This makes a lot of sense to me as someone with low visual weight features. Dramatic eye makeup always looked bad on me and I didn't know why. Sometimes I've tried to go with dramatic lip colours instead, but that doesn't look as good on me as it does on many other women either. So I will never have big eyes, but I can wear natural or hardly any makeup and look more harmonious, so now I know why and that makes me happy.

I don't think soft looks look bad on me, but dramatic looks look better on me which makes sense because despite having tiny eyes I'm too angular and have deepset eyes so more dramatic looks (no fake lashes) look more harmonious with my too sharp angles. :(
@mj_dolman5122
@mj_dolman5122 8 ай бұрын
@@Call-me-Al she didn't talk about angles really but you should go witih the look that makes you feel confident. My face is more rounded with chubby cheeks even when I'm thin, so that could be another reason why softer and more natural looks are more harmonious for me, which is also reflected in the lines of my clothing.

Great video, Jenn! I think it should be noted that looking at selfies can be misleading about visual weight due to the distortion a selfie photo has. As someone with low visual weight features, I often like my selfies more than regular photos because I can get the high visual weight look that is popular.

There was an article out last year about the rise in rhinoplasty because of selfies. The way cell phone cameras are built are that they focus more on the center and anything in the center is enlarged 30% ( average), so your nose is seen and captured as 30% larger than it actually is when you take a selfie, you don’t get an accurate sense of what your face really looks like. The most accurate photo of someone’s face is 5 feet away from the camera- this is according to the article.

i must be low visual weight - nothing is striking about me. But that's precisely why I have to accentuate my eyes. When I do, I become visible all of a sudden. People compliment me for my eyes. But without make up, there is nothing to compliment : I have cold brown eyes, uneven eyelids and light and short eyelashes.

At University we learned that visual weight is literally about weight. For example in a life drawing class we were drawing a nude. The lecturer would come around to each student and would give direction on what they could improve on. This is one of those moments that stuck in my mind because it has made me a better artist. It was life changing He said: To ground (visual weight) the person in my drawing, I need to see and define where the heavier parts of the object is and make it darker or emphasis the area, such as a thicker line or a shadow at the base of the hip so it doesn’t look like the figure is floating in the air. So yes it’s about your eye being drawn to a more defined area but it’s more about contrast level and saturation as well. If you look at seasonal colour analysis Winter= high contrast (high visual weight and soft winter(medium to high.). Some soft winters may be like summers with a lower visual weight) Autumn 3 types of Autumns are the same as winter in visual weight. The higher the contrast and the thicker the lines such as eyebrows and hair, then the heavier the visual weight. Certain shapes have visual weight or the effect of visual weight. Rounded curved lines are softer in appearance so therefore lighter in visual weight. Small rounded Ingénue types of women are lighter in visual weight regardless of body weight. Natural body types like Jennifer Aniston has a heavier visual frame. Blunt angles are heavier in visual weight. But Jennifer is a Summer so she has a blended aspect about her too which is lighter as well. Whatever dominates will be the focus.

You just explained the points I was thinking about while watching the video very nicely, thank you so much! I think people who have at least a bit of an artistic background will automatically view people and objects a bit differently than anyone who has absolutely no relationship with anything artistic. I used my background in drawings, paintings, photography and videography, also in doing hair, make up and choosing outfits for people. But I was never able to do those things "right" for myself. That's how I got interested in Kibbe, Kitchener and seasonal color analysis. To be able to look at myself from another perspective. Things like your comment help me tying everything together as I like to combine any aspect of visual influence. E.g. I feel like my entire face has a pretty high visual weight, but I am a light spring and also a flamboyant natural with a heavy influence of gamine essence (and a few others that can stick out more or less depending on the surroundings). However, I can also add more emphasis to the ethereal and ingenue parts of my essence blend, but that never feels quite right as soon as I move (it works nicely in photography and videography, as long as it's a controlled scenario). When I add to the gamine part of my essence blend and don't overdo it, it looks balanced and "at home". I always feel like my Kibbe ID sits a bit more in the background but gives me the freedom to add some ease into my outfits and my make up. Like adding only slightly defined lines and shapes rather than very structured and staccato lines a Kibbe gamine would need. It's finally fun to play with my own looks rather than just doing it for others. I also wanted to note: I never did any of the things meantioned above professionally besides videography. But I had a lot of hobbies incorporating all of these things and I always got asked to help style models, do make up, assist in photography and lighting and choosing outfits for the models. It was a lot of fun and taught me a lot. Visual weight also occurs in interior design, clothing designs/outfits, nature and basically anything else we can see with out bare eyes. And if we really learn to understand and use it as a tool, we can create literally any impact we want in anything we can visually influence. It's a fun tool and I think I always used it without even knowing.

