A good downshifting technique I picked up from an older racer: When you're decelerating and under engine breaking you 1: push or pull on the shifter like you're trying to shift into neutral. 2: blip the throttle, this will unload the gears and allow you to shift into neutral, it will also match the revs of the engine to the lower gear if you blipped the proper amount. 3: push in the clutch and shift into the lower gear. It takes practice of course but you'll be able do downshift very smoothly and quickly.

It's grinding cuz you're clutching. if you just blip the throttle as you downshift and shift faster, your engagement will be much cleaner. but yeah you don't need to clutch on up or down shifts. just stab the throttle. you have to do it quickly too. dog boxes have no chill even if you're going slow. your shift has to be fast. no clutch just with throttle blip as it engages

So, I got to rebuild the very same TKO dogbox I drove about two years ago. It shifted fine, but was leaking and wasn't properly dial indicated to the back of the engine, so the input shaft bearing had to be replaced. -- When you're idling in neutral without using the clutch, the engine is rotating the lower counter shaft and all of the gears are spinning. The output shaft is stopped. At a 900 RPM idle with 6-finger plates, you have 5400 chances every second to execute a shift. -- When you engage first gear, the counter shaft immediately stops. -- When you're rolling, the countershaft is immediately slowed to the new upshift speed. -- Downshifting is similar, but has some implications. 5th has a little gear turning a big gear. So, when you need to go from 5th to 2nd like when you slow down for a slow hairpin, the countershaft has to go from 1800 RPM to 4000 RPM and the clutch friction disc has to accelerate as well. When you double your speed, you quadruple the energy expended, so this hits 20 times harder in the opposite direction as a from-stop shift, with a loud BANG! -- So when you downshift, it's more ideal to over-shoot the rev match and have the lightest clutch disc you can find. You do this by applying the clutch enough to come out of gear, possibly releasing the clutch, revving the engine, properly using the clutch, and performing the shift. The lighter your flywheel is, the better this will work.

Look up how to clutchless shift a motorcycle. Itll teach you how to drive a dogbox. Its grinding on downshifts because you dont blip the throttle if you did blip the throttle the input shaft rpm would go up as the output stayed the same and the digs would slip and quickly rev match easily. You wouldnt need to concentrate on it. Let the roms drop low asf then blip the throttle and shift down

Yeah but those old and heavy automatic transmission are maybe fine for drag racing but way to slow for roadcourse racing! Get a tremec for that, that the cheapest and most universal transmission that you can easily drive in all those American cars (there are also quiet a few for european and japanese cars). Also the slushbox aka torque converter would violently overheat when doing real racing. For the few seconds of going straight in a line when dragracing they are perfect however.

If the downshifts aren't pin point perfect, will it damage it or does it just regularly make aggressive clunks when downshifting ?
@CJ-ty8sv
@CJ-ty8sv 3 жыл бұрын
It can damage the dogs over time depending on if it noise is dog teeth bounce or just engagement shock load (dog teeth bounce = bad, engagement shock load = not so bad). The key with downshifting on dog boxes is you have to be fast with them regardless even if rev matching but rev matching does help reduce the need to be fast on downshifts to a degree unless the rev match is 100% perfect. The reason is, when you are downshifting, the slider hub that engages the gear has to accelerate the gear which in turn has to accelerate the countershaft, the input shaft and the clutch disk, plus plus overcome any frictional drag from the oil. That is a fair bit of mass that has to be accelerated. Since that mass doesn't easily want to be accelerate, the dog teeth tend to bounce off of each other rather than engaging if the shift is not reasonably fast or faster. This is what you dont want that can damage them. Even with fast downshifts though, there can be a more noticeable clunk when they engage because of the shock load created by the mass that you are trying to accelerate that I mentioned above. This though is not normally a problem relating to damage as long as the dogs on the gear and hub are hardened to the right hardness during manufacturing (think of it like banging two hammers together; if they are good quality hammers, they wont damage each other by doing this). This clunk though is reduced by good rev matching on the downshifts because the mass is already accelerated closer to the right speed thus reducing that shock load and therefore reducing the noise from said shock load.

@@CJ-ty8sv You seem knowledgeable on gearboxes. Do you know why sequential/dogboxes have that "wobble" sound when going on or off throttle? It also happens on some gearshifts. Ive heard this sound on F1 cars, and rally cars too, when they shift and when apply throttle. I love that rev wobbling or bouncing effect and wonder what causes it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIq8cmWgepiNm5I Here's a vid of an f40 LM with a racing transmission, and it has the same rpm bounce while shifting.
@CJ-ty8sv
@CJ-ty8sv 3 жыл бұрын
@@siddharthsharma8940 Its the loading and unloading of the dogs and gears due to torque vs load fluctuation in the drivetrain. Since there is a "mile" of clearance between the dog teeth on the slider hub vs the receiving windows on the gears, the engine sees more harsh loading and unloading so you get a surging (wobble) type effect (for lack of better terms). Some of it also is coming from the mesh of the gears too because of the coarser gear mesh used in most dogboxes. Even everyday street cars do it too but its virtually unnoticeable because all the meshing components are in a significantly finer/tighter meshed relationship, so you don't have the _"slope"_ or _"slack"_ in the system like you do in a dogbox. Plus, unlike a dogbox, the helical fine mesh gears of a street car box don't whine so you do hear the auditable indication of it like you did is a coarse mesh straight cut gear type dogbox.

Dude every manual driver dog box or not should Rev Match / Double clutch for smoother shift. If you're not you are simply a noob, with a dog box!...smh

Sounds like a real POS. Why would you want this? You have to avoid down shifting and hearing clunking all day. Don't understand why you would do this?? The car isn't a race car nor does it have 1000HP

Dogbox refers to how the teeth are shaped. They have pointier ends and have a gap when fully engaged so that you dont need syncros or a clutch to shuft gears.
