@@Rina-jl6yb Everything was normal in the 80s, it's only when younger kids and new things came along since then that the world became as crazy as it is now. In the 80s people wanted to look attractive or outrageous and to do either required spending time in the morning to create your look. A hairstyle with volume was preferred over flat, straight hair and people would use a lot of hair products and styling methods to get their hair into unnatural arrangements. The less natural your hair looked, the more obvious it was that you had put a lot of effort into your hairstyle and you were given at least a minimal amount of social credit for not looking like you just rolled out of bed and walked out the door. Because it is very difficult to make straight thin and fine hair look voluminous and stand away from the head instead of wisps of hair stuck to the scalp, women who could style this type of hair into fluffy, airy miracles were considered the most skilled hairdressers. It took many women thousands of hours of practice to become experts in teasing and backcombing and some skills, like knowing exactly how much hair spray to spray and where to spray it, those were more intuition and can't be taught. Trust me, my mom was one of those women. She started out in high school making bee-hives or bouffants with her friends in the 60's and by the time I was in elementary school in the 80's, she owned every method of curl maker available from the drug store. My straight, thin, fine hair defeated every method though and refused to hold a curl. So, instead I engaged in the once every 3 months ritual of getting a perm until the 80's officially ended in 1992.

My daughter had a rough patch of hair as soon as her hair came in. The rest was silky smooth. By the time she was 3 or 4, the rest of her hair would get tangled around it. I used to dump conditioner on it and spend a half hour trying to comb through it like a dredlok.