4:14 this is a PERFECT explanation of why i thought big lashes did not suit me. I'm black and i'm sure you've seen in social media that big lashes are usually used to exaggerate our eyes. The look is gorgeous, but once i tried it on me i realised that it was 'too heavy' for my face. I switched to cat eye lashes which are usually lighter and people would compliment me much more with them on! Soon enough, i found the perfect kinds of falsies for me where whispier, 10-11mm lashes that i'd often cut to 3/4 length! They just work so much better amongst my low visual weight/ ingenue features!

I have low visual weight and low contrast features with light blonde hair, light lashes, light eyebrows, light eyes. None of my features really stand out, but I honestly like it since it looks overall very harmonic. If I wear make up I look drastically different and if it's just a tad too much I look borderline clownish. I save SO much time in the morning cause I only apply bit of rouge and lipstick and I'm ready to go. However, sometimes I really envy women who can pull off heavy make with smokey eyes or bold lips, they can play around with different looks without looking like a circus pony.

Makes so much sense. I’m a low weight face, my sister high weight face. When I do very light makeup with special care to make my skin look healthy and she does a dark smoky eye and red lips, we both look equally done up. I’ve never bothered to learn how to do better eye makeup and wished I had that skill, but now I don’t have to stress about nailing that bold look. I’ll find more examples of glowy, soft for my coloring with I think is deep, soft autumn.

You're the few channels that I consider are absolutely full of quality material. Not only because you give useful information, but you teach things in such an easy way to grasp, and you also don't fluff things up with opinions or make it about yourself (and when you do, we're grateful to know about you!). I'm just very happy that you make these videos. Image and beauty is an important topic and it's great and refreshing to see it through the eyes of someone who has a more scientific point of view and not materialistic (you know, more facts and less opinions). @stylemejenn I'm a "True Winter" with pale skin. Seasonal color (and systems like Kibbe) is good as a reference but it's not set in stone, and there's confliciting and confusing info because it's flawed. One can pull off colors that are not their season if they can match their makeup and clothes to harmonize the look (but whether worth the effort or not is another matter). Like your skin color... you can pull off both cool and warm colors not due to having neutral tones (it leans more warm for sure!) but because your skin is more dusky vs clear. So even if you pick a cool color, as long as it has grey added that match your chroma it will harmonize.

I'm so glad I finally got around to watching this one! I have a lot of low visual weight features -- fair skin, blue eyes, light brown hair, very pale and thin brows, small lips and not very defined cheek or jaw bones -- but I have a long middle third and a prominent nose. I'm like a combo Hailey Beiber and Renee Zellweger. I'm learning from you that the best thing for me to do is create visual width and to bring subtle emphasis to my eyes. I've also figured out recently that the competing energy of my yin features and yang nose looks best if I contrast the yin and harmonize the yang. So a more natural makeup, bob hair and Ray-Ban glasses will make my nose look in proportion, my yin features more delicate, and give overall a kind of cool vibe. But if I harmonize the yin with more feminine glasses, heavier makeup, longer or softer hair, it just makes my yang features take over and instead of looking pretty and feminine, I look dowdy, frumpy and matronly. It's been a real game changer that's given me the confidence to take some risks that I've always wanted to explore but wasn't sure how.

This was well explained. So easy to understand. I have high visual weight in my eyes , eyebrows , cheek bones and lips . My eyes are always the prominent focus because of the contrast. I don't look good with short hair in particularly. The shortest hairstyle that suits me is a gradient ,angled lob cut. Anything shorter or straight blunt cuts make my face look fat and babyish.

That is right, I have low visual weight and before I knew it I barely spent money on makeup. Instead, I always spent on skincare and time, effort and money to my hair because I felt so ugly when using makeup that I preferred to take care of my skin and hair to balance due to not being able to use makeup. And people (even before startin skincare and hair care) always the first two things that complimented me were skin and hair. And of course, after taking care of them, those are always the first compliments I get, and then when people met me they started complimenting my eyes, or my lips, that is why I always felt ugly because since my skin and hair always got the compliments, I thought there were the only features that made me beautiful.

