Another Tip for newbies: Don’t let anyone tell you how to hold your hook. Whether you hold it like a knife (like I do), or like a pencil (which slows me down, lol), it doesn’t matter, whatever makes you feel comfortable! Lol! Happy Hooking! Thanks for sharing. My favorite yarns are Bernet Baby yarn, Red Heart (everything), and Caron Cakes (all of them)

I agree. Don’t use dark colors when making video tutorial. I’ve seen beginner’s crochet tutorials where the person teaching uses a dark yarn or granny square and you can’t see where they’re stitching.

My tips for newbies would be: Make an infinity scarf. Learn the basic stitches and repeat them over and over again. Use a large hook (easier to hold) and use a bulky yarn in one lighter color (easier to see). My last suggestion is -- Don't be afraid to make mistakes. You will make them -- it's inevitable. You will only learn if you make mistakes :) Learn to look at your work. Notice the thickness of the yarn ... notice the hook size being used ... notice the tension of the stitches ... compare what your work looks like to the one pictured in the instruction. Have a sense of humor! ~ I remember one of my first projects was a cowl. I showed my husbad my handy work. His reply was "Oh, that's ... cute" (men never say "cute" unless they are at a loss for appropriate adjectives :) I showed him the picture of what it was supposed to look like and we both burst out in laughter. Practice practice practice. Have a friend sit by you and offer to pause the video for you (it's hard to do when your hands are pre-occupied) OR put your laptop on the floor and use your toes to pause the video (space bar) ... I have done that a lot! Did I mention having a sense of humor?

As a beginner, the comment section is filled with words I'm yet to understand haha! But so far, the easiest thing I've found to use is cotton yarn. I find it a little firmer so it holds its shape a bit better while I'm learning.
@chantelm9255

I agree! I tried using standard, worsted, 4-ply acrylic and couldn't get my hook through in the places it was supposed to go through. When I tried with cotton, it worked much better. I think the lower elasticity of the cotton helped because that meant my stitches didn't collapse as much.

Crochet with a group that does charity work! You will make new friends, have people nearby to encourage and help, plus there is always someone with some leftovers in their stash bag that you can probably learn on. Pet blankets are quick and if you’ve made a mistake the cat or dog is not going to tell anyone! Get out there and have fun
@michekids

I tried that and most all the women just wanted to chat with each other and boast on their projects. I was encouraged nonetheless because of all the patterns, colors and textures, but I am not easily discouraged and I found some good, thorough teachers on utube and when my time comes, I hope that as I show off my treasure crafts, that I remember how it felt to be ignored and I do a better job of reaching out.

I tell people who want to learn to use a basic yarn... but I do suggest they pick a rainbow style yarn. Doing this really helped me see my stitches so much more clearly when I was learning to count them. I love Bernat blanket yarn but if you are still getting used to your tension, it is easy to pull to tight since its a chenille style yarn. For brand new beginners I usually suggest they stay away from some of the more chunky yarns that are basically two strands twisted together to make the bulk (Michael's loops and threads charisma is an example). These yarns have a tendency to split and can be confusing if you are still learning what you are looking at.

I’m a newbie and I made my first beanie yesterday!!!! I started with 11.5 mm yarn that’s made for blankets and it was sooo easy for me to use. I think since it’s thicker it was easier for me to get the hang of things. I’m definitely still learning the basics especially because I didn’t know I was making a beanie until I realized I made a circle and kept going lol but all these tips are sooo good I’ll definitely be screen shooting!!!

My first crochet project was a queen sized blanket, using 4 different colors, but all 4 ply weight, and an "I" 5.5 hook. It came out perfectly. Used the "granny cluster stitch". It came out straight and beautiful. It was a gift for my grandson & his new wife. I am now on my second project. I have been using "Red Heart" yarn since the beginning, but find that I have to be careful, since the yarn tries to "split" as you turn your project. With my current queen sized blanket, my edges keep widening, then back to normal. I unraveled the entire thing, and started over. I am using a cluster stitch with alternating double crochet stitches, and a treble stitch at alternating ends. It is stunning, but the ends look scalloped. Which can be nice, IF I was wanting that...lol. I am going to fix the ends, after I am done. My grandma used to "straighten" her ends by sewing a satin edging, then crocheting on top of the satin, to hide the ends imperfections. Her blankets always looked professional. I just know, that I will NEVER combine different types of stitches, again. That makes it truly difficult to maintain a straight edge. Live & learn....lol

Oh, wow. You're SUPER close to me. I get a lot of my yarn from the Joann store just off Golden Valley Rd. I'm loving the tips I'm finding here. I second the one about starting off with light-colored yarns for practice. If you're having trouble figuring something out, search for videos on the topic. Different KZbin channels often show the same concepts, but with the camera at different distances from the yarn, or with different ways of highlighting information. I didn't understand how to "work into the back humps of the chain" to start off the blanket I'm currently making -- but then I looked it up online, found a different video that very clearly showed what that meant, and now I'm making tremendous progress. Unrelated - but stitch markers are a super-nifty little gadgets.

