My mother passed away after two years of being in a non medically induced coma. I remember she would cry when we came into the room and we would talked to her. It was like she was aware that we were there. I couldn't understand how she could feel like this when I thought she wasn't conscious. I struggled for a long time with her reactions and with guilt. She would wail and cry. I was 14 and in school, couldn't drive, so I couldn't keep her company as much as I wanted to. I felt guilty that she was alone for all that time. I was afraid that she would be isolated and sad. No offense, but this just kinda fucks me up even more. Now I feel like she must have been more aware of more than I thought and must have felt more terrified and helpless than I could have ever imagined. It makes me incredibly sad to think about. I can only hope that her dreams took her to amazing places. I just wish I could have saved her.

I lost my mom 2 years ago to cancer and the other night I had an amazing dream where I went back to my birthday in 2012 and I saw my mom again I saw my cat who also had died and I was so happy to be back with them and it all seemed so real and I wanted to keep living from that day forward and be with my mom again. But ofcourse I end up opening my eyes to this reality and realize I'm back to being alone and my mom being gone and I have no idea where she is I can only pray heaven exists. But dreams is the only chance I have to see my mom anymore and I cherish every dream I can get that involves her.

Such a fascinating question! I think that most likely she was seeing actual places as well as previously seen places/images warped with different brain imagery. Let me explain. I think that if she saw google images or tv programs or anything else about Alaska before the coma, her brain would use those same images during the coma. The images might have been mixed or merged with her previous visual experiences but since the brain can only gather the images from memories and cannot produce novel information it uses what it already has and mixes it together. I think it's kind of like coordinating clothing, you know? Each time you get a different outfit, sometimes the same outfit but you use only the clothes you have. I wonder if there's any facts in my thoughts, would be interesting to know more how this works. :)

Questions (hope they weren't asked yet) : How did you percieve time ? Did you have moments of complete black out (like sleep) or was time slower because you were kind of always dreaming ? Did you feel pain, or urges (like hunger, toilet...) ? Did you experience nightmares, or angish, feelings of being trapped or freaking out about not being able to move ? Did you have moments of pure lucidity like, just hearing noises and not being able to move like when you are in a half-sleep, knowing that you are in a coma ? Could you really pause and think sometimes or was it all that blurry and surreal ?

I had surgery in March when i broke my leg and ankle. The surgery itself went great lol. but 2 hours after i got back to my room i stopped breathing! Now here is the strange part! I could HEAR everybody! All the nurses and the doctors calling codes and yelling at me to breathe. I could hear them giving instructions to each other and i knew they were doing stuff to my body but i couldnt feel anything. I thought for sure i spoke to them and asked them to call my Mum and to pray but they told me later i never said a word! It was like i was on the other side of a glass wall - i was there - but not really!

+ forever21 I have this too, it's called sleep paralysis! It doesn't cause you any harm but it's so scary! It's normal for your muscels to be paralised during sleep, and sleep paralysis happens when the mechanism to get your muscels relaxed while you sleep stays when you wake up. If you're worried about it, look it up :)

IKR? ! for me that would explain why it's so damn near impossible for me to wake up in the mornings. why it takes me at least an hour to truly "wake up" like literally my vision is blurry I walk like a drunk I have no balance or coordination and it's such an ordeal just to frigging speak, like I can hear in my head that I am answering someone's question but irl my mouth doesn't move. everyone thinks I'm super weird I know. but it's true it's like this every morning, some times less than an hour if I slept well, more than an hour if I had little or rough sleep. caffeine helps a lot but now reading this comment made me laugh while also contemplating if this could be a real thing. even before I wake up I also have the deepest sleeps ever where I cant8 hear alarms, voices, sounds, I usually need to be physically shaken lightly to maybe sorta kinda get me out of my mini comas 😂😵😆

+Nancy Kozorezova No, it's not the same as dreaming. Coma is more like general anesthesia - you don't usually feel any pain, and this resembles the deepest part of the sleep cycle. People have had similar experiences while sleeping vs coma, but I don't think one should say they're the same when they aren't

I live in Alaska. It's beyond anything the human mind can project! I live in the foothills of the Alaska range, the one with Denali in it, and it's heaven. So much so that, even though I have terminal leukemia, I'm fighting to stay home as long as I can. It is a healing place where believing in something far higher than us is written all across the land and sky. When that higher power chooses to, it dances in a curtain of shimmering light or falls in frosty white piles as big fluffy snow flakes. It makes easing the worldly pain much more manageable.

my dad's been in a induced coma since August 7th... some guys beat him up severely their all gonna be in jail soon... he opens his eyes sometimes when they take off some of the drugs but I don't know if he's up. A couple days ago he was listening to what people said to him. Those people who did that to him tried to kill him and snap his neck but they stretched a vein and it caused a blood clot in his artery in his neck 😔 I really want him to wake up soon 😕💕 He has a breathing tube in and alot of I.V's. They said he could be in a coma for a long time. My sister was in a coma for 6 months 😢

