I can't believe parents of deaf children don't learn the language, when I sit here, in a different countyy, in a tiny village with no deaf people nerby, trying to remember and repeat as many signs as possible from your videos, just so I don't need to look at the subtitles so much. (i also watch some youtubers signing in my language, but I just found a lot of Deaf/hoh British content creators I enjoy)

Apparently alot of the old school parents ie my parents generation didn't learn Auslan (Australian dignity language) or any form of sign language. I have a friend who is deaf his parents didn't learn but he is very verbal and quite clear too. He can also sign.

It's brilliant that you all can sign. I looked after a deaf child in the school that I work in. He is now 7 and unable to talk or sign. His family wouldn't learn to sign because they think he will talk. I paid for a level 3 bsl course to support him the best I could before he went to a deaf unit with level 1 and 2 Teachers which is not enough! Its child abuse to fail your child like that and know that he can not tell you about his day at school because his mum and dad can't sign and couldn't understand what he was signing. You are an amazing family and I love watching your videos, I hope I never forget how to sign!

It was great to see your Dad talk about the importance of learning BSL to communicate with you at a young age. Clear communication is so important between deaf and hearing and BSL can make a huge difference. I am hearing and my wife is profoundly deaf, a BSL user. Our relationship became stronger when i started signing. When your Dad described your confidence, that reminded me of my wife. You are an inspiring young lady. Thanks for sharing 👌😁

I did not know so many hearing parents don’t learn sign language!! I was deaf as a baby too but as I got older it improved and I’m now hard of hearing. I was so lucky, my parents learned level 1 bsl for me and also taught me! Thanks to that my English language skills improved in about 3 months! (I think, it was pretty quick anyway!) It was lovely meeting your dad, his signing is really good! xx

I am 60! I was born Deaf and I was in Bombay, India. Both my parents decided to moves to London so Mum learned how to help me with my speech and I used to wear huge headphone 🎧 and learn to speak. Now my mum is 87. She never used BSL which was sad but that was in the 1960s so jazzy is young and probably be born in 1998? So that time, it was the start of deaf awareness maybe? Or maybe not. God bless! I am grateful for what my mum did for me. I am amazing at lip reading, I can speak, I can use BSL/SSE. I was in the Scottish Parliament when the BSL Act 2015 passed!

As a dad I can totally understand how he would worry for your future. I have a daughter whose hearing but I still worry about her. She’s 26 now. Since learning sign language I have learnt that being deaf doesn’t have to mean you don’t enjoy life. Well done dad and mum for learning to sign.

Thank you for sharing your story. I was born deaf and attended many hearing test around 6 months old to 12months old until the last one they were pretty serious and decided to referral to my ENT specialist. My parents decided for me to have my cochlear implant in 2003 after my third birthday. It was a big surgery which i do agree with you. I have a big scar compared to 2011 when i had my second one done. I did not learn how to use the sign language and i tend to use the gesture before i can speak when i had my first switch on for the first time. It took me many years to be able to speak fully. You are amazing Jazzy!

I absolutely love your videos, they are so inspirational. I am also called jasmine and speak french and english. I worked for an interpreting firm for 6 yrs where we managed projects for the nhs and police and one of the languages was bsl. However, I only recently became inspired to learn it when i came across a link for it in an adult social care course im doing and also saw an eposode of 90 days fiance where one of the guy's on it is hearing impaired. ❤❤❤

It's honestly so lovely to see how supportive your family are and how everyone has learned to sign, despite worries there may have been at the start etc. It's just so nice and refreshing to see because the few deaf people I've met haven't really had that and it's heartbreaking.

Let the hearing gene be D(dominant) and the deaf gene be d (recessive) If Mom has Dd and Dad has Dd , The four options are DD(completely hearing gene) , dd(completely deaf gene) and two Dd genes (hearing but carries deaf gene) This is what causes genetic deafness So Jasmine got dd and Holly got DD or Dd(she has a higher chance of carrying a deaf gene)

For those not following the genetics the percentages would be DD 25 percent, dd 25 percent and Dd 50 percentage for odds.

As a father of 4 amazing hearing children, I've got to say this video was very informational and very touching, I loved the background stories, the pictures and videos were 100% vintage, the immersion was so strong I was wanting more lol.....Also my favorite part was knowing that you were at times using BSL for mischievous purposes lol, all around an awesome much needed video! Ahhhh. I also cried because I was too overwhelmed when we had my BAHA switch on. It was too loud for me too so we asked them to turn it down...... and I can hear out of one ear! I can’t imagine what it must be like going straight from no sound to all sound, I went from about half sound to all sound and even just THAT was too much at once. After watching next part of vid: The thing that got me when I first used my hearing out in the big wide world was at school the sound of the teachers laptop whirring at the front of the classroom. I remember staying behind for a moment at the start of lunch and asking her what the sound was because I was worried that my hearing was making it and it was broken! When she told me I said ‘wow, that’s amazing’ and she said ‘it won’t take you long to find it very annoying’.......she was right!

