Me and my family finally escaped poverty 2 years ago. One skill I picked up from living in the slums for 7 years is good budgeting skills. I can memorize prices of a lot of things we need and my parents made me their personal accountant. So far I've been doing good helping my family with spending money and we finally have a nice house and enough money to pay the bills, groceries and even some money left over to buy luxuries for ourselves :)

I remember paying Rs 5 to sleep in a corner on the floor of a dilapidated hotel in Bombay India as I had very little money in my pocket and couldn't afford a room and had to go for an interview the next morning properly dressed in 1976. I got the job of a refrigeration mechanic and headed to Dubai the very next month. My life changed after that. I built a career in which I progressed from Mechanic to Technician and a few years later from Supervisor to Technical Sales Representative and again a few years after that from Sales Executive to Sales Manager when I finally retired in 2015 after 38 years of working and enjoying an amazing life. Got married to a lovely Filipina. Currently, I'm retired in the Philippines! Oh! What a blast it has been! I'm proud to say I did it the hard way but it paid off.

My business grew by word of mouth! I was born in poverty, now im a business owner & built an upper middle class lifestyle. Make more money than what i know wat to spend on. So I saved it & i have funds to cover years of expenses even if i dont step foot back into the work place. I have no worries about affording things. Overcoming poverty is possible with THE MIND! I did many of the things he's mentioning here! It's good advice in this video!👍

Good job, but I disagree fundamentally with this video. The majority of people born into poverty are never able to gain the money needed to pursue an education. Often times poverty goes hand in hand with broken family relationships and poor health which can affect people by adding overbearing responsibilities. Finding a passion even, if you have no time or energy to pursue what interests you becomes almost impossible. The rat race society forces the poor to run keeps them in their tracks, often binding them by high housing and transportation costs. Having lived in NY I imagine that you are familiar with all of this and could see how condescending this video is. I was born on the coast in California, and housing should never be more than 50% of what you can make.🤦‍♀️

One of the lessons I picked early in life was to save maximum before marriage. And by God it was one of the best one. I used to save two thirds of salary at that time. I invested the same in a diversified MF. My patience was tested in year 2017, when my portfolio was down 30%, but still I continued investing. After foreshortening, I used to save on an average 60% of my salary (crazy right!), but my first big break came in 2019 in stocks, with the help of a full service broker , I had accumulated enough money to retire! I booked profits and reinvested according to change in objectives I am living a happy and satisfied life! Thanks for the content. Keep them coming!

What it took me: Holding two jobs - one with mando 10-12 hour days, plus a p/t on the side - for about half a year. I'd sleep 3 hours a night for 6 days a week - one day where I could sleep a full 8, and another where I did my laundry. It also took a gym membership for showering between jobs. The degree of work it takes is extremely unreasonable, and to get there today, you must be unreasonable as well. The real gap to jump is the $16k-$48k/year "middle income trap." If you're really crossing your t's and dotting your i's, you'll need an income above $50k/year just about anywhere you go in the states now; and financial assistance programs cut their qualifying range somewhere around $16k/year. So if you're somewhere in the middle, you can tread water for awhile, but don't let yourself become complacent with that. All it takes is one disaster - family emergency, car malfunction, some disaster like that - and it could level you back to nothing. Build circles of support for this kind of thing, especially where you're working.

More like creating kids out of instability. If you get married to someone who is stable and you are stable, then you can co-raise the kids. And pre plan how many kids you want. And have a nice sized support system for you all. I know a gal that has 5 kids, is married, has a masters degree, hubby has a masters degree too. They both come from large and educated families. Saying that poor ppl are poor because they don't have "street smart" and "common sense" is just a way to say to the poor that they are too lazy to be rich. Poor ppl, in the contrary are one of the least lazy ppl in society. If there's one thing I feared most about and that would be my "FUTURE". Honestly, I'm way too far from my ideal future because my current job pays me a minimum wage but I'm still grateful and also I'm trying to save money as possible as I can. Thinking about what my future would become is so damn stressful upon knowing that my current financial capability is barely sustaining my daily basic needs. Sometimes, I feel envious to other people bcuz they aren't thinking much about this so called "FUTURE". I'm not criticizing them for who they are bcuz that's how this world works nowadays. People around me would always say enjoy life bcuz you only live once and they meant it by spending money unwisely. And that's why it isn't surprising when only few succeed. Verily, I'm not obsessed aiming for greater heights in life, just an average life is enough (not scanty by any means). Right now, I think I'm successful already because I'm still breathing, I'm healthy and guided by our almighty God.

