Bentley Continental S2 or RR Silver Cloud 2 for looks and presence. Bentley Continental R ot Continental T as a daily driver. The Continental S1 or RR Silver Cloud I are just as imposing, but the 6-cylinder motor and lack of power steerig makes it much worse drive than the S2. The S3 is a fine car as well, but I prefer the single headlights on the older cars.

I owned a '62 Silver Cloud, a '96 Silver Spur, an '88 Bentley eight, and currently an '89 Turbo R. Believe it or not, the Bentley 8 was the best driver of them all.

I've always considered the Silver Cloud as the quintessential Rolls Royce; it has such an aura and great presence. I often dream of the chance to be driven in one while luxuriating in that wonderful rear seat!

I think the best Rolls-Royce is a Jaguar XJ6 of the same era, by far! :) Better engineering in so many ways and no high pressure hydraulics.

A Spirit 111 is still very affordable, a decent low mileage example is under £20k. What you do need however is a garage large enough to keep it in. Treat yourself !

Excellent review and comparison. As an Owner of 2 shadows, 2 shadows 2 and a Spirit 2, I love them all. If I were to keep one it would be my 1973 shadow, being the best synthesis of them all and symbol of the brand.

The red Coupe' is referred to as a Corniche but has a Bentley grill. Is it a Bentley or Rolls-Royce? If it's a Bentley it should have a Continental badge on the boot lid. If it is a Rolls-Royce It should have a Rolls-Royce grill.

Im in the US and had a 1979 LHD RR Corniche Coupe . it was my dream car. I loved it and since selling it miss tremendously. Finished in a two tone finish with chestnut to the bottom half, and an unusual light sand on top. The interior leather was stunning buttercream slightly off from the standard white. If another Corniche Coupe comes along I might be tempted ...

Crewe built Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars, based on the method of running improvements being incorporated during the course of production results in certain batches of cars that stand out as being "better." Here in the US the Crewe built car that is just right is the 50,000 series Mulliner Park Ward Corniche and Camargues built from late 1979 through 1980. These have the new improved mineral oil hydraulics along with the older more reliable and powerful carburetors instead of the sometimes troublesome, less powerful, slower fuel injection. The exhaust note on the carbs is just a touch more throaty and sounds like a big V8 should. This is also the end of the line for the fixed head Corniche, which is especially attractive without the eventual convertible top repairs. These 49 state cars do not meet California smog laws. A California car has fuel injection and the suffix "C" at the end of the chassis number.

In some images, a R-Type or Mk VI is visible, but you don’t present it? Why? I used to have ALL of those models, you speak about and I came back to the BEST and have an R-Type from 1953 and a Mk VI by Mulliner from 1951! They are the best, the last manuals and all of them had a huge sliding roof, which makes them the most comfortable in summer, plus: they are under 5 meters long, very practical though and even in terms of reliability THE BEST!

Had to comment to you mate. My retirement in on the horizon too. I took the plunge and bought a late '76 Shadow, as I had to have the chrome bumpers. I also prefer the dash of the Shadow, but hey... had I come across a Shadow II that I could not resist, perhaps it would have been one of those. Good luck with your search!

I took delivery of a new 1978 Shadow II age 24 for London delivery tax free to take home to Australia after 15 months savings 92% import and sales tax. . Youth hostelled across Europe in it for 5 months. The SSII was quite a fun drive with rack and pinion steering, Citroen derived suspension and good handling. Huge fun punting it along intermediate roads in UK and Europe... It did suffer from quite a few bugs, typical of British cars from the late 70's... Including a "Failure to Proceed" 6 weeks old near Stonehenge...

The Cloud is, without doubt, what several generations feel is quintessentially Rolls Royce, and it is beautiful. For amazing drivability and charm, a late 1950s Rolls Royce Silver Dawn/ Bentley R type comes second for me. Properly maintained and set up, they really can be enthusiastically driven and are small enough for daily use-petrol money permitting!

The best car I've ever owned is the Bentley Turbo R. Better than my Astons or Bristols. But I have to say the Bentley Corniche is pretty special. Also a late Silver Shadow II in the right colour with a 75 Paris number plate, Sundym glass, and yellow headlights is epic.

I like the Camargue. Never did when they came out, but now they sort of still look futuristic. I saw one that had been updated with 18" wheels, Turbo R engine etc and it really looked good. However, if I was to buy one, I'd probably want a Turbo RT (and then buy a Turbo R because of the price difference).

Between the two of you, I think you've got about spot on - both cars are icons, and I'd happily have either one, though back in the real world, with my own money, I'd be looking at a mid/late '90's Turbo R or Brooklands, for their everyday usability and more modern conveniences (one day I will). Thanks, always enjoy your video's. Cheers!

It's strange how the equivalent Bentleys are cheaper than the Rolls-Royce versions their based on. Recently saw a beautiful 1997 Bentley Turbo R LWB in Mulberry Mica with 65k one owner car great condition for 12,500.

We had a Bentley Eight and then moved onto a Continental R which to my mind is the last pure Crewe car ; level of finish much higher than the four door cars being coach built Having said that we also have a 2008 Arnage which to my mind is just about the end of legacy Crewe . Beyond that and it’s really more VW group than Crewe heritage. I have always loved the Shadow and Cloud , and for me the Arnage is a much more modern expression of those cars . You can see the styling cues but have 450 hp , and a much stiffer chassis

I think the guy from NZ has had too much of the amber nectar ! I doubt if more than a few hundred cars were ever exported there. A good Shadow 1 or 11 is a joy to own. Whilst the Shadow 11 with rack and pinion steering drives better, it's federal style rubber bumpers aren't as popular as the earlier chrome bumpered cars. I have a 1975 Bentley T1 and my brother has a 1978 Shadow 2. Both are lovely cars and not expensive to own, it's our hobby !

A Shadow 11 with the advent of rack and pinion steering drives so much better, but many people dislike the federal style rubber bumpers, rather than the chrome on earlier cars. It would be pretty easy to make an argument for any of these being the best. They all have some great attributes and certain things set each apart for one reason or another. Every time you do a video on these things I keep asking myself why on Earth I haven't owned one yet. Then I drive past a petrol station, cop a glance at the prices and remember. I wonder what purists would think if I dropped a diesel into one?
