In Finland all of our bubble gum have xylitol instead of sugar, as the bubble gum was often marketed as something to help with tooth issues. Due to the positive effects on teeth, the gum is also given out regularily for children after school lunches :) Of course you shouldn't swallow your bubble gum, but the xylitol tastes pretty good when chewed.

With dogs, it confuses their pancreas causing hypoglycemia and liver failure. As humans, there are many cons as to why I avoid eating xylitol. It may be ok for toothbrushing, mouthwash but consuming/ingesting is not healthy - especially on a regular basis. It can cause IBS, osmotic diarrhea, gas and dysbiosis. It ferments in the gut and disrupts flora which can lead to immune issues along with it increases phosphorus and oxalates which can cause kidney stones in some people. Ironically, Dupont is one of the largest makers of hardwood derived xylitol having plants in America, Europe and China. Xylitol is man made after taking xylose from birch or xylan from corn and needs to be broken down in a process called acid hydrolyzing. This requires a high temperature and a catalyst known as Raney nickel, an aluminum alloy - heavy metal. After this process known as hydrogenation, one is left with xylose and acetic acid. The acidic acid needs to be removed by heating it so it can evaporate. The resulting syrup is pure xylose which must be stabilized into a crystallized sugar alcohol by mixing it with ethanol. A few spins in a centrifuge creates xylitol. Chemists are experimenting with copper, wheat straw and fermenting yeast or sulphuric acid instead of raney nickel, as well & still not truly healthy. With the catalyst normally being raney nickel an aluminum alloy it can be harmful for those with MTHFR gene mutations that can't detox heavy metals which aluminum accumulates and can pass the blood to brain barrier causing Alzheimer's/dementia with long time consumption. Most xylitol is from China (usually GMO corn based) since they hand harvest their corn and have an abundance of corncobs they opted to profit off manufacturing xylitol. Birch xylitol is expensive and harder to find but there are a few companies in US like Espure and Health Garden. However, all xylitol products will cause gas and GI disturbances if consumed as a sugar substitute since it is osmotic that draws water out of the body and into the intestines causing peristalsis (the bowels to move).

Thomas DeLauer says sugar alcohols, like xylitol, rots in the gut. Can you comment on this Dr. Berg?
@___xyz___5 жыл бұрын
What does "rot in the gut" even mean? Does it cause food in the gut to rot? Does the gut itself rot? Sugar alcohols themselves can not _"rot"_ in the traditional sense of material decay. It's either absorbed and/or metabolised, or it's not. If it's edible to bacteria, then they will eat it, and make waste products in a myriad of forms, from (intestinal) gas to dopamine to neurotoxins, all depending on the microbes. The actual effects vary greatly from one sugar alcohol to the next. (In fact, chemically, sucrose is considered an alcohol. But it's way different from, say, erythritol.) As do gut microbes vary from person to person. But does it "rot"? Well, what if it does. Is that a problem? People have been eating plants containing sugar alcohols for millennia. Admittedly, never in such huge amounts as today. But if it was such a problem, I'm sure we would've known already. Either way, if you're worried about bacterial overgrowth, or aim to completely optimise your health, stop consuming sugars altogether. Simple sugars, as least, will eventually deteriorate the gut lining mucus and cause inflammation. Other sugar alcohols may do this, too. We don't know this for sure. But if you're super worried and not addicted to sweets like the rest of us, why take the chance.

I have a definite allergy to sorbitol. According to my GI doc I should stay away from all sugar alcohols, which I believe xylitol is. I do have IBS so I don’t risk any ....ol sugar alcohols....another would be malitol. Chicory root, or insulin, seems to be another trigger. Can you comment?

Hello Dr. Berg! What amount of xylitol in grams/mcg etc. registers as a 7 on the Glycemic Index?🤷♀️ Thank you. Just curious, as I enjoy chewing gum with xylitol to combat snacking urges but don't want to spike insulin unknowingly.😁
@andycivil Жыл бұрын
The glycemic index is a comparison with glucose on a per-gram basis. So, whatever insulin spike arose from 10g of glucose, if you took 10g of xylitol instead, the insulin spike would be 7% of that. It's like being able to say that balsa wood has 20% of the density of water: you don't need to know how much balsa wood there is, it's still gonna float.

Be careful consuming too much. After a few weeks I ate around 5-7 grams a day for a few days and it upset my digestion for a week. It was not pleasant. Start out slow and gauge how you feel.

You arent supposed to eat just chew and through it out and that only 3 times after meals

I just noticed a lot of liquid vitamins, like B12 drops, use Xylitol as a sweetener. Hm....I wonder how many carbs I am getting from that

Hey Dr. Berg, do you have any idea why xylitol is the first ingredient list in my daily GABA supplement? Doesn't seem right for calming! Thanks

If you are on keto, no. Jaggery spikes insulin just like sugar

@@danielasantos2295 I'm at a point right now that i don't recommend any artificial sweetener anymorr. Stevia causes brain fog. So what i do is whenever i need somethimg sugarish i use sugar when on keto. But not more than 20g net carbs a day. Peace. U should give yourself a rest from keto anyway when u do it and find joy in eating food again.

Hi Dr. Berg, my biggest body problem is my weight and now that I am over 60 I am loosing my energy. With Keto Diet I know that I can intelligently loose weight and regain energy. However I have a problem, I cook for my family, and they do not have the courage to follow keto, so I have to cook pasta and pizza for them, and that is quite uncomfortable.
@snorkchop8134 Жыл бұрын
Maybe try a freeze dried grass-fed liver supplement. That's got everything for vitamins and energy. You have to start slow because it's potent , starting with one a day a week, and then moving up to higher dose each week till meeting full dose. I think you could try getting heirloom wheat to make pizzas for your family, fermenting the dough. That's what Europe does. I'm not sure about spaghetti. Heirloom wheat too--- but I bet that'd be hard to make from scratch?