Years ago, back in the 70's, a co-worker friend of mine approached a guy he knew who had a wife and 5 kids, and had always lived in crushing poverty in the poorest part of our city. They barely had enough for the family of 7 to eat. My friend told the guy that our company was hiring a lot of new workers, and all he needed to do was apply. He had no real skills, but he was hired 3 days later, at a good rate of pay, with benefits. After he'd worked about 5 weeks, he failed to show up for work for 4 days in a row. Worried that something drastic may have happened to him, my friend went to his house to ask if he was okay, and why he wasn't showing up for work. The guy told him he just got tired of getting up at 6:30 every morning and working for 8 hours all day. For him, poverty was a choice he made for his wife and kids. The hard truth is, everyone in poverty has made choices that put them in poverty.

While your not entirely wrong with what you’re saying, it has no bearing on the question I was responding to. But let’s be honest, most of the people of the world live on less than the equivalent of US $5 a day and much of that is unrelated to the colonial period. There were large chunks of African countries that were huge farming centers for the world and then the governments ran out the farmers and replaced them with people that had no idea how to operate a farm and countries such as Zimbabwe went from being a top 5 exporter of wheat to one of the largest importers in the period of about 5 years. To say they are poor because they got colonized 200 years ago is ludicrous.

I think those of us who grew up in real poverty tend to have a strange relationship with money. We either spend all of it like there's no tomorrow (which was my problem), or we hold on to it so tightly that we refuse to even buy necessities for fear that we'll be poor again (which was my husband's problem). I wanted everything I felt like I couldn't afford when I was poor. My husband wanted to turn off the water heater and take out the light bulbs when they weren't in use to save money on utilities. Overcoming the poverty mindset is the toughest part of moving out of poverty.

Think of what people need and focus exactly to get what you want..if you are able to think differently you can become successful...now that our opinions and ideologies abt life abt success comes from the environment we grew, the people around us,social media etc..so we should discard everything we have heard and seen and therefore begin to decipher our own opinions and the best way possible on how to improve our situations..that have hit me hard..

I remember growing up in the poorest country in the world, I was so hopeless of ever getting rich that I got depressed. I studied so hard but I knew my school colleagues will always be ahead of me because their parents had money and connections. Till I got a way to move abroad, work even harder and save 90% of my income by living extremely frugally. If you know where you come from, you'll work hard to get your family out of it. That's why I'm sharing my journey so others can learn

To be aware of & use this advice: In your early childhood, you needed a parent / caregiver / close friend that knew at least some of this information and supported you in this way. You could not have done this on your own. Absent such early childhood conditioning, you could have learned this as an adult if you were taught to be open-minded & curious. A person in poverty is so overwhelmed with surviving that focusing on the issues & advice discussed here is basically impossible w/o a lot of support & help from a life-competent person. Being born into poverty is like being born in line to step-up to the batter's box while others are born on 1st, 2nd or 3rd plate! Peace.

I am going to comment before I even watch this video. First is education, then don't waste what little money you have on wasteful things like smoking, drinking, or drugs. Eliminate the thought processes of blaming everyone else for your problems. Stop blaming your parents, whitey, the government, well you get the idea. If you live in a poor country run by despots, where you don't have access to education it is virtually impossible to escape poverty, like much of Africa but anyone can escape poverty in the US if you are not physically or mentally handicapped and live in the US and are still living in poverty it is your own fault. Accept that reality and stop blaming others. After watching the video I couldn't agree more, a great video.
