What is Urban Kiz? - The Kizomba Channel

Urban kiz
Urban Kiz is a couple dance style that is a derivative of the Kizomba dance style. That’s why the word Kiz is short for Kizomba. The word Urban is referred to the Hip hop, R&b, Rap, House genres that influence this dance style.
Kizomba originated in Angola but Urban Kiz primarily originated in France. A big reason why, is because of the popularity of Ghetto Zouk music, hip hip and R&B remixes inspiring Kizomba dancers to change their style of dancing.
I had the opportunity to talk to one of the pioneers of Urban Kiz, Curtis Seldon, to explain the trademarks of the Urban Kiz dance style.
Connection is mostly made with the hands and arms. With Urban Kiz, leading is primarily done with both hands.
The space between the couple. The distance allows more footwork and tricks.
Dancing in a Straight Line. Urban Kiz has more linear movement. Kizomba has more circular movement.
With the popularity of Urban Kiz raising around the world, more and more schools are teaching the style and taking it to new heights.

Did any of you make a trip to Angola and interview the real heavyweights of this style of dance? I remember when it was called passada. Also I've noticed that Cape Verde is not mentioned in either of your videos given the fact that a lot of CV songs are used. Also know that CV and Angola has a strong connection with eachother. Passada has similar steps with a CV dance called mazurka hence the connection. Did anyone do their homework? Keep in mind that we are all watching. Nevertheless, I wish you all lots of success. Great job Latrell on explaining these things :) really the best way to showcase it! One other difference is that - kizomba is grounded - energy is in the ground - where urbankiz the way of stepping and energy is up in the chest..and you step lighter being more on toes. But really you are doing a great job on educating the kizomba world! Go on!

There is a misunderstanding here, These moves of Urban kizomba they are not new, in Angola people dance in different ways and I´ve seen this before so many times. The problem is that angolans don´t create names about the types of Kizomba they dance, plz kkkkkkk don´t tell me that adding rap, r&b etc moves when dancing Kizomba was created in France or It´s a new thing. In years to come, It won´t sound news if somebody tells me that Kizomba is LAtino or the like... Coz It already happpens. But I don´t blame you guys, coz It´s hard to see an angolan with a youtube channel talking about kizomba. And that´s bad! Thx for what you´re doing, you´re really doing a good job by promoting kizomba Overseas, I really appreciate. However, everytime I see sth that It´s not true, I also have the duty to deny or discuss It. Thankas!!!

So basically urban kiz is kizomba just with different moves. You can dance kizomba to the urbankiz music that is what I do. Mostly.

What is then the difference between urban kiz and kizomba fusion? Because in urban kiz there's also a fusion

I see a lot of tarraxinha elements on Urban Kiz events and dancing couples as well the style of chest-to-chest, both hands in the back. These elements and other improvising things done have been permitted and existing in Kizomba since its creation. Hmn especially tarraxinha moves, tarraxinha=kizomba, back in 80-90s in Portugal similar variation of kizomba alike was been danced in clubes, conclusion not much differences.

That´s tarraxinha, It´s also from Angolan, we dance It most in parties. For me, It´s more sensual than Kizomba.

It is a good video! But I have one question, what do you mean when you says that Kizomba has circular moviments? And Urban Kiz has more linear? Please clarify me :)

When dancing Kizomba we dance more in circles. We go round and round like a circle. That's why we say circular movements. The influence of Semba is really present in Kizomba. Urban Kiz made things more robotic and straight up. Moving in straight lines. The music plays a big part in this because of the hard beats ghetto zouk music provides. Dancing Kizomba on different music naturally changed Kizomba. Smooth circular movements became straight lines as in Linear movements to follow the Ghetto Zouk beat/music.

Kizomba is an Angolan Word. From the Kimbundu. But it never exist a DANCE or a MUSIC called Kizomba in Angola. Kizomba DANCE and MUSIC was kreatet in Lisbon by Angolan, Kapverdian and ather people from PALOP-Countries. So we can say: Kizomba the Dance and Musik is Angolan, but its Not from Angola. Kizomba the Dance and Musik was born in Portugal, but its not Portuguese. And The Ghetto Zouk has nothing to do with Angola. Its Portuguiese from the Kapverdian Island. kkkk, Kizomba was created in Angola yes, It´s a combination of Zouk+Semba. All moves they do in kizomba came from Semba. Maybe this can help you, 4 in 5 angolans knows how to dance Kizomba and Semba without a need for dance classes.

What are you on about Kizomba started in Angola not Portugal and it became a link for the PALOP countries, it is Angolan first and foremost.
