Iv changed my cranks on road bike mountain bike and gravel bike to 170, particularly on on my Cinelli road bike that i had 175 cranks on, now changed to 170 and at the same time put a 52 chainring and i find it loads better on speed and hills 👍

Sounds like you are doing well getting 12500 out of a crankset. My checkpoint now on 7500 miles has had 2 replacement GRX cranks at approx 3000 and 6000 miles despite replacing the chain when stretched and washing / lubing the chain especially after every wet or dirty ride. On both occasions the big ring was starting to get a bit shark toothy. First time I changed the entire 2x crankset, 2nd time I just replaced the big ring with a bit of disassembly. I had to put an 11 speed ring on as you can't seem to get "10 speed" big rings any more (although I am not entirely sure what the difference is between 10sp and 11sp on the front?!). The cassette got changed at the same time each case. Bottom brackets I just replace as and when they creak or crunch

I think Im on chain six..... Tend to change once past 0.5 wear.... I have found the distance covered can be erratic.. Probably due to the weather and how much on/off road.... The canal local to me has a lot of grit that turns into a grinding paste in winter!

I only get just less than a thousand miles on a eleven speed chain. They recommend you can change the chain three times before you change the cassette and chain rings so I would say you are doing very well. When I say they recommend I mean shimano and if you watch park tool on KZbin they also say the same thing. Keep up the good work Paul 🚴🚴🚴

Hi Gerard, yes - I think I have been 4-5 chains on cassette ...... I'd echo taht - keeping everything clean especially winter mud and grit definitely helps ..... 12500 on the front sprcket increasingly I think is just time to change it!

Baring some kind of damage, I wouldn't feel the need to replace a whole crankset unless the spindle was worn to the point of "play" and I imagine how quick that will happen comes down to rider weight, BB choice, FTP, whether........................etc. And varies dramatically, but the cranks should outlast the chainrings. However, 105 is a funny old beast when it comes to pricing, a set of R7000 Chainrings will set you back around £80, the whole crankset can be had for £100, and you can have R7100 cranks for about £10 more (They work perfectly with 11 speed)

Hi Chris..... When i last had a the crank out there was a little wear from when a bottom bracket failed but not the orth changing it..... This wear is on the big ring, but just as you say.. Cost of a of replacing is close to new crankset! The crank arm is very scuffed / woen and oo from overshoes / winter boots!

I hate noises and knocks when out on my rides it's really off putting. I think my crank and bottom bracket went after about 3000 miles. 12500 is pretty good

18,000 km (12,000 miles) on my SRAM Rival group set. No real noticeable wear Paul, though I do wax my chain.
