The birthplace of Flamenco is in the hills of Granada, Spain. This is where the cave dwelling gypsies created and perfected this famous dance. Let me take you inside one of these Gypsy homes in Sacromonte. If you visit Granada, this place is not to be missed. It also offers stunning views of the Alhambra and surrounding landscape.

Just red a book that was kinda based on this place, people and culture. So of course I had to see what it looks like in real life. It is just amazing to see. This people really have had some hardship in their history, so it warms my heart to discover that they are still there (and thriving!) -if anyone wonders about the book, it's one of the books in the Seven sisters series by Lucinda Riley (I believe it's book 5)

Some have been turned into Tablaos, where they dance Flamenco for the public. Some are inhabited still yes, we saw some gypsies walking around near these caves. I am not sure how many people are living there. It was a very hot day and many people were staying inside. It was so much cooler and more comfortable inside the cave. It was better than air conditioning in hot summer.

@@TravelAddictGuy Liming is a very simple and inexpensive coating technique. It is applied mainly for aesthetic reasons (giving rise to white villages), but also for hygiene and to reduce the interior temperature of buildings. Unfortunately, whitewash is easily damaged and dirty. For this reason, the popular culture of some towns, especially in Andalusia, includes the annual whitewashing of houses. Whitewashed are popular in many warm areas of the planet, where they are used for their white color, which by reflecting solar radiation makes the walls absorb less thermal energy, thus obtaining cooler interiors in the houses. It is also used for its antiseptic properties, derived from the high alkalinity of the material. Lime allows the necessary perspiration of the walls, so liming is a good substitute for acrylic or plastic paints, which are not always convenient to use in old constructions because, as they are more waterproof coatings, they can cause unwanted retention of moisture in the enclosure. Lime is also a natural product that requires very little processing for its use, so it is a very ecological material, its main disadvantage being the need for periodic maintenance. It should be mentioned that before using it, the lime must be hydrated, going from CaO to Ca (OH) 2. Lime has been widely used in the peoples of Mediterranean influence and culture, finding signs of use since Neolithic times, and it is not only used to reflect the sun's rays and keep the house cool, it also destroys insects, fungi and other pathogens

How do they deal with sewage and waste?
@TravelAddictGuy
@TravelAddictGuy 3 жыл бұрын
They had a toilet in this one and running water in the bathroom, that was likely added later. I am sure earlier on that they had an outhouse or bucket to use. They most likely used large pots or water jugs too. Thanks for the question.

How do they breath in there when the door is shut ??? There is no window or anything ?
@TravelAddictGuy
@TravelAddictGuy 4 жыл бұрын
That's a good question, they have a gate so I would assume that they leave that open to allow fresh air in. Some of the caves we walked by had like blankets hanging in front of the entrances, we were here during the summer months. I don't remember seeing any windows, but in the beginning of the video it looks like the do have some kind of small window near the entrance. If I go back, I will ask the man. Great question, thanks for tuning in.
