I'm starting beginner Engineering classes at University (Calculus and Physics, etc.) after deciding to do a career change, so I'm older than most students. It will be challenging but I know it's worth it and I love watching your videos detailing the work behind it all.

I've been seriously considering going back to school for civil engineering and making a career pivot as well. I graduated 10 years ago with a BA in performing arts, but I enjoyed and excelled in a lot of science programs in grade school so it could have gone either way back then. I've been taking some free classes online to brush up on my math skills and gauge my knowledge deficit, so I can prepare to apply and go back to school. Best of luck in your journey!

i enjoyed your video Ben. I started life in a small company, learnt so much and was given far more responsibility than was due (they must have seen something in me). The biggest lesson I learnt was getting an independent check/review of my work (learnt that the hard way). All the best.

Really enjoying your channel and content. You’re dropping absolute gems of knowledge on the industry. Just wanted to ask how long did it take for you to feel confident in your abilities? As a new Civil Engineer Graduate, I have been worried about my design abilities or getting calculations wrong that could be catastrophic.

Some things I am confident designing and there is also a bunch of things that I’m not confident designing. One of the things I did that help me feel more confident is to confirm the methods I’m using to do my design with other sources. These sources could be other engineers in my team, a textbook or even an online tutorial on KZbin. Getting confirmation that what you’re doing is right will help you feel more confident and should help you to stop worrying that your design is going to fail. Hope this helps!

I have one question want to ask you. For a civil/structural/geotechnical engineer, what industry in Canada has relatively higher salaries and more job opportunities? Currently I can think of house, infrastructure or energy industry. Looking forward to your answers🤭

Hey thanks! I’m not too sure about the specifics in Canada but typically for graduates of the civil engineering major the areas that pay the most are mining and on-site construction roles

Thanks! I think the program you are referring to is Bluebeam. Bluebeam is essentially a very powerful pdf editor, not design software :)

I am not the sharpest tool in the shed but I am interested in being a strictly engineer. Would this be a career path I should pursue? Or would I waste my time and fail. Please be honest. I don’t want to waste my GI BILL on something I won’t be able to pass.

If you are prepared to put in the time and effort required to learn the content, it doesn’t matter how “smart” or “not smart” you think you are. 99% of people going into a civil/structural engineering degree are starting from knowing nothing so the thing that will differentiate the people who fail, pass and excel will be their consistent effort. If you are interested and have a passion for it, I say go for it!

Thanks! It’s so hard to give a range because there are so many factors to consider: location, expertise, company size and type, etc. To get an idea for the role you are thinking about you could look at similar roles on job posting sites and see what you can find :)

How is structural engineering/civil engineering industry in Australia? I am planning to do my masters in Australia and, if god permits, settle there too. Do you think it's the right decision shifting from India to Australia for MS, cause India has a pretty lazy industry? Just wanted your opinion on this. Thank you
