If you're still getting your footing with reading patterns, I can help you get started :) I have several free patterns up on my website (www.jaydainstitches.com) and most of them have video tutorials that go with them, so you can follow along with the pattern while you watch the video and the language and flow of the patterns will start to make more sense. Having said that, everyone writes patterns a little differently and this changes with the general lexicon - older vintage patterns often use slightly different language and I've also noticed that they assume the reader knows a lot about crocheting and there can be big gaps in directions! However, once you get into the groove of crochet and reading the short hand, you'll have an easier time navigating the older stuff :) Have fun!

I was so sad when I made the association that acrylic and polyester are oil industry products. It will never biodegrade and it contributes to the micro plastic issue that's quickly developing in our water supply. I'm trying to deal with only natural fibers again.

There is superwash wool out there that you can machine wash without felting it! There is also lots of yarn out there that is not scratchy. Merino yarn is beautifully soft and cozy. I make a lot of baby items out of that soft superwash wool and haven't had any complaints. I don't see a lot of nice wool out there at big box stories, but craft stores, local yarn shops, and online retailers like Knitpicks have loads of beautiful soft fluffy stuff. I like synthetics and cottons, but I feel like wool gets a bad rap when there is nice wool out there.

HI Stephanie, if the pillow is going to get a lot of use, then you want a sturdy non-pilling yarn (wool, wool blends, polyester and mercerized cotton are great). If it's decorative and not likely to be used much, then just about any yarn you like will do 😊

Hi Virginia, yarn generally says on the label what the fiber content is, and if it's mixed. If Cotton is in the title of the yarn, my guess is that it's 100% cotton or very close too :)

The other yarn I chose was a deep maroon sock yarn. The BonBon yarn was a deep brown with gold flecks. I have darkish brown hair. Now when I wear it, it looks like a golden aura is holding back my hair LOL.

Hi Roze, yes! You can gently hand wash (by gently squeezing) your skein in a sink full of cool water with just a little dab of hair conditioner. Then rinse it well and let the skein full air dry before you use it.

Good Morning Jayda - I got all excited about BonBon yarn and purchased 2 packages from Amazon on line. On the day it came I whooped and cheered until I tried to crochet with it. I have arthritis in my hands and it is SO fine that I can't seem to make it work. In addition I got the "party pack" which has a metallic fiber running through it. So, my question is, can I piggyback it with another acrylic yarn? I don't mind hand washing so the metallic fiber won't be a problem. I've tried using a little teeny tiny hook (2.0, 2.5) and my stitches still look awful! I'm not a beginner but this yarn is making me feel like one. Your thoughts would be welcomed. It is eating my lunch! Jace

Hi Jace! You can definitely piggyback that bon bon yarn with an acrylic yarn of a larger size. Working with tiny hooks and thin yarn is a challenge for a lot of body parts LOL Fingers, eyes, shoulder muscles. ..

Hi Venus! I hope you got our answer on Instagram, but just in case... Cotton all the way! It's cooler, it breaths and it washes well too :) I would recommend working up a sample in the yarn weight you're interested in trying to get a feel for the look and thickness of the fabric :)

+Jennifer Rogers Hi Jennifer, in general, yes! Always read the label (if you have them) for your yarn, but most crochet and knit cotton yarn is super durable and washes well. I would recommend cool wash and low heat dry. Cotton doesn't always shrink, but nearly anything will if you apply enough heat! Thank you for watching :)

Hi Jill! Thank you for watching :) Yarns all seem to vary greatly in their tightness of spin, number of ply, thickness, fragility etc. As such, I try not to treat yarns the same way. Whenever I start into a new project with a new kind of yarn, I always allow for a learning period. I work up a little sampler with the new yarn (and hook, if it's a size I don't typically use). You have to allow your fingers to get used to the new sizes, textures and weight :) After a little sampling or experimentation, I usually feel better equipped to get into my project :) I hope that helps!

+caitlin in stiches crochet Hi Caitlin! (how's it going on the other side of the big pond?!) Yes, you sure can! In fact, you can crochet with long 'threads' of ANYTHING. Strips of fabric, hemp string, embroidery floss, plastic bags, t-shirts...sort of makes your brain explode with possibilities, doesn't it?! Plastic 'yarn' can be pretty tough, so if you're going to give it a whirl, try something like a small basket. The added cool factor of plastic yarn is that it's water proof...so you can use it for stuff outside!

Hi Jane, nylon yarn is good for slippers and rugs and anything that takes a lot of wear and tear! I would treat it like acrylic though, because it can melt if it comes into contact with too much heat!

@jaydainstitches great info. I would only add that if your vegan any wool, angora, alpaca and silk aren't vegan. As far as a "haircut", it's not that pretty in the majority of sheep farms. Most of the men shearing are not trained and cut off odd parts and sew wounds they create without anesthesia. Animal cruelty is happening everyday all day. #govegan Choose bamboo, cotton or arcylic. #bekind

I too thought wool was collected by responsible people but sadly it seems our planet is full of people lacking a whole lot of responsibility and humanity.
