I lived in Toronto from 1996 to 2022. Toronto has really bad homeless and mental illness situation which none of the politicians want or care to fix. The city has gotten WAY too expensive and becoming unlivable for the average person unless you have a job that pays 70,000 + per year or husting like a mofo. It is a beautiful and pretty safe city otherwise. You can meet a lot of different people from different parts of the world and also you can find foods from all around the world.

As someone who's lived in Toronto for over 30 years, here are some things I like about Toronto. Public transport: the TTC does the best job with the smallest subsidy. Libraries: a really wide range of books, and you can have one delivered to your branch from another! Immigrants: I like seeing lots of nationalities who speak different languages. And I like the wide range of group activities you can find! (It's a good city for Meetup...)

I lived in Toronto for 6 years - from 2016 to 2022, and recently I moved to Richmond BC. Toronto is an amazing city with a lot of opportunities and with very diverse population. There's always something happening there in terms of cultural and sport events, and the city is a truly vibrant world class city. However, after 6 years I felt that everything became too familiar for me, and I just wanted to change the scenery and to leave the "concrete jungle" to a place with more nature. The winters with their humid penetrating cold, and the freezing winds that make your face feel burned, also played a role in my decision to move to a mild climate of BC. Anyway, Toronto will always be in my heart, and I feel that it even became a part of my DNA.

NGO or GOVT should open shelters for homeless with less intensive work regime. Homelessness or poverty is always there as there comes a situation in life, it is not possible to get out of it for everyone, like disability, illness and lack of suitable opportunity.

My grandparents moved to Toronto as newlyweds from Midland, Ontario in 1920 to the Riverdale neighborhood just east of downtown. My grandfather spent his entire career with Toronto Hydro. They raised 4 kids here, including my mom who is now 92 years old and has also lived here all her life. Although I have traveled and lived in other places I love this city with my whole heart and would never leave for long. Currently living in Etobicoke in the west end. Of course there are flaws with the city but overall I think it's a great place to live and I am proud to say I'm from Toronto!

Toronto is a great city, I've lived here for 16 years. I love the food scene, the walkability, the liveliness and diversity. There's always something fun to do. The parks, trails, beaches and entertainment are all good. The cons would be cost of living, the weather can be either too hot in the summer and wickedly cold/windy in the winter. The TTC is brutal if you're not right on the subway line. Toronto is the most fast paced city in Canada which can be good but there's also more self centeredness that comes from that and many people lack consideration. The traffic and construction are major cons. Overall I love the city, it's also pretty safe considering the size of the population. It's rare to see physical fights or violence break out downtown. Toronto isn't too swanky of a city, it has a very middle class feel with options for upscale outings/shopping. The wealthiest neighborhoods are pretty much purely residential and the people there are still down to earth for the most part.

@@Knight_647 I live in Rosedale and have rarely come across such negativity from people while out and about downtown but it may be because I am a woman and also my neighborhood. Perhaps it's the neighborhood you live in? You could try living in Greektown or the lower beaches ect...Most neighborhoods in TO are cultural pockets that better suit people from similar cultures. If you are 6'6 that may unfortunately make you the target of men with inferiority complexes since I find tall men attract aggression from smaller men no matter where they go. I live in Winnipeg, The New Travel. I have visited Toronto and I have mixed feelings about the city. Things I like about Toronto - it's lively, there are many things to do, it's culturally diverse, lots of different restaurants. You will never get bored. Things I hate about Toronto - it's very crowded (too many people), traffic jams during rush hour , very high rents, very high cost of living, transportation costs, elitism (Toronto people think they are better than everyone else) it's a rat race ( hard to get jobs and if you do have one, maintaining a job. Companies can fire you because there are lots of people they can hire to replace you).

New Travel, I also have mixed feelings about Winnipeg where I live. Good things I like about Winnipeg - it's culturally diverse, lots of restaurants, easy to get around the city ( reliable transportation), lots of things to do ( go to a NHL game etc.). Things I hate about Winnipeg - too many homeless people ( it's more visible here than other cities), too much road construction everywhere, winters can be severe, lots of crime like Toronto ( there is a murder or car theft almost every day), too many Native or aboriginal people who think they are God's gift to mankind. Most of them don't work, get free money, commit most of the crime here, they are always needy although the government gives them billions of dollars.

Things I like about BC and Alberta - The Rockies (scenery) - Jasper, Lake Louise, Banff. Low price of gasoline in Alberta (its only 1.39 in some places per litre. Things I don't like about BC and Alberta - everything costs double the price than other provinces in the supermarkets (this is despite no GST in Alberta), high rents, elitism ( Albertans especially have a more red neck attitude towards others and think they are better than other Canadians)

I've grown up in this city and can say the homelessness issue was gotten alot worse as property values have increased. Years ago many of the homeless looked like young kids who were smoking a bit of weed but otherwise looked ok. Now I see young people who look like their having severe mental health episodes in the street, soiled clothing with rotted teeth probably indications of crack use much harder drugs. It's really sad and I think that the city had to put more supports in place.

