I wanted to be lazy and edit my videos on the couch using my laptop connected to my NAS over WiFi . I figured upgraded to WiFi 6 would accomplish that. Did it???

Enjoyed the video but feel a lot of people really miss the point of Wifi 6 and "speed". The improvements are focused on multiple clients talking at the same time. Wifi is a shared medium (similar to hubs) -- given more tech uses Wifi it's more about consistency & reliability, which speed then becomes a by-product for Wifi 6. Personally I don't care about the speed for a single device using Wifi on a non-loaded network. Show me the home network doing what people do all the time. Have Zoom calls, streaming the multitude of content, home automation devices chatting, people walking around, ALL at the same time --- Wifi 6 wins hands down.

I agree, that's I mentioned this would be good for people with tons of devices and IoT stuff. For the basic users though, you prob won't see much difference.

nice to see im not the only one testing those king of things. In my case I upgraded to wifi 6 about a year ago. Back then Wifi 6e was not out. I only have 2 devices that are WIFI 6 capable, my laptop and my Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. In my case the WiFi6 signal is way less stable then wifi5. I now use my old tp-link 5400 as my wifi downstair and only use wifi 6 on my Asus ax-11000. Over all I only use wifi 6 to justify the cost and not because it's necessarly better. The range is very good for both routers and I am in a busy neighborhood ( over 10 neighbor wifi network ). nice video, I enjoyed it.

To be honest my 6th Gen Apple AirPort Extreme is still amazing in 2022. Have it running on a 500 megabit per second ISP via COX and it produces a solid 400 via WiFi in my mid sized home. It’s rock solid reliability and range are what’s keeping it in service.The 30% theoretical increase to AX isn’t worth the issues I’ve heard of with regard to router connectivity issues… great review!

I have watched and read every video or article on the internet around the upgrade and 5 to 6, and no one came close to the thoughtfulness and clarity of your explanation. I've got a Synology RT2600ac and wanted to move to the RT6600ax and use the 2.5g port to get better LAN access to my mac mini with my raid video storage. Id love to see a video on how your wireless setup now works for video editing, and and update in the future to 6e

I'm using a 2020 M1 mac mini as a server with an OWC Thunderbay 4 Raid for storage, and basically I was getting about 58MB/s on the wifi 5 and it went up to about 70MB/s when I got a wifi 6 with a 2.5gb ethernet port. So I think similar, about a 30% lift... not sure if thats worth the cost of the new router :0 I'm assuming the mac mini is probably slowing it down from the speeds that you were getting?

Great description of speed test "weakest link" senerio!!! And YESSSS the marketing bull exposed! THANKS!! O am on wifi 4 equipment, but we have newer devices with wifi 6 & 6E. I think we are ok collectively but I do have a bad spot for 5 GHZ band, so I was looking to drop a WAPt in that area just mainly to boost the 5GHZ . I am thinking of just a "2x2" in that area will work, but was trying to look at wifi 6 vs wifi 5. SO, price is my main concern, nice to know that WONDERFUL table of channel width N speed of "1x1" & "2x2!!" Thanks again for the information.

I have 3 Asus RT-AX86S (a variant on the AT-AX86U as the 86S doesn't have a 2.5 gig WAN port. My primary router is connected to a 300 mbps AT&T fiber connection. I have 3 routers to set up an AiMesh network so I don't have dead zones in the house. For a 300 mbps internet connection WiFi 6 handles it with ease. The sticking point that's going to affect most people is the lack of WiFi 6 clients. I have 2 M1 MacBook Airs and an iPhone 12, all of which support WiFi 6. Speed is great. Signal is consistent and fast. I'd say WiFi 6 is worth it, just as long as you have the clients to connect to it.

I do a lot of file transfers from Laptop to a HDD connected to a router, I can say the speed going from Wifi 5 to Wifi 6 is almost the same. I have upgraded my card to Wifi 6E AX210, where Wifi 6 actually shines is Range. Wifi 6 even at the furthest corner will give you better range and speed at longer distance, but if you're in the same room as the router, then expect very minimal speed gain.
@RaidOwl

Yeah it’ll depend heavily on your client/router config. A 4x4 WiFi 5 client will be faster than a 2x2 WiFi 6 client.

Many individuals on reddit, openwrt forums, etc. could have saved you the walk down the road. xD I'm definitely gonna forget about wifi 6, but for range I'm gonna add a wifi 'halow' access point. That will completely demolish 2.4ghz. I've seen 1km+ is possible depending on location and interference. Still no really great options as far as routers or usb/m.2 adapters(and no driver support for most things) so I'm building a couple of test units with a couple ras-Pis. That will be cool to be able to use my home connection anywhere within a HUGE radius, and just think about the IOT sensors that could be made possible with such range and the power saving features that are built in to the standard.

for your 10Gbps port on your switch, better to check if it support to be running on 2.5Gbps mode, otherwise you will only get 1Gbps for your AP, for what i know currently only very few switches support 2.5Gbps, especially special ones, because i didn't find any switch both support 10Gbps eth and 2.5Gbps eth.

I agree, but for most people who buy a MacBook Air or any consumer grade laptop, that just isn’t a selling point. It’s like these theoretical router speeds… nobody will ever see nor use them. And for those who do need every last bit of of bandwidth just plug in your CAT6 cable via adapter and enjoy your full ISP speeds for gaming or editing. I mean that’s what most KZbinrs do. Cables will always be faster than WiFi
@kwinzman
@kwinzman 2 жыл бұрын
@@nordicpride9708 I disagree. The difference between 3x3 and 2x2 is noticable in real world. And your suggestion of just using cables is like saying yeah if you can't get the book that you want just buy a movie instead. It's not the same.
@nordicpride9708
@nordicpride9708 2 жыл бұрын
@@kwinzman If you need the best speeds for editing and are using WiFi you simply aren’t a serious person. Cables will blow any S**T WiFi signal out of the water. No contest. Again laymen folks don’t care, and the 3% of you nerds who think WiFi is suitable for high demand use are just ignoring the facts. If you want the best speeds it’s a wired connection. If not you can go be a hipster at Starbucks and use WiFi. Albeit getting lower speed

The problem with this video is. The laptop that this guy used doesn't have a Wi-Fi 6 network card. The network card needs to have a Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax network card. For him to do the test properly. And he need to use the 5ghz band only. Not the 2.4ghz. This means he need to separate the bandwidth. 2.4ghz is for the older devices that doesn't support the new Wi-Fi 6. And always keep your 2.4ghz and 5ghz separated. For better performance. All newer devices should use only 5ghz. As long as it shows up in the 5ghz network name in the network list. With the 2.4ghz in the same list. Older devices that can only see the 2.4ghz network name. And can't see the 5ghz network name, in the network list should use the 2.4ghz only. But you need to keep all bandwidths separated. For better results. Never combined them. And yes I know that I'm correct I've tried both set ups. And I got better results with multiple network names. After all newer, and older devices want use the 2.4ghz when not force to use the correct bandwidth. So separate your bandwidth networks.
