on the colour of their skin. That's not the case in Africa, and it's not the case in England either. You're interviewing first- or second-generation migrants from different countries and tribes that make up those countries. Of course, their cultures are going to be different. African kids in the UK are raised with the values and cultures of the different tribes their parents originated from. That's why they keep telling you there's no single "black culture" in the UK like there is in America. You need to understand that the circumstances that shape the recognition of blackness in the US aren't the same everywhere else in the world. I would love to debate you. That'll be fun 😅

Black people in the UK usually go by their/ancestors country of origin first e.g Nigerian British, Congolese British, Jamaican British It's the reason there's no shared 'Black' culture. Furthermore Black American culture isn't homogeneous and can be regional or even localized. That's not to say Black American culture doesn't exist, just that it's varied. In the same way Black British culture is varied and localized not by regional differences within the UK but differences they brought from their home countries.
@Kingme31443 ай бұрын
I see what you tried to do but it's still not comparable at all and that's the difference. You said black brits basically bring culture from their ancestors that's a stretch. Most of them are recent immigrants. They bring culture from their homeland of their mother, or grandmother etc. They moved to an already established country and assimilated. They aren't birthing anything culturally. They are either doing what white brits or doing or stealing from home. Black Americans were in the usa from the beginning of the country and stripped of African identity by 1 generations or 2 generations. Then they begin birthing culture that the world hasn't seen before. Hip hop, jazz, soul, funk, house, disco, blues, 100s of inventions, social movements from the Civil rights to the black panther party, aave, even one of the father of videos games were all black american. Even the bad stuff about the culture is easliy identifiable. Culture birthed on American soil by this same group in less than 400 years. You could easily trace culture back to black Americans so I can easily answer the question about what is black American culture. The differences withing the UK regions is different parts of the world's culture. The differences in black Americans states is still black american culture. They didn't immigrate recently its all from the original group that came over 400 years ago.

@bronze28113 ай бұрын
@@zimmermanshelleyWe claim it but we acknowledge our ETHNICITY or parents/grandparents nationality or ethnicity first - these cultures are still influential in our lives and we even visit back home and have family in the Caribbean and Africa. British people and I am talking indigenous yt brits DO NOT and will never accept us as being just “British.” Despite it being progressive here, we are constantly reminded by them, that we are not really “from here” and are still seen as foreigners to an extent by a large majority of yts regardless of if we were born here or not (although they don’t like to admit this publicly). On the census and official forms there are now black British categories then it narrows it down to caribbean, African, etc. but it is always enforced that we are our ethnic/ancestral heritage first before being British! Racism is real despite it being discreet here. You have to remember that the Black British community has only been here in significant numbers post world war 2- so the 1940s onwards. Prior to that there were hardly any black people here. We are still connected to our African and Caribbean cultures so ofc we will still claim that before anything. When they have their festival, people from Ghana and Nigeria will somtimes attend ,eventually the British attacked the Spanish in Jamaica and took over the country,after this, the British brought slaves from plantations in Barbados to Jamaica, these were the first English speaking slaves in Jamaica, the British then brought more slaves over from Africa, the original people of Jamaica were Taino and Arawak Indians.Some historians say Nanny was actually born in Ghana

Man I salute you for just doing simple research so many people in the Uk are clueless about what Caribbean carnival really is , it takes just 10 minutes to read a bit. Claudia Jones who was a Trinidadian migrant to uk alongside others decided to bring a Trinidadian style carnival to the uk . As you rightly said nottinghill carnival stemmed from the back of racial tensions( Antiguan migrant Kelso Cochrane who Claudia jones was close to was murdered) . Claudia started with the ball rooms carnival and then decided to bring the street Carnival that happened in Trinidad to the UK to celebrate Caribbean history and culture . In NEW YORK you have BROOKLYN Labor Day carnival , Toronto , Germany , Miami , Japan , Los Angeles , Atlanta etc etc all have their Caribbean carnivals which which all have similar beginnings as a result of them all being an export of Trinidad and Tobago carnival. Trinidad /caribbean carnival came out of the eslavement days and has French influence . Brazil carnival is very different but has similarities as they all have European influence . just for those who dont know. I also feel that Caribbean carnival is misrepresented because Calypso / soca is the actual music for carnival and not rap and music with guns in it . I love rap and drill but it doesn't belong in carnival as it has no meaning for it in it . there are some individuals (stabbings)that make it worse for others and bring a stigma to the carnival whilst the history of it isnt taught enough .