The cost of living is very high in Toronto. It is the second most expensive next to Vancouver. It is all relative, but you will find more rude impatient people in Toronto than the rest of the province. However, people are kind pretty much everywhere in Canada. Something about a Canadian sensibility. Very polite too. The bigger cities tend to have less sociability than a city with a population of 500,000 or less. People are less rushed in those cities.

Thanks for sharing your encounter with the homeless person. I totally agree that we would be surprised if we ever give a homeless person a chance to share their story. I lived in Toronto for 5 years, and now I live in Vancouver. I did enjoy my time in Toronto, although it's a concrete jungle with limited access to nature (downtown particularly). I agree with the girl who said a lot of people walk alone in the streets of Toronto, unfortunately, that's something pretty common in big cities in Canada, generally speaking. It's hard to find a sense of close community... I guess it's part of the individualistic culture.

My theory on why more people are by themselves, is young people today have grown up texting, and using other social media to contact friends and family, where we had to either phone them or physically interact. There is less of a personal interaction today, and it shows not only seeing people by themselves, but more depression, drug use and loneliness. Those who want to meet someone do it online now, instead of actually meeting for a date

I often have to defend Toronto from all the stereotypes that exist here. I think the idea of Toronto in a lot of Montrealer's minds is a pre-2000s Toronto but in reality is so much richer and different than that and it takes spending more than 3 days near the CN tower and the financial district to really discover all the charming neighbours it has to offer!

Geographic situation ? It's located in a dead end at the bottom of a lake that is 60m higher than the sea. Not exactly a world class city. The rest of the area is called the rust belt. It looks ok just because Toronto thrives on political hands out but has no geographical advantage. The only worst place in the world is Mexico city.

Great video. I went to Toronto fairly frequently between 2007 and 2011, and the funny thing is that whenever I met a random person and they found out I was from Montreal, they all said they wanted to come to Montreal. The general impression I had of the people, compared to Montrealers, is they were less relaxed, not as "comfortable in their skin", so to speak. I think it's because most Torontonians come from somewhere else and are trying to fit in. So they are acting, not being themselves.

Same thing about New York or London. Yet in Toronto people are trying to compete to live and that is where it feels a bit like a rat-race rather than pure let-loose individuality like Mtl. In Toronto, I will say, everyone minds their business and thus I feel free to kind of be myself because the people that are coming here are making out culture become less anglo (square) and conformist. In Toronto though, everyone is trying to out-dress each other, out-perform, out-act, which is to your point. When I arrived in Mtl, I didn't feel like I needed to be the best, and it felt freeing. I will say, although I did feel more liberated with what I could wear in MTL, I felt paralysing anxiety about the language aspect and interacting everyday. While MTL'ers are pretty chill, It was common to come across FFFs that gave me attitude when I couldn't fully communicate. In Toronto I feel less stressed because of the social aspect, but more stressed because I am constantly surrounded by 3 million people.

@@elid5123 I agree with both of you guys and your observations, esp about the competitive aspect of Toronto, where everyone is trying to outwit one another- I think the fact that it is such an expensive city, where money, status, appreances, who you know is super important, etc make people act like that. There's a guy I know, Chinese born in Toronto but who lived in Montreal for a long time and he told me, every time he visited Toronto, to see family, friends, etc, all his friends talked about was money, their cars, having a house, etc - and we were all in our early 20s back then, mind you. He said, ''None of my Montreal friends talk like that''. And as someone who is into the music and nightlife thing, something striking about Toronto is that everyone, absolutely everyone in the rock/nightlife scene are on cocaine...which might explain the attitudes and the need for ''energy'', given the stressful, high-pressure life. I personnally appreciate the positive sides of the city, the shopping is fabulous, so is the dynamism but I could never live there.

Things I love about toronto: so much diversity and so many talented, creative, smart and beautiful ppl here, many opportunities to network and meet new ppl, variety of food options available, there are many cool places to check out here and everything is fairly close (kesington market, bloor/yonge, yorkville, st lawrence market, harbourfront, beaches, entertainment district, financial district, eglinton/yonge, finch/yonge, bloor west village, eaton centre, distillery district, etc..) Things I don't love about toronto: everything is expensive, traffic is terrible, the way we manage our resources in the city are not efficient at all, public transit is old/dirty and not enjoyable (TTC), rent is off the roof so u see homeless ppl often...most ppl are just struggling to live, tipping expectations are getting ridiculous, its starting to get over populated in most places, everything is pretty competitive, there could be more good looking men here and the dating scene sucks

It is so important to talk to people! Its ok if a stranger says hello and if the environment is conducive, an engaging conversation flows....GREAT!! Torontonians in general are wherry of people striking up a conversation. There's either an intense negative judgement or the complete opposite, a friendly reception. People rushing around like absurd iconoclast elitists or chill beautiful souls. Safest thing to do is walk a dog. Dog owners naturally trust one another. As if we're from the same tribe - not 'an unworthy crazy'! If you have a dog on a leash, conversations can be had freely with almost any culture (that, of course, respects dogs.) I lived there for 40 years. Best food Cultural communities Great year round events Inspiring fashion Fantastic Art everywhere Amazing Music scene

