At 60, Jo Lynn Decker found herself trapped in a failing marriage and cramped apartment in Idaho. Inspired by KZbin videos of senior nomads, she left it all behind to live out of a van and start a radical new chapter of her life. Filmmakers Vanessa Carr and Josh Gleason went along for the ride.

I'm 62, and I've lived in my vehicle off and on for 18 years. Meeting people is the most rewarding part for me. Helping people is also rewarding. I spent 765 dollars yesterday helping a fellow nomad and his wife buy groceries, gas for their RV, and gas for their generator. In my apartment, I could never afford to do that. So now that I don't pay rent,, I help people, and I find that helping others as a nomad has made the road more like home to me.

The nomadic lifestyle actually makes you physically and mentally stronger - it constantly builds your life skills. The caravan and connecting w/other nomads, especially those your age, is safer and more fun.

Great video. I actually cried at 63 years old. Lol On August 15, 2020 I started as a nomad in my 2014 Toyota RAV4. It was a choice and something I have been planning the last 3 years. It has given me low debt and remote income on the road.

Thats really encouraging! So how do u like living out of your Rav 4? They should have done a story on you. As I sit here caring for my rapidly failing husband, I am packing my stuff to store, and trying to decide on a vehicle. I would love more success stories. I have watched all the youtubers, and even emailed them. A van is too high to get into and a mini van cant tow what i need. Thinking on a Dodge Durango.

I had done my share of car camping, backpacking, and sleeping in cars over the years being an avid hiker. Getting to destination was fun but the living in my suv got tedious fast because I had to be super organized in such a small place. I spent the last 5 years contemplating and planning for van life but decided not to do it full time or to get a cargo van to convert. I’d continue to drive to places when I desire a getaway but I’d always have my home base to come back to (and indoor plumbing).

Bob Wells strongly recommends a cargo van. That's what I'm going to shoot for. I like the idea of how much money I could save on rent. It will help me build up a better rainy day fund.

Never thought when I read Steinbeck's Travels with Charley in my youth I would be chomping at the bit to do the same in my 60's. There is peace, solitude, and enrichment for your soul away from the false trappings of our societal norms.

In reality all we did was sacrifice precious moments we can never get back while we made someone else rich. They travel and live life to the fullest while we labor away and settle for their scraps.

I have been following many Nomads for the past 4 years, including Bob Wells. I am 65 right now. Planning to be on the road in 18 months the longest. I want a travel trailer, to be off grid, NOT going to use the toilet plumbing, going to 'wrap up' the feces, buying a water filter so I can use water from creeks and rivers and store in 5 gal jugs, going solar and a wind turbine, a small pellet burning stove for heat; just a few examples. I plan to hook up with a "Tribe" to learn the ropes and start meeting my 2nd 'family' and friends.

I really don't understand the complaints about lack of healthcare, in the USA, for elderly. There is coverage. You have to register for it, but there is coverage. Get an advocate, (many Dr office have them there, in person, once a month). or help from someone younger, who can help you use the website. Low income, and over certain age, all get coverage.

You most certainly can do it. Remind yourself if you don't do what you want to do the people who tell you that you can't are the ones who win. It's YOUR decision. Take responsibility for your decisions. If you stay it's your decision. If you go it's your decision. You can be free, or you can be a doormat. What's the worst that can happen? Will you be even more miserable than you are now? Not likely.

As a former smoker I can tell you the least helpful and most motivation sapping thing is to make such suggestions. When a person is ready to quit, they will appreciate help...suggesting a walk, movie, coffee in a book shop with them. Also, don’t judge if they aren’t quite able to stop - it takes many tries before success for some people. Be loving and accepting.

I'm 61 fighting colon cancer out here. I had to change absolutely everything. I juice a gallon a day and make my own cannabis oil. No sugar or processed food. I can't imagine dealing with anymore health issues. Best to take care of yourself Seniors. Protect your mind. Pharmaceutical drugs are destroying us. 😢

My friend Gator sold everything, and bought a 200K RV and was sick of the road, RV parks the bugs and sold the RV for 120K and moved back into a condo in S. Florida with one of his lady friends. He is sad it didn't work out but seems pretty happy now

I have the plan of traveling around in a converted cargo van. I was In the process of getting ready when I had a multiple sclerosis flare, And I can’t drive anymore. And I can’t move very well. We had already planned on pulling a small trailer behind us so I could have my walker but now I’m in an electric wheelchair, And simply I am unable to do many things you need to do if you’re going to be living in a van. So we’ll travel, I will need to stay at places where there is power, as I need to charge my chair. It was a wonderful dream though, of living the nomad life. Luckily I still can afford my home base, But my heart is out there on the road. Hopefully, I’ll see you down the road!

