The runner has a right to the bag. He didn't interfere with an infielder's chance to make a play because they were too far away. The umpire should not have stopped the play because the ball was still live. However, once he stopped it, the best thing to do is create a rule to achieve fairness. Call a do-over and reestablish the conditions in effect before the pitch. (I called ball for 21 years and something like this happened in a game I called. My base umpire stopped play because he was hit by a batted ball. I corrected his mistake with a simple do-over. Both teams were happy. (By rule, umpires are considered to be a part of the field.)

So my question would be: does the infield fly call preclude the fielder from throwing out a runner after catching the fly? Because if the runner can't get back to the bag due to possible interference and gets thrown out because of it, this rule is highly retarded. You might as well ban runners from advancing on all flyballs.

Like to see child like passion for the game. Players who love the game are always giving it 100% because is there anything better than playing baseball? There is. But when I was young (under 45, lol) and on the diamond I was like a kid in heaven all over again. Mean there are a lot things to be passionate about, family, building guitars, reading books, astronomy. But when I was on the diamond it was all about giving a 100% and respecting the game. Trying my best. Eventually I progressed to better teams and started winning championships, but it was definitely a 20 years journey to there.

Right fielder should definitely be coming in to back up a potential throw to second and Rizzo is not doing anything useful. He should be staying on first in case a throw comes there. Wandering into middle of infield helps no one.

The reason this is such a rare occurrence is that the runner should have been running. It's a mystery why he stood there firmly planted on the bag, on a grounder up the middle.

#5 - players who step on the pitcher's mound might end up disrupting the hole in which a pitcher's front foot lands upon delivery of the pitch. It throws pitchers out of their rhythm.

Wow. As a youth select coach I am always trying to educate myself on the best coaching techniques. This has to be the best single infielding video on YT. My dream is to have my sons join Antonelli baseball training at some point in the future as I'm limited in my knowledge base. If I had this type of coaching in my youth, sky was the limit. Unfortunately, not a single coach EVER taught me anything like this. I had to rely on pure God gifted talent and that wasn't enough...

I pitched from little league to highschool and at age 13 I played travel baseball for coaches that played pro or college. Now where I'm from for some reason sports is not important and it wasn't until I started playing travel baseball until I found out how important it is to some and how important it is to others. But travel baseball is where I started to take things more seriously and I think playing travel baseball made me a better baseball player. By playing travel baseball it allowed me to make my highschool team and if I didn't screw it up I might have had a chance in making it at the pro level. Now if you play other sports other than baseball then that's fine because I played with some in highschool that played other sports when conditioning started for baseball. But for you young players who are serious about playing highschool and at the next level then now it's when you take it seriously. I mean just because the season is over it doesn't mean that you stop hitting, fielding, or working on things that you struggled with during the season. This is how you get better is by doing off-season workouts. Because when you get to highschool nothing is given to you and you have to earn your spot on the highschool team and I never made it to the next level but I'm pretty sure that it's the same way as it is in highschool. I'm in my late 40's now but everything that the pro's do in the major leagues is taught at the youth level. So it doesn't matter whose playing I can remember all the things that MLB players are doing because it was taught to me during my youth years

If the pitcher had touched it he would have been safe... but the pitcher technically isn't part of the infield right? But if the pitcher made a play on the ball but didn't touch it would the base runner still be out?

One thing that I think Matt does not cover clearly: The runner is not out if it passes a fielder (and no other fielder has an opportunity) AND “it touches the runner immediately behind the fielder.” So the fact the the infield is in might not matter. It matters if it passes IN THE VICINITY of a fielder and then touches the runner IMMEDIATELY BEHIND him. Other than that, runner is out for being touched by a batted ball-even if technically past the fielders. This exception was mentioned: If touched by an infield fly while in contact with a base, ball is dead but only batter is out. Another exception would be if the ball was first touched by another fielder (including the pitcher, in this case).
