Freshman year in college I was behind a senior. He stopped being able to handle the pitching staff, called horrible games (I’m old, coaches didn’t call pitches then.) So I found myself starting over a guy that EVERYONE loved, including me. Things were fine at first. Then I went 0 for 8…. Games. 0-34 appearances. No hits, no walks, nothing. Then for game 9 I was about to beg for a day off. Walked to the plate with bases loaded and fans were giving me the business. It was a small college so not a ton of fans but it felt like Yankee stadium was on my back. Then I sent a laser down the line for a 3 run double. Next at bat the still booed and I planted one about 70 miles over the left field fence. Boos seemed to get louder when I got to home. Was a little confused. The next time up the boos were more intense. Everyone on their feet just giving me hell. At first I felt angry. Then it hit me, fans figured out that booing was the slump buster. Got booed every time I came to the plate for the rest of the year. Never booed before or after but it turned into something fun for the last 1/3 or so of that season.

The "fans" that are booing likely may have never batted against a 95+ mph 2 seamer with tail, or a curve that falls off the table, or a changeup that males you look silly, etc. The players of today spend their entire off season trying to keep their job because the next wave of players is coming with trmendous potential.

I think when fans see .173 BA and then the player's smiling face like he's happy with how he's playing, it kinda pisses them off. Maybe the players should have a few different pictures which corresponds with their on field production. Good average = happy picture. Bad average = sad picture. Maybe just put a pile of sh** emoji instead of a picture on the scoreboard.

I would never boo or complain about a young player trying just to make it in the majors. But a player like Lindor who signed a contract that guaranteed for 10yrs at over 340 million may be different story. He negotiated a contract that told everyone how good he may be. I don't believe he would give some of that money back when performing poorly. So he is going to hear it from the Mets fans. Live with it and keep cashing those checks.

I think the hardest ones for me are when you see a guy with a big contract that doesn't put in a reasonable effort like running out a ground ball. To me, that is very boo worthy. Saw that a few times while watching a game yesterday and just couldn't believe it. How does the manager allow that to go on again and again? I don't care who the guy is, it sets a bad example, a huge negative for the team, and says a lot. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

Matt, as a fan, it's more frustrating with someone like Baez, who has drawn a grand total of 18 walks this year. This is a mental (not physical) change one can make in order to get better. There is little question that by becoming even marginally selective, he could get on base (via walks) more, AND get better pitches to hit. If I were pitching I would NEVER throw that guy a strike. To refuse to make that change (being more selective) is to willfully refuse to get better. He is literally, not trying to be the best player he can be. To me, this is worthy of booing.

So sick of hearing booing isnt going to get the player to perform better. Who said they are trying to get them to perform better? Damn if their multimillion dollar contracts aren't incentive enough a boo ain't gonna do shit. Its the fans saying, we have had enough. This team was supposed to be a championship caliber team going into the season. Very good lineup, great pitching... They acquired Lindor, McCann, Carassco and more prior to the season. Don't say injuries, everyone's got them, they're part of the game. I am a Mets fan over 40 years and this club, the 2021 team is the most underachieving club in memory. I don't boo, they arent even worth standing up for. But for those paying ridiculous amount of money to go to their games in NY, want to express their displeasure they have every right! Damn if I, and I imagine most, were doing our jobs poorly we would be fired not preparing to sign next multimillion dollar contract.

As a native New Yorker and a life long Mets fans I can tell you that Mets fans and Yankee fans are on another level of when it comes to being inpatient, obnoxious and fair weather. I think this attitude is definitely going to hurt the Mets in free agency. quality MLB players will think twice about signing with a fan base like the Mets. Sure Baez strikes out a lot but he also has an above average OPS and over 25 homeruns. He’s hitting better than most of team. I don’t remember Baez having a problem like this in Chicago which is another big market.
@LI2Chesapeake3 жыл бұрын
Baez is an immature cancer. I knew that as a baseball fan prior to the Meta acquiring him. I didnt need to see this but I even read comments from Cubs fans saying such and saying what I knew to be true, " He's talented but he's not worth the cancer he stirs in the clubhouse, on the field.. A chemistry destroyer." Well we acquired him so I hoped for the best but it didnt take 2 months for him to show his true colors. He wanted to play with his friend, Lindor well if the Mets sign him this offseason they're crazy. Lindor is a clown, but we are stuck with his antics and lies (story about rat heading towards the clubhouse covering his ass for fighting with Squirrel then saying this thumbs down wasn't aimed towards the fans) He's so full of shit but we are stuck with that crap for 10 yrs, show Baez the door. The two of them are hitting less than .225. SMDH..

Players should show up at fans workplace and boo them while they try to do their job. I fail to see understand how how fans feel justified to mock players when they don't match their expectations. Players just have to ignore it. That being said, booing is worse in New York City than most places.

I think there is something to the idea most boos are for the poor play and not for the player. We holler at our kids when they mess up, but we still love and value them. Poor play is unacceptable at all levels, but in professional sports, excellent play is and should be demanded. Now, these Mets players in question are being booed as individuals now, for having the inability to compartmentalize the negative attention and acting like spoiled brats. Some fan bases are a little more passionate than others. I would argue a degree of classlessness is present in NY and Boston among others. But all fans deserve to get the best out of their players. Again, most of the booing that goes on in my opinion is for the lousy playing by the player. But the players attitude and continued poor play can change the dynamic to the actual player being booed out of the stadium (figuratively of course).,

@@AntonelliBaseball I know replying 2 years after a video is made will probably go unnoticed. However, I'm not sure if the thumbs down the Mets players were giving was towards the fans. The thumbs down thing here in New York started in 2017. Because of a hurricane in Florida, a Yankees/Rays game was played at Citifield as opposed to in Tampa. Todd Frazier hit a home run, and while circling the base the camera panned to some fan dressed like he's in Pepperidge farm commercial, stood up and gave a thumbs down....from there anytime a Yankee got a hit, they would thumbs down each other when they got on base. I'm not sure if that trend would carry on years later to the Mets players, but that was it's origins....I'll attach the article...not sure if you remember this or not.... www.mlb.com/cut4/todd-frazier-and-thumbs-down-mets-fan-finally-meet-c265073690

Makes sense to boo the opposition but if you think the players of your home team are trying their best it makes no sense to do that instead of encouraging them. Some people just like to kick you while you’re down and kiss up to you when you’re winning. Real supporters remain loyal through thick and thin as long as they feel everybody’s giving their absolute best and it might just be a cold spell.

Sadly, one of those players is the one the Mets signed a MASSIVE deal with over the next ten years. Also in baseball with guaranteed contracts, cutting a player is not a punishment; it is a reward. What that would mean is the player becomes an instant free agent, free to sign with any other team. The Mets would then be on the hook to continue paying the player the life of their contract AND the team that signed him would be paying him salary from his new contract.
