The tendency of the wheels when moving to want to move the engine at a higher speed versus the engine being at closed throttle resisting that increase in speed. Pretty simple concept.

Engine breaking is just closed valves on the exhaust stroke

@@anthanybowden not so much. Only valve that closes is the butterfly valve in the throttle, cam valves function normally. Since there's an air restriction in the intake, during intake stroke virtually no air enters the cylinder, and generally there's also spark/fuel cut so the spark plugs and injectors leave the cylinder dry during compression and power stroke. During the exhaust stroke it still pushes out the the tiny amount of air, but nothing burned. No power is made, so you're really just fighting the inertia of the unpowered engine, and the air pressure caused by closed throttle.

The dogs on the gear at 6:18 are so beyond hammered, I doubt that gear would actually hold lawn mower torque. I learned a lot about undercutting dogs and re-shimming factory transmissions when I worked on motorcycles for road racing years ago. Lots of painstaking grinding to get the dogs and holes with the proper engagement to pull themselves together under power instead of pushing apart, and a lot of careful adjustments to get 90% or better dog engagement in the holes. All that said, synchro boxes also have dogs, but they're super tiny compared to a "dog" box. I have a bunch of spare parts from my Getrag 233 rebuild that are really awesome for demonstrating exactly how synchronizers work and how dogs engage. That gearbox is also known as the Toyota V-160, a legendary transmission designed for 400 N m of torque, but capable of surviving 1000 ft-lbs of torque.

I was doing about 95 or so in a '64 Chevy shortwide i used to have... It had an auto on the tree with a shift kit mated to a 383 stroker.. I was talking to a friend and snagged the shifter with my hand and slammed the tranny into reverse, O.O, i thought for sure that was the end of that tranny, but all that happened was a serious white smoking of tires as they flew into reverse and back again real quick... Whoever built that trans was damn good lol...I miss that truck.

Not all motorcycle gearboxes use a grooved selector shaft. Some, such as Jawa & CZ, use a ratchetting selector fork guide plate, which is moved via sprung pawls, which are activated by a prong on the gear pedal shaft. On Jawa & CZ gearboxes there is also an automatic declutching mechanism (a slick shifter) when ever the gear lever pedal is lifted or depressed. Holding the gear pedal fully up or down pulls in the clutch, allowing the rider to use the gear pedal as a backup clutch control should the clutch cable break.

I shifted from 90mph into Reverse in an old Ford Aerostar van and rolled the thing three times down a hill, landing upside down in a little baby creek with a tiny dot of water trickling through. "The Incident" caused most of the windows to quit existing and the baby creek made it's way through, gently flowing over the roof, which was now a foot underneath me.. Fortunately, I just put my seatbelt on like 60 seconds prior to "The Incident". So did my passenger. When we spun, we got slammed into the doors from the G forces and we made eye contact, which I'll never forget. We spun hard about 2¾ rotations from the rear end locking up So here we are...both strapped upside down in our seats like a coupla dummies what just flipped a van. After a few seconds of mental regrouping, I look over "Holy shit...You all good bro? You still with me...what a fuckin ride" I look down at the floor shifter...which is still in R... "Don't want anyone seeing that" I chuckled, as I slipped it back into it's proper crashing position of D. After establishing that we were both alive, our next move was to get out. Mother nature didn't miss a beat, as the stream successfully navigated directly under myself. There is no easy way of undoing yourself while not falling...I dropped right on my neck and got a little wet from the tiny water, with my crash buddy following suit moments after. We squeezed out our respective side windows, which were nowhere to be seen if you're keeping score. As I emerge into the world, I am confronted by a short, but steep hill that is blocking me from getting back up to the road. We both slid down a few times which was absolutely hilarious, when suddenly we hear a stern voice call down, "You boys alright?" To which I replied "Yeah...we're good", and he disappears behind the hill. Between laughing, crashing and being quite steep, this fuckin hill is kicking my ass and it must of took a solid 90 seconds to successfully tackle it. The guy was nowhere to be seen!!! Haha...about 2 minutes later an off duty fireman showed up because he heard "The Incident" and went looking for skid marks on the state route. This all happened down in the Southern Tier of New York state outside of a teeny little town called Nunda...on the first day of school in 1993, when I skipped school, walked to her job, and stole the van for the day. Drove it 70 miles to my buddies dad's hunting cabin and had some peach wine and played with some rifles, shotguns and bows for 4 hours. We got a little squirrelly on the dirt road and buckled up...we were gonna coast down this 5 mile long hill on the state route, and we hit a pothole as I was putting it into Neutral. It went into Reverse instead...which caused "The Incident" you just read about.
