What It’s Like To Own A Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow!

Down at the barns, Bob shares with us his story of owning and driving a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. From the moment he saw the car, to the moment he drove the car, to the moment he bought the car back, this video is a fun and informative look at one of the most iconic and luxurious cars in history.
In another of our series of love my car editions of the barns we talk to Bob who at the wonderful age of 80 has finally managed to buy the car of his dreams, a 1975 Royce Royce Silver Shadow mark 1 and what a beautiful car it is, using this Rolls as his daily driver he certainly gets some attention when shopping in his local supermarket. The Rolls Royce Silver Shadow Mk 1 was produced from 1965 and 1976 before the Mark 2 was introduced, one of the main features of these cars was the hydropneumatic suspension system which gave the passengers an incredibly smooth ride, here Bob explains his love of the car and why you wouldn't want to drive anything else

Very smart example, late series 1 cars are in my opinion the most desirable of all the Shadow/T series. As a long time RR/Bentley owner and enthusiast it's great to see someone else who shares the same passion. I hope Bob continues to enjoy his Shadow for many more years.

Beautiful car, I'm partial to Silver Shadows, having put quite a few miles on one a friend owned. Fantastic colour combination and condition on this example. But sorry Bob, that's not the original radio. It says Sony and CD Changer Control on it. No CDs back in 75.

My son lives in Beverly Hills California and he has a pristine Caribbean Blue 1973 Silver Shadow. It is his pride and joy, along with his immaculate Dodge Viper. He’s from Leyland in Lancashire. Not bad for a northern lad!

What a beautiful Rolls Royce, it looks in terrific condition, I worked in the car industry all my working life, from the early 70s till the 2020s, and Rolls Royce have always been the pinnacle of engineering.

Bought my Rolls- Royce back in. 1991.I traded a 300 TD in on it. I've had 2 300sd cars since then which is better for the pocket. Rolls are money pits, but extraordinary motorcars. 👍

Strange anomaly… the Registration comes up as a 1978 shadow… by which time the ShadowII was well into production with its altered dashboard, steering, exhausts and rubber bumpers. Bobs car also has very interesting head rests and contrasting leather and velour interior. My own Shadow is the same exterior colour, Pewter and dates from 1976 on an R suffix plate.

Probably a Jersey car originally. There were some very interesting interior trim combinations in the 70"s which haven't aged well !

Just started watching this video and have to mention, it's not a mark 1, it's simply a Silver Shadow, the later version in a mark 2 as it followed the Silver Shadow in this clip. Now watched it to the end, it's a BEAUTIFUL car, WELL DONE. My friend's 1974 Silver Shadow is a show car and it lives next to his other show car, a 1963 Silver Cloud 3. Both beautiful cars. Everyone that watched this video should look up Johnny Cash's Rolls Royce. Someone bought it and put a Tesla drivetrain. Actually a very cool build. I have a 76 rhd silver shadow 2 same color as Bobs in Texas.

I dare say the Kiwi boot polish works okay on tyres, too. In fact, I’d try to black out those white striped tyres in the back whilst I was at it. Whitewalls are for Yank tanks…

Whitewalls were normal on the Silver Shadow. Rarer now because cheapskate owners fit cheap tyres.

@@byteme9718 In the 1960s-1980s, I didn't see very many British cars fitted with white striped tyres in the UK, and so I've associated them with Duesenbergs and Packards and such. In the old days, one couldn't turn around without hitting a white striped tyre in the Americas.

@@jimcabezola3051 My information is accurate and verifiable and the Avon Turbospeed tyre developed for the car had a whitewall for the Rolls-Royce models while the Bentley equivalent has a standard tyre. It was a very subtle whitewall. These are rare cars so of course you won't see many but Aston Martin used the same size tyre and sometimes whitewalls.

@@byteme9718 Indeed, there is nothing that suggests that anyone has said anything that is inaccurate or unverifiable. In matters of Avon Turbospeeds, which were standard fitment on Rolls-Royces, Bentleys and Aston Martins "back in my day", why, those tyres were legends. My only assertion was that I personally and rarely saw many flash cars using whitewalls in my native Suffolk. Indeed, none of Her Late Majesty's cars seemed to wear them. When I moved to the US, though, I saw Rolls-Royces and more garden-variety cars fitted with whitewalls. I didn't see too many of them when I lived in Germany and other places. They seem an American fashion. I'm not certain if I'd put whitewalls on the rear wheels and have plain, black tyres on the front wheels of my car. My utterly unimaginative and mundane temperament would feel a kind of tension were I to own this fabulous Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow with THIS set of tyres. Since I'd find it easier to just paint out the white stripes on what are probably perfectly satisfactory rear tyres than to apply white stripes to the undoubtedly more than adequate front ones...I'd just do the former to reduce any self-induced OCD-related tension. A car with all-black tyres or all-whitewall tyres just slides through my empty mind more easily. A car with a mix of these? Not so much...

@@jimcabezola3051 The mix of tyres in this video is ridiculous but then too is much of its content. For some years they've been made in batches and can sometime be impossible to obtain and to be honest so too are the blackwalls. No need to paint out the whitewall ever as its only on one side so, if pressed, you just fit that on the inside. The late Queen's cars were Phantoms and were fitted with very different crossply tyres. If I were ever in the unenviable position of having this tyre combination I'd match them side to side, do that and hardly anyone would notice.

Beautiful example. The engine compartment looks very tidy. I just don't know what someone did with that interior, though. RR never produced anything like that. There were some special orders of velour interiors, but not 2 tone. I suspect someone did that to fix areas of wear, but I'm not too fond of it.

During the 70"s there were some very strange interiors and two toning was surprising popular. I had a 75 car with beige leather seats and burgundy velour inserts. If you were prepared to pay, RR would supply it.

@@joneprober No, no one likes ignorant bastards who take up two spaces. Before you mention "jealousy" I own a Silver Shadow II and a T2 and both slot easily intro small Tesco parking spaces because they're so narrow compared to modern cars. The only slight issue is the length that causes a bit of an overhang but there's never a need to intrude on another space. Easier to use Lidl or Aldi that have sensible width spaces to prevent door damage.

My beautiful Chill Silver Mark 4 Mondeo Edge was badly damaged in a car park where the driver fled the scene. Since then I have taken up more space than needed when parking in a.single bay. I do not feel guilty, just a little more reassured.
