Was about to comment about that. Rolls-Royce named it the Merlin, and the US version was called the Packard V-1650 (the same exact Packard that made cars, Motor City). It was the same overall design, however, with creating new blueprints to suit American perspective layouts, dimensions and tolerances were altered to allow for mass production as Rolls-Royce built them with manual, fine tuning of clearances.

To be slightly "fair" - the US manufactured Merlin's could be classed as a slightly different engine all together since the design was reworked by US automakers to be much more viable to the US mass assembly line system. So your point still stands; I just think that the narrative being told on the engine being displayed / talked about should change slightly due to the variations that came from the different manufacturer processes.

Another thing about aircraft engines is that they are built for low RPM. Since propellers generate a lot of stress and are limited in performance by the tip speed. Propellers performance greatly decreases when the blade tips reach Mach. Hence why the piston is so fat as compared to car engines. Also aircraft engines have their crankshafts trying to rip out of the end of the case! The propeller/prop hub is sometimes bolted directly to the crankshaft. So the case is build to be able to transfer 1000+lbs directly from the crank to the aircraft. So it’s a chunky engine.
@EvilGav Жыл бұрын
The P51 wasn't designed for the engine nor vice versa. The engine was designed for a variety of British planes. The P51 was designed with the Allison engine, but the RAF thought it could be made better if they put a Merlin in it (as it was working very well in the Spitfire and Hurricane). And then a phenomenal plane was born.

The non-supercharged Merlin, used in tanks, etc, was called the Rolls Royce METEOR. James May expostulates at length on it in a certain episode of Top Gear, in which they compare a Meteor-powered Bentley with another monster machine, the German Brutus (? - if memory serves) which had a German aero engine.
@skylined5534 Жыл бұрын
There are a 'worrying' amount of cool Meteor powered cars out there it would appear! Not only was the meteor not supercharged but it also had less lightweight alloy and magnesium alloy engine components as they simply weren't a requirement for tanks. There's a great display of the Spitfire and lots of its components at Hanley Museum in Stoke on Trent. The display plane was flown over Stoke on Trent several times before being retired to be an exhibit. It used to be kept in a huge glass outhouse which was really cool but it was finally moved indoors sometime in the early to mid 80s.

Such a great episode. The propellor that engine was designed to turn imparted an insane amount of force back into the engine air airframe so that’s another reason those engines were built so beastly.
@preston51511 Жыл бұрын
The biggest reason the Merlin engine is so big is because in a propeller driven airplane, you are actually limited by how fast the propeller can spin. In the P-51, the engine was limited to 3000RPM by a propeller governor. Any faster and the propeller tips would go supersonic, causing loss of efficiency in thrust, becoming extremely loud, and eventually destroying the prop through erosion from supersonic shockwaves. So aircraft engines rather than spinning faster to make power, they simply become bigger and bigger because propellers can only spin so fast based on their diameter.

God bless Jay lenno, he easily could've been just one of those guys who sits on nice cars in a garage and keeps to himself but here he is holding court like a king among the donut goofballs. Nothing but love and respect for the guy

Don't forget that the Merlin was designed and first put into production by the British, the Americans only produced it under license albeit to help us with the war

Most yt videos I can have in the background because I can enjoy the information just by listening. But Donut videos' visuals are done so well I need to watch too. Thanks for the hard work y'all

I have to Congratulate the Donut crew. You guys have come so far, it is so Amazing And the Fact that you get to hangout with Jay in his Garage and get the Great Honor to drive some of his cars. Jay is my Favorite Car Collector and just an all around Great Guy. I would Love to be able to just wander through his Garages with Jay and just Take it all in. I have been a Motor head since I was about 6 yrs old and have been a Mechanic for over 25+ years. Hanging out with Jay in his Garage and Talking Shop is on my Bucket list, and Hopefully, maybe one day I can make it happen. Congrats Again Guys, you know you've made it When Jay let's you Drive his Cars. 😁😁👍👍