I'm only 52 and have been watching countless videos over last two years ... money is always the issue because I am not old enough for even a small retirement check. So I am trying to figure out how to work from the road with bad knees, but it's killing me being trapped in town.

I'll offer another option....what I did, although when young, was to buy a dump of a house with friends. We lived in it and fixed it up as best we could. It was not what I would call enjoyable, but life isn't always perfect. The cost for me to get into that property was less than the price of a new van at the time (apples to apples). Over the first years all the other owners moved on and we took in renters. We sold the house as a rental property. With appreciation, the improvements we made, rent we had collected I got back my initial investment plus about 1/2 what a new van was selling for. I repeated this and eventually could buy homes on my own. I've saved a lifetime of rent and gained a lot on appreciation. It is hard work, not always pleasant. I've have moved several times to different states to buy what I could afford. Look closely at the cost of living in van. Many of these "nomads" have made poor financial decisions their entire life and this is just one more. Living in a van is extremely expensive. Yup, initially it looks cheap. A person buys a used van and hits the road...set for life. Then the van breaks down. Almost by definition you're probably going to be in the middle of nowhere so a huge towing fee. You're not going to be able to shop around, you'll have to pay whatever the closest repair shop charges. Or you buy another used van. No refrigeration so food costs increase and probably you eat more processed food which adds to health issues. You have to drive to new places to camp, gas isn't free. Lot's of propane. People look at nomadding as cheap because that's what they want it to be. Well living on the street is cheap. Vans and driving costs money. Some people do OK with a nomad life, but take a close look at them, they have some things in common...they're all pretty bright people, can figure things out, creative, healthy. That's their secret. But I see many videos like this one enticing people who don't have all these skills into the same lifestyle. "If I can do it you can too!" People don't like to face it but many people get into rough shape because of making poor choices their entire life. Van life will just be on more bad choice for many.

I have started making jewelry and t-shirts and am trying to make them sale worthy. I'm still too far away from retirement, but I'm working on it. Plus, I have 150lbs to lose. I'm sure you must have skills worth exchanging for some income. Think about it. I'm sure you can find that thing you would love doing despite the bad knees. Don't give up the dream!

Im an economic migrant, or my romantic title, 21st century nomad. I'm 69. I lived in London for 51 years, then I left in 2004. I have a small pension but its cheaper for me to travel around the world sleeping in dorms in hostels than it is to live in England. And the Quality of my life has improved immeasurably. 14 years in Asia, one year in South America and the last 15 months in Spain, Portugal and Berlin.

I cried for her when I saw the video. I almost feel the same way. I'm looking for a vehicle. I'm trying to plan. I'm past retirement age. This is what I want. I want something for myself. Yes, that woman has made a lifetime of bad lifestyle choices. That's why she looks like she does and also is constantly in and out of bad and unexpected life situations. Poor planning and an inability to anticipate simple things in life everyone else would know are coming is how many people like this end up where they are. And I'm almost her age so I speak with experience.

I think if they had avoided the cigarettes, I think they wouldn't have aged so terribly. I am 55 and when I saw them I was like "Yikes... is this going to be me in 5 years?" I exercise, don't smoke, don't drink and I feel like I am in my 30s.

I'm sure they don't feel as old as you are, either. It's a rare person who feels as old as they actually are. Or maybe you omitted the word "look" at the end of your post? Yes, congratulations, you look younger than the nomadic women shown. Clearly you've experienced less hardship in life than them, perhaps made better decisions, perhaps had opportunities they missed or never had. We all make choices, and we all are limited in some way or another by the long series of experiences, decisions, events, partners, family members, and friends that shape our lives. The most likely course for someone in her initial position, was to stay on the couch with the hubby who had given up on doing anything adventurous. Kudos to her for rejecting that and taking the more difficult path of heading out to build a life of her own.

I'm 68 and have a van I could live in but it's a Plan B for me if I were to lose my home. That's the only way I would ever live fulltime in a van and since I hate travelling I would never be a nomad but just stay in my hometown.