I like this video, thanks! I analyzed my face and I have medium visual weight in my eyes and mouth, high weight in my wider nose. My eyes are smallish, deeply set, and high contrast and my lips medium size/contrast, on a round oval face. What I like best for my type of face is basically the Marylin look or a French style, a bold lip and accentuating the outer corners of the eyes. I like to keep the brows defined but soft with light or medium contrast. All I need if I'm in a hurry (besides concealer) is a bit of eye liner on the outer corners, mascara, and most importantly lipstick, which doubles as my blush :)

I'm a case of low visual weight but with deep contrast. Genuine makeup technique suits me the most but using my winter colours instead of pastel colours. That being said, bold makeup would not make me look bad either because I naturally has smokey eyes and lips already. It just that my cheeks are quite fleshy and my features are not well defined. I don't have a high visual weight despite the natural contrast I have in my skin and features. So, balancing technique works the best on me. Though sometimes if I want to go bold in either only the eyes or lips, it's not a problem either. The difference is not big between balancing features or emphasizing features on me.

It's all about balance! Even though I have darker coloring and features, I can identify with SJP or Julia Roberts because of the prominence of my nose. I gravitate towards eye liner and deeper, smoky eye colors in the crease (pale colors of shadow look dreadful). I wear tinted moisturizer and a bit of concealer, but I rarely use blusher and never use contour. Sheer color with shine on my lips works the best for balancing my overall appearance. I was trying to wear my hair with long layers and long bangs, then I went to a lob. But, all my travel photos make my broad forehead steal the attention from my eyes, and I feel like it just accentuated all of my wrinkles. Now, I am sporting a pixie with bangs, and I feel like I look more youthful and my features are more balanced...my eyes, smile, cheekbones and jawline really shine. Guess I have a medium to high visual weight?

Thank you for including the Lucy Liu analysis. I also have high cheekbones and freckles and everything you said clicked into place when I saw that example. I think I have medium to low visual weight, as the eye is drawn to my eyes, cheeks, and freckles. I find that my eyes look best when I draw attention to them with subtle warm tones, like dusty rose, coral, tangerine, and brown. I enjoy the jet-black winged eyeliner on occasion, but I think the coolness of the black and the sharp lines age me. I don't know if you've done a video on this, but I was recently thinking about the impact of sharp, distinct lines and blurry, soft lines in our faces and bodies. For example, I think maximalist outfits look better on me because the eye can move around to look at textures and prints, just like it does on my low-weight face. However, if I wear something minimal and stark (think corporate, like navy suit), then those harsh, precise lines and strong color contrasts don't look as good, because the outfit is stark and contrasts or draws attention away from my face and body, which are softer, more textured, or more. . . muddied.

I used to feel like there was *too* much going on around my eyes: they're dark brown, and I'm very pale, so there's a lot of contrast, and glasses brought more attention up there. On top of that, I like having bangs. Not all the time, I periodically grow them out and cut them back, lol. I got a bunch of lip piercings, and now I feel there's more balance overall. Not that I'd recommend that to people who aren't into alt-styles or piercings! It's just something that worked for my style.

Wow, I knew what you meant by high and low visual weight in faces before I ever watched your video even though I have never heard anyone use those words to describe faces but I had in reference to art and design. I have blond hair and blue eyes and very delicate features. I have had makeovers and I felt prettier when I walked in. I always look my best at the pool or beach, but I never feel right going without makeup or under made up at dinner or when I was young out at a club. I have tried so hard to figure out how much makeup it takes on my eyes before the beauty goes right out of them. Dyed lashes look much prettier on me than mascara but I got afraid of the dye and stopped using it. I had a "famous" makeup artist do my makeup about 10 years ago or so at my hair salon. I tried to explain the concept to him but he acted like I was talking nonsense. Also they made up one side of my face and not the other and compared the two which I found humiliating because I knew I didn't look better in the made up side. It felt hopeless. I have known I look prettier with less makeup since I was about 20 but I never understood why till now. I can't begin to thank you enough for helping me crack this code. I wish I had this when I was younger.

Same for me, in my case, it really affected my self steem by having low visual weight. It all started when teenager I wanted to look pretty with makeup like my friends but never looked good. I knew something was different with my face but I couldn’t figure it out. I soon realized that the more natural I looked, the best I looked. So people were always complimenting my natural beauty and advising that if I looked this good natural, I should doll up but they could never understand why I always refused. All my beauty washed away with makeup. And I always felt uncomfortable on formal situations I just wanted to look that good with the standard makeup and clothes like high visual weight women (which I did not know it at that time). And I always felt ugly for that. I even considered specific plastic surgery to make me more “beautiful” but those surgeries were only to add high visual weight on my face now that I realize. If I should have known this low/high visual weight before, I think my life would’ve been so diferent.

I think that lighter hair color suits to people with low visual weight more, because dark hair creates the contrast between accentuative hair and non-accentuative face. Although people with high visual weigh pull out dark hair, because it accentuates their face even more.