Amazing hack: for textured yarn (a nightmare for even seasoned crocheters) add a regular worsted yarn (best color match) to it. You can see your stitches! Ty for the video…I agree with you. I HATE fine yarn mostly because it takes forever to progress through your project. Also using the right hook is so important.

My favourite yarn (available in the UK and US) is called ‘King Cole cherished DK’, there’s a unique selection of muted rather than pastel colours and it’s so easy to work with, it slides so easily and glides through tighter stitches like if you were doing a wave stitch and alternating between hdc and sl sts. It helps speed up projects as it’s so glossy on your hook.

Tip: Hit the thrift stores to get started on building your thread & yarn collection. This is perfect for small projects. When the thrift stores get donations for yarn, they sometimes throw in surprises like crochet or knitting needles, markers and even embroidery floss which is great for more delicate projects. I can usually buy a bag of a variety of yarns for the price of one skein of yarn. I go to my local Salvation Army and can even get it for $.69 on Mondays!

This! Some people believe knitting, crocheting, and other fiber arts are hobbies with a big initial investment because they think you have to buy buy brand-new everything. If you don't know whether you'll like it, pick up some worsted-weight yarn and a 5mm (or so) crochet hook at a thrift store and just practice with it. You can graduate to the fancier, more expensive materials if you like, when you've decided the hobby suits you.

Personally, I don't recommend thrift store yarn for beginners. What I encountered is yarn without labels, so I was clueless about weights, care instructions, recommended hook sizes, and running out of yarn without knowing what kind to buy to finish projects. If all you're doing is samplers, go for it
@saklee1777

i think i’d only recommend this if the yarn is machine washable because i would think there’d be dust on the yarn. thats why ppl usually buy new skeins of yarn. its kinda dusty at the salvation army store i’ve been to. some thrift stores can be bad. theres a good will store ive been to and its so dusty i can practically breathe the dust in.

I know a lot of people say that Caron simply soft worsted weight yarn is too slippery for beginners to start crocheting with, but I found that it actually boosted my confidence when I made projects with it, because my results were so beautiful! Simply soft yarn has a nice satiny sheen to it, without being too shiny, and it's very soft- you do have to be careful that you have the right type of hook to crochet with it, because it will split, if your hook isn't compatible with the yarn but the results are stunning, nonetheless :)

I'm learning I do not like Red Heart Super Saver at all. Of the yarns I've used, Caron One Pound is awesome. The stitches are well-defined, and until I get better at my tension, it's stretchy enough to not look bad. Even the dark colors are easy to see. It's also fairly soft. As I build my stash, One Pound will be a big part of it.

red-heart I would suggest because it works well, is often textureless, and you don't need to live near a yarn store to get it, every wal-mart and mall I've seen has it, oh yeah and don't go with dark colours like dededexter mentioned.

I much prefer using and teaching crochet and knitting with natural yarns. Something smooth and worsted weight. A nice plied wool. Fisherman's Wool and Paton's Wool are a few box store wools. From Knit Picks I like Wool of the Andes or Swish (for machine washable choice). It also depends on the end project goal. For example, if my class attendees wanted to make wash cloths, I'd teach them on kitchen cotton, like Peaches and Creme. The benefits of using a natural yarn is that you can block your work after you are finished so that your end product looks like you want it to. That's been reassuring to my students who have struggled with getting perfectly straight edges.

You are so so lovely your smile is gorgeous and your voice is a pleasure to listen to. You make me smile. WHEN YOU SMILE THE WORLD SMILES WITH YOU. Please, do you have knitting videos too? Those were great tips, thanks! I can add when first starting out it’s best to make things like rags, baby blankets, “doggie” blankets. I’m a pet sitter so I’ve made toys and small blankets for dogs to lay on. They don’t care if it’s not perfect and believe me they love it! I have some clients that I only see a couple times a years and the dogs will dig out the toy or blanket and bring it to me as if to say thanks, I remember. 😊 Making those items helps you to get your count and to make sure you don’t add or take away stitches. It’s also a good way to try new stitches out. Believe me you will make things and think your doing wonderful until you hold it up and say oh crap! one end will be much wider or narrower. Don’t worry it’s all apart of learning to count. So count and count again. Learning on small square items helps to know what an empty or a crowded stitch looks like. Another tip always slow down at the end of a roll make sure you stitch the last stitch, make sure your hiding the 2nd color if your using multiple yarns, and make sure your not adding an extra stitch. If you can catch the mistake with only needing to take a roll out it’s so much easier then once you think your done and it’s a hot mess! To be honest my own dogs had a few of the hot mess blankets and they love them just the same. And if it’s dish rags your dishes don’t not mind either. 😊 Happy crocheting!