Im from Montreal. I tried out a trial run in Toronto one summer in July /August since I work remotely. By the end of July I knew it wasn't for me. It lacks the culture and soul that Montreal has and I lived just off Yonge street. It just felt so empty because most young people rush back to the suburbs because its so ridiculously expensive to live in the city. Those suburbs are between 1 - 2 hours to get to by public transportation. Montreal isn't perfect but lifestyle wise, it's way more enjoyable and affordable. Food sucks in Toronto whereas in Montreal we are filled with restaurants with amazing food.

The way you ended this video sharing the story of a homeless man was really something special. Yeah people should never judge unless they know someone, Even then no one should be judged so stop judging and start helping !

Toronto is cold, busy and too commercial. Unless there is a well-paying job or some other reason to live there, it is better to find something spacious affordable and warmer.

I live in Toronto and I am trying to get out of here. This place is terrible. Rent and mortgage are really expensive and inflated. Grosserie is getting expensive. You have to pay for parking wherever you go, traffic is always Crazy and there construction everywhere. Basically every street is under construction. Makes me suspicious between local governments and the construction companies. Most people have too much attitude but sometimes you will find amazing nice people and the variety of food from any part of the world it is just amazing. That I really love. I prefer Vancouver, Montreal, Frankfurt, London England and outskirts of Miami.

@@bmorgado2571 every city has problems it is all city administration and level of corruption. Some one told that the city Frankfurt has no debt they how to manage their finances and their public works while the city of Rome has an uncontrollable about of debt. Toronto is going that way with unnecessary constructions and the real estate developers building super expensive condominium everywhere. I suspect high level of corruption and efficiency in Toronto.

As far as I am concered when it comes to the Toronto,Canada, this multicultural cosmopolitan the largest city out of the Canada, feel like Chicago,IL,the U.S.and New York,NY,the U.S.,but I was used to buy something in the USA if I could go travel around the USA for the reason of ridiculously pricey high sales tax rate with a too high sales price such as clothes, books and other things.

Q: How can politicians be accountable to provide homes for the homeless when there aren't enough homes for people who want and are able to pay for one? Is that a lack of compassion or just having to sensibly prioritize?

Homeless and mental tend to show up in locations they can survive. That’s why you don’t see many (if any at all) homeless and mental wondering on the streets of suburbs and rural countryside. Not because these places are more compassionate and take care of them. It’s because they simply cannot survive in there. They cannot get around anywhere freely and have no access to drugs, shelters in those areas. But in cities they get on transits without paying. Have access to network of drug providers and can stay in free shelters when needed. I live in downtown Toronto. There is a respite center in my hood. Those people tend to hang around in the area and you will find a lot of syringes and needles on the ground. City cores are magnets for that type of people because the services they can access there, not the opposite. Montreal and Vancouver have the same problem too (Vancouver is worst). It’s not unique to Toronto.

Just moved to Toronto a month ago... I love the people at the same time the dark side is lot of mental health issue people roaming freely doing drugs in subways and assaulting innocent bystanders for no reason Certain parts of subway stations are not at all safe like Queens, Dundas, is not safe where drug addicts make it their home

I think you got a very skewed version of Toronto. It looks like you concentrated on the downtown core. Someone said that there was too much cement. Try going outside of the downtown core. Lots of trees, grass, valleys and even wildlife. However even in the downtown there are areas that you can sit in that also have grass too. Just need to look for them. There is more visible homelessness also in the downtown core. Is it perfect, no. Of course not. However there is a lot of food and shelters provided too. Is there enough. Probably not, but there are a lot of people that are working with the homeless too. You mention nothing of that, because it is not always obvious where the homeless can get help, at least to the average person. For the people who keep mentioning the homelessness, what are you doing to help the situation?

What I like in Toronto: Lots of parks and Greenspaces What I hate in Toronto: The North American urban development style. So much car focused, there are no big streets for pedestrians like la Rambla in Barcelona or Istiklal in Istanbul. Also, there is not much local shop culture, like you have to go buy your all groceries in Walmart etc. You dont have your fruitstore and butcher and dairy shop etc.

NGO or GOVT should open shelters for homeless with less intensive work regime. Homelessness or poverty is always there as there comes a situation in life, it is not possible to get out of it for everyone, like disability, illness and lack of suitable opportunity.

The city is currently going downhill, badly. And has been for some time. Unaffordable housing, cost of living problems, there's a mental health crisis in toronto, also people using the ttc as their restroom etc ... not to mention traffic and construction almost everywhere, cyclists interfering, overpopulation, you can barely drive properly, if you do drive. I know many people whove left the city altogether I don't really blame them.
