Amazon has offered free two-day shipping for Prime members since 2005. As Amazon rolls out a one-day shipping guarantee for its 100 million Prime members, Amazon Flex drivers help solve the company's last mile problem. CNBC spoke to these on-demand contract workers all over the country to find out what it's really like to deliver for Amazon. Watch the video to hear about the pay, pace of work, and how Amazon Flex works.
Is Amazon Prime worth it? For many members, free shipping is a key Amazon Prime benefit that factors into their decision to pay $119 per year for the service. As Amazon starts offering Prime members the added benefit of one-day shipping they're working with on-demand contract drivers to help with this especially labor-intensive and expensive hand-delivery.
We spent a day with Omar Montes, a Flex driver in the San Francisco Bay Area. Omar helped a friend deliver around 46 packages in 3½ hours, for $105. “These are like the good days that make you want to continue doing Amazon. But, you know, there’s obviously bad days too,” Montes said.

And for the drivers it's obvious and it's shown in the video: Depends on where you live, and what you drive. Same as with uber/lyft. If you're a dork who gets off on owning a 60k$ BMW and tries to pay it of by driving uber in congested area's, you're gonna be sad. If you drive the most cost efficient ~5-10yr old car and find the best area's to drive, you're gonna be happy.

@voxkine9385
@voxkine9385 5 жыл бұрын
Wayne Fairley they get written up for not taking a given route they know they can’t handle. Even still, they may not know a route contains a bad road for their vehicle. Simple fixes, by Amazon, could eliminate this. Amazon doesn’t take into account that a person is driving a 2wheel drive Prius when it gives a route down a muddy slope, yet penalized people for not taking a route and still expects them to complete each route even if they can’t handle it. It’s not a literal gun to their head, just a legal and financial one. People who drive Uber/etc, don’t often do it for fun. They do it because they need cash bad and Amazon takes advantage of that by telling people in a car that isn’t up to par to go down a road their car can’t handle. Every driver I know for Uber is a person desperate to make rent AFTER their job, this is no different except it penalizes people for trying to use their common sense. Those packages aren’t delivered or refused? They get a write up.

That prob wasnt amazon, it was just a random person on the phone who works there. My old boss was the same way when I delivered pizza. A coworker got into a wreck and the first thing my boss asked him was did he finish his delivery? Later down the road that boss was transferred and we got a new manager. Someone got a flat tire and this manager dropped everything and left the store to go help that person. Its not the company.. Its management.

I had a 4 hour $72 shipment, and it took me 1.5 hours because of this.

actually may be quite the opposite. If the pay is fixed, you're got distance to deliver which hurts you. That's why having density is good. Sadly, Amazon doesn't have density as we can see in Los Angeles in this video compare to FedEx and FedEx is 1/3 the size of UPS in density.

I drove for flex. Don't do it. If you live in a city with lots of traffic it's almost impossible to finish routes. You delivering in ghetto areas is a big risk to you, especially at night. It's random routes and if they give you something that is 30-40 minute drive away, u can't say no or they write u up. Downtown routes are even worse cause u can't find parking and they expect you to pay for your own parking, f that. Amazon don't care for there workers. I talk to warehouse workers all the time and they say that it's not safe and everything is rushed. Crappy pay, crappy benefits and being overworked all the time. Those people are desperate to find a paying job so they let Amazon take advantage of them.

I think it depends on many factors. Like how much gas costs currently (it’s almost $2 down from last year), what your city layout looks like ( no tolls here in Kansas City) and traffic time isn’t half as bad as it is in LA or Tampa. Also take into account how much gas your car spends. For some people all of the factors are to their advantage and for others it doesn’t make them money. It all depends. Another thing is that many things are tax deductible, such as mileage, many car expenses, insurance, phone bill, etc.

I’m an Amazon DSP driver so I drive an actual van. My hours are also guaranteed. They only let you work four day weeks normally because they don’t want to pay so much overtime. During the peak season they do let you work five day weeks and that amounts to 5-10 hours of overtime a week. Even though they usually only let you work four days a week, it is a full time job. 35 hours or more is considered full time. I usually work between 35 and 40 hours a week. The one five day week I worked during the peak season I worked eight hours of overtime. After my previous job didn’t work out I did try applying for Flex but they didn’t have open positions in my area on Long Island in NY. But it’s probably better that I didn’t get a Flex gig because I can’t put so many miles on my car.

My two cents on delivering in Portland.1) 1st day-no help in warehouse. told them I was new. some packages not scanning well. wasn't sure what bar code to scan. felt rushed. left without my "paper". told them on the way out. no help. said I do not need it. 2) Packages were not marked as to deliver this 1st, 2nd according to route. could only see address and not familiar with city. Assigned a 3 hr block 5p to 8p. 3) started at 5p. left warehouse at 530p. took 30 mins to deliver 1st package. commute traffic was horrific. then multiple luxury apts that were closed and locked after 6p. customer not responding or name on apt list was missing. 4) map on flex app took me to different areas where the freeways were close together. lost 30 mins because of that. again, terrible traffic. Otherwise flex app was pretty good. 5) because I could not organize my packages I had to dig for every package. nightmare. late at night. no flashlight. 6) finally at 8p I was able to start delivering to houses or easy access apts but cutoff is about 930p and the app that I was using just disappeared as I was taking a picture of a drop off. 7) still had 4 packages to deliver but had to return them back at station at 10p. 8) So my 1st 3 hr block lasted 5 hours and I was unable to deliver the last 4 packages. 9) So..BYE BYE Amazon flex for package delivery. will try Instant offers..but mostly will stick to Door Dash where I know the area and not feel so rushed with less wear and tear on my car

