What it's ACTUALLY like to live in Spartanburg, South Carolina

I get a lot of questions about Spartanburg, South Carolina: Is it safe? What's the crime rate like? What about the culture? Is there anything to do? One of Spartanburg’s oldest neighborhoods, Converse Heights, has a storied history. Residents have included mayors, doctors, college professors, former governor/US Senator, President of USC Donald Russell; former governor, US Supreme Court Justice, US Secretary of State James F. Byrnes; domestic policy adviser to President Reagan, Kenneth Cribb, textile magnate, Roger Milliken, who oversaw construction of the GSP airport and for whom the airfield at the airport is named; the founder of WSPA TV/ radio; the brother of famous Asheville writer, Thomas Wolfe; a woman who married the owner of the Russian Tea Room in NYC and ran it after his death, a former director of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and a 16 year old boy who saved Spartanburg’s train station from being torn down after a fire.

Do you have any videos where you drive around Spartanburg neighborhoods? I looked but I didn’t see any. I loved the drive you did through Greenville neighborhoods. I’m flying out in Aug to see which area I would like, I’m torn between Greenville and Spartanburg.

Internet crime statistics are not always accurate. A recent post on News Break stated that burglary was the most common crime in Spartanburg, which is not true. The most common crime in Spartanburg is larceny, primarily shoplifting. The city once sued Neighborhood Scout for publishing crime statistics for the city based on data drawn from a larger area than the city. Spartanburg has an expanding network of walking/biking trails. Last year one of the trails was extended through the downtown area with the first curb protected bike lanes in the state. Another one was extended to site of a former grist mill with a dam and waterfall located 5 minutes from the downtown area. Besides the baseball stadium, a planetarium is under construction at downtown public library headquarters , only the 2nd planetarium at a library in the US. Ground has just been broken on a first in the state nature preserve and park completely designed for people with special needs at Lake Blalock just north of the city and plans have been announced for a 945 acre nature preserve and park on the southeastern outskirts of the city. Spartanburg is home to 7 colleges and universities as well as the S.C. School for the Deaf and Blind.