My experiences were somewhat different. I was in a induced coma last oct. My brain had been completely shut down for 7 days so my brain processed nothing. Apparently my blood pressure was so high I was a expected to have a major stroke. So for me they took away any possibility of having a stressful thought. Apparently with induced coma's there are a few different levels of sleep that they can induce. The exact second my brain began to function again I do recall that intensely. I recall a glimpse of the blackness. One second I did not exist then the next I existed ounce more. The computer was shut off then rebooted is as close to an analogy I can come up with. It was like coming out of nothingness. Like a switch being flipped. Still not awake just starting the process. I don't really know how long that took. Another week went by before I really knew what was going on. I think that part took a fair bit of time. A few days. Vague recollections then of the nurses moving me. Faces introducing themselves. Immediately forgetting their names. I could not communicate with them. Their faces seemed huge to me. Zero sense of time or space. I really think you had much more interesting drugs than I had. lol After I woke up I had some minor hallucinations. I thought there was a hole in my throat. Stuff like that. The first day after I came back to consciousness I can of drifted to sleep...woke up...drifted to sleep. Each time I did this I thought a day had passed. Ground hog day. I thought It was a week going by, but it was only a day. I think the process of waking up and returning to consciousness was rather weird and I think took a while. The actual coma though. No thought process whatsoever. From the time I collapsed to the time I began to wake up seemed to be no time at all. I thought I had been asleep for a few hours. I was shocked when they told me I had been asleep for a week. .The drugs they use to induce coma's may very a little. There are a few types. They all contain opiates. The process of waking up from a coma is bizarre for sure. The actual coma though is a nice deep sleep. Still dealing with memory issues. Short term memory seemed to be affected the most for me. It really is a great conversation starter. lol

And what if each time we talk to one of our loved ones in what we think is the "real world" is just those conversations that are all in your head and you're just hearing them speak to you whilst you're in a coma. And also what if you learned an instrument or a different language while comatose, when you woke up from the coma you retained all that knowledge on how to speak the language you learnt, or how to play an instrument.

Thank you so much for this. My dad was in a coma for about 3 months following a head injury. Everyone at the hospital kept telling us he could hear us and to talk to him, and we did, but it was so difficult to not have him responding back and you really just lose faith that they really can hear you. I remember nothing - I've lost memory from about a week before the accident, and then I don't have any memories until I was in neuro rehab, in a completely different hospital!! But I was on a lot of midazolam, which messes with memory, so I put most of it down to that - but no, in my situation, it was like it never happened, I came back to normality and could not work out where 2-3 weeks had gone! Try not to be scared. You will be heavily sedated I assume and kept very comfortable. Hope all goes well.

My mom was in a coma about two months ago and once she recovered from it I tried to ask her what it was like and she said she couldn't remember a thing. She'd smile,wiggle her toes, move her hands,clench her eyes shut,etc when people spoke to her. There were even moments where she'd open her eyes for a few seconds at a time and nod a little to people who were speaking to her but she said she doesn't remember a single thing from it.

I think it's cool how the brain seems to invent reasons to why you were lying in uncomfortable positions for example, like when it doesn't have the eyes as an instrument to see what's going on it invents scenarios on its own (like the hammock & Alaska thing) to explain things in a logical way or something. This was really, really fascinating.

Thank you so much for sharing this. I also have severe lung issues due to premature birth and am going on a double lung transplant list. All tests have been completed. I was on a ventilator about 9 months ago and had an extremely similar experience when in the induced coma. U are the first one I have heard share their experience and it has put my mind at ease cuz this whole time I thought I was crazy when I was telling people about my experience. I'm 36 now but I seemed to live a very normal life with no oxygen required until I was 34 and something happened literally over night and the bottom end dropped out and now I am in a mess. He talked about how he thought he had cancer because a very close friend of him had a brain tumor and was having the same what should i call it....reaction ( does that make sense?) and that he had known that there was something wrong with him since december at christmas. Me being the little kid that i am didn't see any problem in dad and i was happy but hearing about this just made me sad and very worried. I would've not been this calm if he didn't say it face to face instead of in the hospital possibly dying. I'm only 13 and loosing my father already would be horrific for me as i have this HUGE bond with him I truly love him and don't want him away from me ever. It is sad that your mom died Katie and i can't even believe how hard it would be to go through this.

This video is so comforting, I was on ECMO for two months and stuff like this happened to me and I've been experiencing PTSD because a lot of the 'dreams' were pretty scary. But it's so nice to know I'm not alone in what happened to me. Thank you for this, it's still to painful to talk about my dreams.

just like normal sleeping, you arent aware you are in a dream state unless you are lucid; so unless she was lucid: no, she wasn't aware that she was in a coma until after she woke up. that is my assumption based on what i know, anyway

Sounds more like a dose of about 600mg diphenhydramine, you start to see people from the corner of your eyes and have conversations with them but when you go to look at them no one is there, your motor functions start to disappear and just swallowing a drink of water becomes a task at hand if you manage to squeeze the glass hard enough to even hold the glass.

Varun Dheerendra Yeah i did, they were not anywhere near as intense as they were in the coma but small things would pop up here and there. I remember the pictures on the wall would sometimes move and freak me out...

The Clairity Project Thats prtty scary, I had a different kind of illusion that used to scare me, but thats post trauma, I had these dreams and they used to be so real that i could'nt make the difference between dreams and reality, and my brain used to make up stories for me to believe the dream, it got so worse that i was taken to a phsycologist