I even paid a bonus for correctly completed deliveries. I found that this was the best way to get my deliveries done on a timely basis. I tried many other methods and found that the workers always found a way to circumvent the delivery and fail to make each delivery while still collecting their income. During deliver time I found them in restaurants, donut shops, bathrooms, home, sleeping in their cars and many other locations that prevented them from completing their jobs. The average work time was 2 hrs. per day which could be completed in 1.5 hrs. I felt like a baby sitter that was constantly having to supervise their every action to get the job done.

And Last: they won't crash, do you travel in airplanes ? do they crash everyday on your house or in your city? Today's technology is way more advanced then you think and they for sure will have small parachutes for your windshield, just in case. Don't think you are the smartest guy and people investing billions with years of experience in tech and management are dumb. When one product is made it is made by taking all these silly things in consideration. These things that you are talking about is not even the main challange. Main challenges are like reduction of cost and not what your stupid mind things.

Really stupid idea Amazon. I live in a gated community and now that you rarely use Fedex or UPS, but these drivers instead, they are not allowed in the community. The gate has to call me at work, but often I am not reachable. Then, I also own a business. and these drivers often attempt delivery after business hours- at 8:30 at night! Today, I opened my business to find an Amazon box left on the sidewalk and 8:50am before we I got there... a miracle it wasn't stolen!
@sfperalta
@sfperalta 3 жыл бұрын
The main reason Amazon want to contract out all this last-mile delivery is that it gets the most expensive part of delivery off their books and puts those costs on to their new "business" partners, who, as small businesses, can't take advantage of economies of scale, and may be taking the losses that Amazon is avoiding through this arrangement. Sweet deal for Amazon. Not clear whether the drivers make out so well on average.

Well, they can, because they can choose not to insure themselves for all kinds of stuff, they dont need safety plans for themselves etc. And in this case, they can keep the costs down a lot by driving old cars. (and while maybe counting repairs as a cost, not counting the time to deal with that kind of things as a cost) So basically its a way for the big companies to cut the cost by having the workers be self employed.

Worst job I ever had, for a side hustle. Drove Lyft and Uber and they are literal heaven compared to this nonsense. Having an SUV they load my truck up with 30-40 packages and 3 hours to do the deliveries at night 5:30-9. You DO NOT get paid for extra time spent delivering. They may send you 30-45 minutes away to deliver packages and do not compensate you for that extra hour. My husband delivered with me a few times and didn't want me to do it. Gps connectivity issues are the norm, had to get my own gps so I wouldn't be lost. I finally quit when they were 45 minutes late giving us packages, loaded me down with 35 packages anyways with 2 hours to deliver, I spoke to the manager and said it was way too much, and he told me I had to attempt to deliver them anyway. What they want you to do is use your own time into the night to get the packages delivered and if the packages are late past 9pm, they hold it against you. You have to drive them back to the distribution by 10 am the following day. When I arrive to drop off undelivered packages they gave me the run around about giving them back, shaming me for not delivering all 35 packages in 2 hours. Not on your life would I work here. EVER!

$72 for a 4hrs block! 14:30 to 18:30, 41 packages, 39 locations. That's $18/hr. Looks fair, but its NOT, 4hrs turned to be almost 5hrs. GPS is too slow and in most cases took me around in circles between drops within the same neighborhood. Last drop was 1hr 36 minutes away from my house. Spent around $22 on gas. (72-22=50) I end up making less than $10 an hour. (Taxes and vehicle wear-tear not factored). In reality, from 11:00am I was constantly watching and refreshing the app to see if the rates will increase, couldn't sign up for other gigs; the hours may overlap. The route was 70% rural un-tarmacked roads with drops 2-3 miles apart some even 9 miles. I left my house at 1:30pm returned shortly after 9:00pm, with less than $50 and a dusty hurting car from the beat up roads and constant hard braking due to a slow GPS. Flexible Flex Flexibility! 1. Option to choose blocks within own neighborhoods, to ease the long commute and also for smooth, faster deliveries.( you already have all our PI in your big data) 2. Factor the mileage for rural vs metro, easy vs staggered drops. 3. Amazon Flex App. needs alot of improvement. Navigation is about 5sec too slow, have to drive below speed limits not to pass an exit. Takes the driver around the block just to come back and deliver a package to the house on the opposite side of the road. Comparing with other gig platforms, I find the navigation too somber and downbeat. Gig Laborers, Platform workers, Independent contractors, Grey Economy you name it, Amazon lay a better foundation. I think the profitability of being an Amazon Flex driver might have a lot to do with where you live. I was talking to a Flex driver that lived within about 20 minutes of BWI Airport and he had mostly good things to say about. If you live in Los Angeles or DC you might be spending a lot more time sitting in traffic for a similar rate.