The elements are a fusion of continental African and Caribbean culture. It has influences from native British and USA Black American Freedmen culture as well. Right the culture is still in its infancy but as you said it's mainly rooted in a blend of afro Caribbean, FBA and African cultures. Also bare in mind there are only around 2million blacks in the uk with a big number of that not even being born native to this country so the actual number of genuine uk blacks who were born and raised here is even less. FBA culture is so rich and influential for many reasons, but two notable ones are that your culture was born and been evolving for over 400 years and then secondly you have at least 40million contributors to the culture spread out in so many different regions all over the USA too

So true. We now have 4th generation windrush black kids have assimilated. Yes some black kids like afrobeats and dancehall but that is not culture. Back in the days you had strong black communities - churches, visits back home to see relatives to keep kids grounded, multi generational family get togethers. A lot of black communities are gentrified now or broken war zones that the kids leave as soon as an opportunity arises. So many people withdrew from black events because they became too dangerous. E.g. some kid was stabbed at a Carribbean family day recently in broad daylight. Black kids of this generation will more than likely marry and procreate with English natives. Notting hill carnival is just a party now - not that deep. And, a lot of black people after a certain age stay away because it's boring just like the first guy alluded to.

I think there is lot to learn from both sides, What he should do is look historically. Just like the American black was brainwashed into believing they are American. The carribean were brainwashed into believing they were British. Then “independence”, these fake independence’s allowed us to show a little more of our culture openly. The culture seen in America is a mixture the remnants of what ever they didn’t destroy of their culture from the homeland and the white culture. Out of that you birthed your own culture. Similar to what has happened dont he Caribbean & here. When America becomes the dominant world force, American culture spreads. Then black folk got access to to tv and radio both in the uk the carribean and the US. With the US pioneering the tv. Because slavery ended much later for the US the mindset of the white took longer to adapt therefore the civil rights movement was prime to be shared across the world tv. Meanwhile in South Africa the SAME ish is happening but nobody cares. TV has dictated what became dominant culture. Black American culture resonate with the carribeans and the UK folk because we could see US represented and we didn’t have the same access. black Americans couldn’t see US and didn’t have the same access. Therefore the most they were impacted by were the carribean immigrants and reggae. (Which only was seen because it made white people money, which is the same reason us blacks were allowed visibility, white people made money) Now the internet is breaking that barrier down. And we are realising we are FAR FAR more alike. The Carribean, the Brazilians, the Nigerians, the Ghanaians, the Congolese, the Angolans. And there is a real good reason for that and it’s because we are actually family by DNA. By nation. True Judah and Israel.

Black uk culture is quite literally a melting pot of Cultures from africa and the Caribbean due to the windrush generation bringing in both africans and carribeans. The thing about black uk culture its not that we dont know what it is its that because we are still attached to our african/carribean roots and acknowledge it more than african/black americans do, our culture was inherited from our parents and the generations before hand and passed down till this day hence why theres so many culturally oriented food spots music and influence in general over the black uk culture(the melting pot of different cultures both african and carribean). We quite simply tend to cling to our Original roots more than african/black americans do. Hence the difference in culture. Black american/african american culture isnt as attached to the original roots of where they came from(africa) but more like a seed(america) from the same tree(africa) and grew different to the original. Therefore a different development in the culture/experiences due to the environment. if that makes sense. Hope this was helpful

Caribbean life is great, people just come abroad for the money. A lot of us are actively investing in our homes. Many go back every year, multiple times a year. especially since many islands offer the grandfather clause for citizenship and investment. But because the US and Europe cheated many of these countries and Africa, the fastest way to fix it is go to America of wherever, make money, and use it to build up your grandfather's legacy.
@Darrytheprince3 ай бұрын
What's wrong with repping your roots? Its a way to create unity amongst Caribbean Americans when there's already so much division in every part of this country. So it's nice to see. Plus, all the Caribbean flags together is so pretty and colorful. If you got a problem with black people coming together...well idk what to tell you.

@Darrytheprince I have no problems with black Caribbeans coming together, but when do you peeps give props to America for letting your peeps in? As a Black American growing up around Island peeps, they called us Yankees as a derogatory term. So I called them Coconuts, crazy how most of your peeps feel superior to my folk's, when we fought for our rights against the oppressors of America for 100's of year's. Where was the Islanders or African tethers?