My very first granny squares were made with Rico Creative cotton DK yarn. The quality of the yarn was amazing: it did not split even though I undid and re-crochet the yarn over and over. The colour was between bright and dark green, which isn't too bad in daylight, but I decided that my next colour is going to be something lighter. The other thing I did was to make the chain for the first row, and sometimes even the first row, in larger hook size, because I find it difficult not to start my creation too tight. The second row it easier because by then I have something to hold onto.

I love sheepjes catona yarn. It feels nice, doesn’t fluff out and Frey like some yarn and you can see your stitches easily. I started with making stuffed toys so I was used to thinner yarn right off the bat; I find thinner yarn easier to work with in general. Anyway that’s my number one pick if you’re working with small projects

When I started to learn how to knit and crochet I started of with a 3 stand yarn and I didn't see any difference like I could see my stiches and stuff and plus I used a 8 us circluar needle and a H crochet hook and I love it.

I would also recommend a brighter color to start, like a light blue or red. I started crocheting with a dark navy, almost black yarn, and I had no clue where to put the hook. It was just too dark to tell the stitches apart :)

I know this video is old, but omg that first yarn is exactly what happened to me! It looks like the same brand too, which is homespun lionbrand. I really like it now, but oml... It was SUCH a pain to work with, especially since I was/still am making a big blanket. But, if you are pretty determined, after the first couple of rows, it gets pretty easy. For me, I went from one row taking an hour, to a row in 10 minutes and I am still pretty slow. Don't get stuck with just visualizing it, you can often feel along thick and dark yarn for where your next stick will be.

I am a beginner, have made a couple of afghans in the past; however they were years ago. I consider myself to be a beginner. I made the mistake of trying to use a 20% Alpaca Wool and 80% Acrylic. Plus it was multi-colored, dark blues, dark grays, charcoal. It was so hard to see my stitches. I had to pull it out and it was so tangled with the fuzzy threads that are from the wool.

my grandmother taught me the basics when I was about 10. And shortly there after I neglected the art. when I decided that I wanted to attempt crochet as a 30 year old adult, I picked up a clearance Granny square kit in the kids activity center at books-a-million. And I was shocked at how easily it all came back to me. The kit included a lightweight cotton yarn. I didn't find it difficult to use at all but maybe that's because my original experience was with a standard worsted weight yarn. granny squares are a good way to start because you learn a couple of different stitches as well as basic techniques such as color change and even joining your work... But most importantly, you can see a finished project relatively quickly!

Another thing that helps with textured yarn is to combine it with another yarn or even with itself. I got some Lion Brand Terryspun and my first time trying to use it was a nightmare. So I looked it up on line and someone suggested combining it with another yarn or using a double strand of it and it made all the difference in the world.

I am new at crochet i bought worsted i do like it but didnt want to spend much if i got frustrated and quite. I have one hook, 5 colors of yarn. But loving it. I made grand baby sleepers, sandles, and a Easter bunny basket. And just finished slippers. for my mom today. Though i have a lot to learn, it has been fun. Also for my mom's slippers i doubled the yarn. And they are thicker, and cute. Also i like this yarn also because you can see your work, and easier to see what your doing wrong. But like me i tend to make my stiches tighter, trying to loosen the grip, but if you keep pulling out it tends to loosen fibers and then harder to see work and doesnt look as sharp. But honestly a newbie it might look ok but it won't be flawless. But thats learning. But not giving up plan on being good enough in a few months to at least make something without pulling it all out to start again. Thank you for your thoughts. Have a great day. Oh ya really thin stuff, if your new don't mess wth it it is to hard to hang on tooo. oh ya i did 5 stiches magic circle. Ughhh needless to say i will have that yarn awhile. Lol

Melanie Thank you again. One thing I have found and have been told is to stay away from dark yarn because you tend not to be able to see your stitches as well with dark colored yarn. I still have trouble with it. If you have any tips for working with this yarn I would appreciate it. Also, I still cannot figure our how to substitute yarn. I still am not sure what weight DK yarn is. I try to figure it out in the store. Have you noticed that some yarn labels do not tell you what weight they are? So if you have tips for this I would really appreciate it. Thank you again

Recommend cheaper worsted weight yarn for beginners, all beginner projects don't end up quite the right gauge as crocheter is learning to adjust tension. My first projects were either to tight or to loose, so save money for better yarn after gaining more experience.