But even in the video, Sarah Jessica Parker can pull off blonde hair. I think I'm low contrast, and blonde was the worst look I ever had, that with any caramel colour. Nature knows best. Most of the time, natural hair looks better.

@@tuscanleather3209 i don't think that natural hair always looks better. Nature created hair to help you to warm your body and not for aesthetical uses, so nature doesn't care what your hair color is and how well does it compliment your face.

@sashaj1 The function of hair doesn't matter when we're talking about harmony. High contrast people will have a much bigger difference in hair, eyes, and lips than those with lower ones. Rarely, you see a person on the street and think to yourself, I hope that hair isn't natural.. It looks so dull. I've seen a woman with natural highlights. She was quite soft in colouring, but the hair looked marbled, and it was all natural. Besides...nature does care about beauty. Ever looked at male peacocks... There is so much beauty in this world, not only man made one's. If we were to look at all nature's beauty, there is a purpose. If our looks are 'to attract attention of the opposite sex', then it would make a lot of sense that we evolved to match our appearances.

This has always confused me, but I think I understand it a lot better after watching your video! However I'm still not quite sure what side I fall on. I have somewhat prominent, round, dark blue eyes, and a lot of natural contrast between my face and my hair/brows, so I'm leaning towards higher visual weight. But the arch of my brows and the placing of my eyes can pull them slightly apart (much less extreme than Anya Taylor Joy but I related to a few things you said about her), and my lips are also rounded and noticeable, so they pull some of the attention, too. I have an average nose, fairly equal thirds, and a face somewhere between an oval and a diamond, so nothing else really grabs the attention. I think my best looks are classic and glamorous, with both eye and lip emphasis. Way too much eye makeup (like a super dark smoky eye) can feel too heavy, however if the makeup is too minimal or nude it doesn't do me any favors, and I can look sickly. Nude lipstick is terrible (though that may also be due to my coloring - I'm a bright spring). I try to find that sweet spot of makeup that can help emphasis my natural contrast without going overboard, though I can have fun playing around to an extent. I feel like I need striking but harmonious at the same time. Would this put me in the middle or is that more on the high side?

I don't really wear make up anymore and I have no problems with that but when I do, I can put some mascara on for a Bambi eye effect and I look all nice and sweet or I can go with a heavy smokey eyeshadow with or without bold lips and rock that style. Same with the hair with the exception of not going shorter than my shin/jawline.

I never could understand why I Iooked so different from other European-descent American females of my age until, as an adult, I saw some of my school-age group photos. My head, face and features are about a quarter to a third smaller than the average girls in my classes were. It makes sense, I have very tiny frame, too, but was not super-short, just narrow-boned (lost 2 inches from aging now, age 63). The resulting musculature is proportionally lighter, too. This gives me a delicate look that belies my normal weight and good health, except for that ghastly, pasty, Euro-pallor, which I can’t seem to do much about. So I suppose my face has lower visual weight, my contrast level of coloring is low to medium. My later classmates called me bird-bones, which I didn’t really understand at the time. Of course, I later learned that birds have not only delicate, but literally lightweight bones. Petites size clothing works a lot better on me, I never had the shoulder or hip width for regular sizes, my frame is very narrow.

Is it the control or lack of control of lighting from povarizzi flashes vs. studio lighting (not to mention photoshopping)? Or is the high contrast a magician's misdirection? Whenever I see a friend with high-contrast lip liner I have to bite MY lips to stop myself from telling them that their lip color has worn off in the middle. I do not understand the aesthetic intention and I feel uncomfortable about the sexual message whether intentional or not.

I feel like I have a facial configuration kinda like Anya's where both the lips and the eyes call the eye (in my case, probably the lips first) but I also have a longer middle third that I feel creates some empty space in my face in my cheeks and below the eyes. What could I do to bring more attention to the eyes and mouth and away from this space? Bolder eye makeup and bold lipstick? I thought of perhaps always wearing glasses that go low on the cheeks as well, but I'm always unsure about my blush placement relative to the glasses.

If you decide to pluck your eyebrows, only pluck from the bottom to remove stray hairs. Leave the top as it is because Mother Nature usually knows what she’s doing, giving you a near-perfect shape. People who mess with the tops of their eyebrows are usually remorseful. Remember, thick eyebrows read as young, healthy and strong because they can thin as you age. Also, keep in mind that, if you pluck your eyebrows, they might not grow back, especially if you pluck them over and over again because plucking traumatizes the follicles. Something many ladies learn the hard way. :-(