The difference between the UK and American blacks is a lot of us are 2nd generation Caribbean/African and have been raised in those cultures. It is a melting pot of different cultures which is what makes us unique and is also why we aren’t as rachet as Americans because certain things aren’t allowed in our cultures.
@zimmermanshelley3 ай бұрын
But you guys are born and raised in the UK 🇬🇧. So are you saying that the UK lifestyle and culture, that was and still already there. Haven’t infiltrated your homes and families? You guys don’t follow the “tea rules”? Having tea at a certain time of day? All the other traditions and activities that all the UK civilians adhere to?
@Rico-s4y3 ай бұрын
@@zimmermanshelley if I’m being honest, even white fully English people don’t do that. You guys have a view of Britain that died in the early 20th Century. Ontop of that, our parents came here and taught us their culture so it is closer to us. The same way in the US a lot of Hispanics/Haitians that were born in America feel closer to their roots than the American culture

@@Rico-s4y so you guys don’t adhere to any of the UK lifestyle? Only the lifestyle that your parents lived in their country? Hispanics that are born and raised in the United States do follow and go with the culture style in America. Yes they do adhere to their culture from their country, to some extent. Majority don’t always, completely follow their parent’s culture from their country. They follow certain practices and traditions. Other than that, it is the same as all the other Americans. I don’t know too much about Haitians and their families. I’m sure it is the same with them. They follow their parent’s country customs to an extent. People are essentially fighting over groups of people being snatched & shipped, some taken to the US, others to the Caribbean & South America...the horrors endured are the same. Lets celebrate the strength & endurance of generations that came before us that allowed us to carve out some culture and history whether its US/UK/Caribbean. Apple IPhones originate from the US but I’m not going to feel like an American for using a device that’s universal am I? The Tv was invented in Britain but I’m sure you don’t feel British for simply using a Tv
@dbztrk3 ай бұрын
@@The_white_adonis No, we don't copy the English language. Our country was founded by the British/English which is why we speak English. You can't copy something you descend from. Additionally, American English has evolved to have different spellings for words and different syntax.
@dbztrk3 ай бұрын
@@genox-h8g Actually you do. When you engage in behaviors/customs that are foreign to you, that's literally copying. It doesn't matter if it's hand gestures, food, dress, song etc. As it didn't natively develop in that place. There's no shame in that. All cultures take from other cultures. There is no such thing as a pure culture.
@genox-h8g3 ай бұрын
@@dbztrk You’re right in saying all cultures take from eachother and there’s no such thing as a pure culture but saying we “copy” or are “cosplaying” is just wrong. We are not engaging in behaviours or customs foreign to us, things like McDonald’s for example Adonis uses a lot is as common in the Uk as it is in the US and it’s been around almost the same time. Just because these things originate from America doesn’t make it “foreign” to us it’s apart of our daily life as much as it is yours to the point I’d say it’s also apart of our culture. Americans undoubtedly would consider Pizza and Burgers apart of their culture and day to day life, neither Pizza or Burgers originated from the US that doesn’t mean you guys are cosplaying Italians or Germans for eating food as common to you as it is them.
@dbztrk3 ай бұрын
@@genox-h8g We definitely consider Pizza and Burgers to be apart of our culture. However, we have American versions of Pizza such as the New York slice, Detroit style, Chicago Deep Dish etc. due to Italian immigrants and the cheese Burger due to German immigrants. You possess American cultural elements due to the corporate consumption complex, not because of American immigration. That's the difference. Keep in mind that you guys have a large South Asian community, the very reason why you have Chicken Tikka Masala (created by a Pakistani). However, you guys don't speak with a South Asian affectation, use South Asian lingo or style yourselves in South Asian fashions. You dress the way you do because you have been influenced by American media. It's no different than the American kids that speak with a Japanese affectation, uses Japanese lingo or styles themselves in Japanese fashion because they have consumed Anime and has been clearly affected by it. While I wouldn't say they are necessarily cosplaying, they are definitely behaving in a way that is culturally not their own and people can tell. We as Americans can clearly see the the American influence in the way that Black Brits speak, dress and behave and it's due to the consumption of American media and not because of American immigration. This is why it comes across to us as performative and not authentic. We don't see Black Brit culture as necessarily distinct because y'all have borrowed heavily from America. See Drill music for example. There is too much imitating of American culture to the point that you guys don't even see it as American but at the same time will tell us as Black Americans that we don't have a culture (not specifically you per se). Which is why we ask the question, what is Black British culture?
