The selector shaft would have worked perfectly if it was animated correctly, because right now it just looks like theres a shaft over the traditional H pattern selector system and with some random grooves.. The tendency of the wheels when moving to want to move the engine at a higher speed versus the engine being at closed throttle resisting that increase in speed. Pretty simple concept.

Engine breaking is just closed valves on the exhaust stroke

@@anthanybowden not so much. Only valve that closes is the butterfly valve in the throttle, cam valves function normally. Since there's an air restriction in the intake, during intake stroke virtually no air enters the cylinder, and generally there's also spark/fuel cut so the spark plugs and injectors leave the cylinder dry during compression and power stroke. During the exhaust stroke it still pushes out the the tiny amount of air, but nothing burned. No power is made, so you're really just fighting the inertia of the unpowered engine, and the air pressure caused by closed throttle.

I was doing about 95 or so in a '64 Chevy shortwide i used to have... It had an auto on the tree with a shift kit mated to a 383 stroker.. I was talking to a friend and snagged the shifter with my hand and slammed the tranny into reverse, O.O, i thought for sure that was the end of that tranny, but all that happened was a serious white smoking of tires as they flew into reverse and back again real quick... Whoever built that trans was damn good lol...I miss that truck.

The dogs on the gear at 6:18 are so beyond hammered, I doubt that gear would actually hold lawn mower torque. I learned a lot about undercutting dogs and re-shimming factory transmissions when I worked on motorcycles for road racing years ago. Lots of painstaking grinding to get the dogs and holes with the proper engagement to pull themselves together under power instead of pushing apart, and a lot of careful adjustments to get 90% or better dog engagement in the holes. All that said, synchro boxes also have dogs, but they're super tiny compared to a "dog" box. I have a bunch of spare parts from my Getrag 233 rebuild that are really awesome for demonstrating exactly how synchronizers work and how dogs engage. That gearbox is also known as the Toyota V-160, a legendary transmission designed for 400 N m of torque, but capable of surviving 1000 ft-lbs of torque.

Not all motorcycle gearboxes use a grooved selector shaft. Some, such as Jawa & CZ, use a ratchetting selector fork guide plate, which is moved via sprung pawls, which are activated by a prong on the gear pedal shaft. On Jawa & CZ gearboxes there is also an automatic declutching mechanism (a slick shifter) when ever the gear lever pedal is lifted or depressed. Holding the gear pedal fully up or down pulls in the clutch, allowing the rider to use the gear pedal as a backup clutch control should the clutch cable break.