My sister ( born late 1970s) started speaking soon after speech therapy came at 18 months, so then she was never introduced to sign language. I think my parents thought or they were advised to avoid it for better integration into society. She is also profound deaf but was mainstreamed. She did extremely well, best of her class, just with lipreading accommodations. I can see it could be a risky strategy but worked well in the end.

This video is fantastic, well done. Having one deaf child and learning BSL sign ourselves this is very inspiring. We don't know whether she will choose signing or verbal as her preference but we are keen to keep both directions open. I would love to know what school arrangements were in place for you and whether you would do anything differently based on that experience. Keep the videos coming, really enjoy them. Please say well done to dad, he has clearly learnt BSL to a great level.

I feel same to you jazzy, I was born hearing different way of sick and doctor give me medication make me deaf then got better also then my parent do same thing to me and bought lady to teaching me and my parent how learn sign of Australia auslan also I didn’t sign til I was 10 which I always talking like normal hearing I have cochlear since I was 2 years old.. when I was kid I used some sign as I ask my ex deaf teacher teach me more much i wanna help other deaf and do interpreter both way all my life all i do is speaking, lip reading, full sign and can hear.. now the music I can everything of music like normal hearing as other my friends some of them is different want hear and feel vibrant some of them don’t like wear them took it off they just want feel normal deaf vibrant. Some part in Australia most of family generation deaf lot of sign and lots of hearing do sign too as they do wanna learn and being support them for interpreter for making appointment do both way. Knowing in Australia make in group of Facebook knowing new welcome knowing other world and used call deaf social club go out catch up meet new people in Australia states join in Nsw

I love Jazzy' s videos! I'm from and live in New Zealand and I know a bit of New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) but I have two cochlear implants and I really enjoy watching Jazzy's videos to get a new/different perspective of what it's like to be deaf since I don't know any deaf people in my real life :( But Jazzy is absolutely right, I LOVE listening to music with my cochlear implants and almost wouldn't be able to live without it, even though I do love my silence as well :) This was a very cool video.

It's wonderful video of you and your affable father and it's fantastic that you share it with us, thank you. A million of deaf people has distinct hearing abilities and especially the importance of communication skills including sign languages. Your father mentioned about Connenix 26 and I never heard it before. I was born in 80's and am only the one that I am profoundly deaf. I am unsure if I had Connenix because my hearing parents didn't know how to speak english. There were no digital technologies in the old days and it was difficult time for me. I learned the consist of sentences and words from a few hearing friends when I was young in all three non-deaf schools, it was quite pretty lonely. I never had any speech therapy sessions. Phonology methods (phonics letter sounds) is extremely helpful and it does help me to recognise all range of sounds and how to pronounce the words. It could be hard at first and take a while but a self pronunciation will eventually become easy. I can able to speak and listen adequately (I still have the problems with silent letters). I understand why all parents are cogitating on their children's life in the future. Stay safe and see you in next video.

I LOVE THIS VIDEO - I’m in the EXACTLY shoes as you!!!! Ofc little different experiences- I was born hearing (and I’m oldest) - that was fact because my mom play piano whole time and I responded when I was born anyway I became deaf about 6 months old (unknown causes - suspected with some kind of genetic) and was diagnosed deaf at 1 and half years old - my parents ofc was shocked and upset - cried and all but just right after the doctor meeting they went straight to bookstore and brought asl book then when got home I was pointing something at the kitchen cabinet they frantically got the book and picked me up and I got a can of peaches so they looked up how to sign peach and taught me - thus my first sign word was “PEACH” lol and they all learned asl and went to local community college and took classes and I have younger hearing sister also signed before she speak! My mom and my sister currently work as an asl interpreter! I never really wanted cochlear implants and told my parents that I wanted to stop wearing hearing aids when I was about 11 years old I knew I’m stone 100% deaf - never hear any sounds and I was happy with who I am! Oh also my parents LOVE music - my dad sings and my mom play piano so they also was sad but they all knew that I can still feel the vibration and I always love to feel the piano when my mom plays! So that’s SO MUCH similar as your experience! So sad that many hearing parents don’t bother to learn new language and we both are blessed!!! True! She's correct about the bond with family who sign. I bond with my mom the strongest communicating with her in ASL. However, my dad only could fingerspell and we communicated via paper/pen and sometimes body language.

It blows my mind that some parents don't learn to sign. Just can't wrap my head around willingly making your child feel othered rather than included and embraced. Also don't know why BSL isn't offered as standard at school alongside French, German, and Spanish. Such a simple thing that could make such a huge difference.

My partner is deaf I learned sign language as I wouldn’t hate to not communicate effectively with her. Everyone should learn it’s fun as well and even if you don’t know anyone who’s deaf it’s a good skill to have anyway and could be used in situations that require you to be quiet etc.

I went deaf at age 3yrs and took a hearing test around aged 6-7 yrs, I think. Fully deaf in the left ear and some hearing in the right ear enough to use a hearing aid.

I agree parents learn BSL for Deaf children much closer than parents don't learn BSL. My parents didn't learn BSL and they expected me do hard work learn speech instead. I am not close to them and can't really say how I feel etc since I never do that with them. Sad but that how it is. I remember feel bit jealous Deaf children growing up with parents can sign and wish I have same.
