NOTE FROM TED: TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com...
Visual Snow activist Sierra Domb shares her experience of starting an evolutionary research foundation. Sierra Domb is the Founder of the Visual Snow Initiative (VSI), a non-profit dedicated to awareness, education, and research for Visual Snow Syndrome. After she began experiencing symptoms of Visual Snow, Sierra became a philanthropic pioneer, vowing to help those who suffer from the condition. Her charity has raised millions for Visual Snow. Sierra implemented innovative techniques to generate a significant and positive impact in the lives of thousands of people around the world. In doing so, she gave them a voice they never had. Sierra is passionate about empowering others to overcome any adversity. She also holds a B.S.C. in Communication Studies and is a Writer/Reporter whose articles and photographs have been published in national newspapers. Sierra is also a voice actress and nature photographer. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. So happy this is finally being talked about! I’ve had VSS since I was born, but the standard American diet, pregnancy, and increased screens definitely worsened it over the years. It got much better when I removed dairy, seed oils, gluten, processed sugar, and grains. It’s not gone, but it’s very very manageable now, and 90% of the time I don’t notice it like I once did.

I've had this condition all my life. Until recent years, I assumed everyone saw the world the same way? It has had an incredible influence on my creativity and informed many of my artwork decisions over the years. My name is arifulrohman, from India 🇮🇳,I have been suffering from vss since the age of 12. I visited many doctors but no one understood my condition. They just only ignored what I was explaining them . And another thing is , I searched for this in youtube and I didn't find any other person in India suffering this . I think I am the only one in India suffering this vss. It distracts me all the time , I can't even study properly. I am preparing for medical entrance test with this syndrome and it is very uncomfortable. After years of vss started, I found that my ears were ringing all the time. I couldn't sleep well .But luckily it went away . But this visual snow syndrome distracts me from being happy and living a healthy life. Sometimes I feel like I should suicide 😢 but then I think of my parents. I promised them to provide them a better life , that's why I am preparing for medical entrance exam. I hope one day medical science find a solution for it. 😢😢🛐

Hi :))) from India. Exact same problem here. Messed up my board exam beacause I just couldn't concentrate. Told my dad while I cried from frustration, but obviously, he just thought I was making excuses or something. He took me to the doctor, she didn't even bother listening to my explanation. Straight up looked at my dad like I didn't exist and said, "You can take her to the specialist downstairs for further checkup, but there's nothing wrong so its unnecessary." BUt he took me to her, and obviously everything turned out to be "fine". SInce then I've just sucked it up and got on with it. Believe me, there's no point obsessing over it. It took me around 10-12 months to get used to it, but now I barely notice it anymore honestly. So same advice to you too. I hope and pray it will get better for you. I´ve been suffering with this condition for about 2 years now, it came out of a very intense and stressful time in my life, the next day after it happened I noticed how my eye vission changed. Like she said in the video, I had to do my own research and go to very skeptic doctors about my condition. Thanks to people like her I was able to see that I wasnt going mad or dying and that I wasn´t alone and it's helped me, specially knowing that when I feel impared driving at night or studiyng, reading a book or trying to sleep with ringing in my ears and the anxiety of it all, there's a reason for it and most importantly, there is Hope.

Is there a treatment for it? I see permanent bright spots in my eyes. I do not know if this is visual snow or not. I have been suffering from this disease for 15 years.

I have had this as long as I can remember but didn’t think of it being anything unusual until I was 18, something needs to be done about this. It makes me feel worn out especially when working as I use a laptop. I have heard it can be associated with aura migraines and dyslexia of which I have both, I don’t know if anyone else has heard the same.

I discovered today that I have Visual Snow. I believe I have had this condition since childhood. However, now I'm terrified that the symptoms might worsen. Did your symptoms get worse?

I'm an artist. I've had visual snow as far back as I can remember (age 3 or 4) only mine are clear, yep, see through. Never really bothered me until I've gotten older and developed other symptoms. It's those symptoms that's the pain!

Has anyone else hallucinated in the visual snow? I used to hallucinate a lot as a child and it was the visual snow that made up the characters… I just want to know if anyone can relate.

I ‘see’ things in my snow as well. Not well defined and always changing, kind of like cloud gazing.

I have been living with this condition for 13 years now. It was triggered by smoking weed when I had a cold. In the beginning it was so scary and I had panic attacks and derealization. I still feel anxious every morning for 'no reason' but I get up and go on with my day. I feel like vs is just one symptom of something that should be or is already called nervous system dysregulation disorder or something like that. Basically our nervous systems have become too sensitive and overreacts to all kind of stimuli and make us experience visual snow, tinnitus, derealization, touch sensitivity etc

Mine came out of the blue about 2.5 years ago. It’s most obvious in my case with contrast. Like in my dark room looking up at the white ceiling. It’s all zipping light. Mine was exactly the same time frame as a profound spiritual experience that also came out of nowhere. I have no other symptoms. I’m wondering if what’s actually going on is that the person is actually getting a glimpse behind the veil so to speak? I can always see it regardless of contrast very subtle when I’m fully present and not thinking. Just aware. It seems as though the “background” that all things are seen against is that moving light. It seems like Im seeing the space of the present moment… not what happens in the now, but the space where everything is and is known. Could it be possible that this is an evolutionary phenomenon and humans are evolving to see a deeper reality?

i have it almost 2 years it did not change but you slowly adapt. Tinnitus and hyperacusis snd nictalopia are the most difficult to overcome. Avoid Stress!

I was 10 in 2006 when mine started. Months of testing brought back nothing. My parents stopped believing me. Nobody believed me. I learned to shut up and live in fear of going blind for the past 17 years. My life would be different if I had support and was told it was going to be ok.

I’m suffering so much 24/7 because of VSS. I really hope there's a cure. Here in South Korea, there are just about three professors who know VSS and no one is interested in VSS. It is meaningless to take only Ramictal prescribed. Please help me and others who are suffering from VSS.
