Javier Mercedes not really. Your title says it’s what it takes to film a podcast, which is very untrue. An iphone or two and two lav mikes with natural light could work too. Not as well but doable.

I believe there is a crossing of the line for podcasting, what I mean is once you Film it, it becomes more of a Film Set rather than podcast. The whole setup is similar to th as t of an interview or talk show which basically can fall into filmmaking scenarios. As I've discussed with many others, in film, when discussing or sharing information with viewers, eye contact is a critical component to the process whereas Podcasting only revolves around audio without visual content unless it involves a stationary backdrop.

Your content seems really cool and pro, but (take it or leave it), just viewer perspective the desktop mic stands are really distracting and because of placement and perspective, they seem really extra large and like they are really an important part of the story/message(?) There are a couple effective alternatives to your approach (if ur still using those...just realized this is an old vid) seems like a low profile boom arm (lots to choose from including something like the elgato wave etc) would let you keep the mic on axis but get the mic out of yours and your guests faces a bit. ps, i'm a full time sound engineer (last 27 years) editing/mixing for tv and film and music. DM me if you have any specific questions and bout my suggestion Happy to

I subscribe to your channel. Yet this is the first I looked through a whole show. I watched your backup video which was great thanks. Yet I noticed you had two XLR LINES into the base of your Zoom H4N. Which is your back up recorder. Where ate the going. For me either I would have go out to my ATEM MINI PRO ISO VIDEO SWITCHER. Which has two audio ports on it. At this point I have only used one of the audio ports. Yet with this work flow you have showed me. I think I might want to see what happens if I use my line our from the bottom of my H4NPro into these two-audio ports on my ATEM mini pro iso video switcher. I also have a external SSD hard connected to my ATEM mini pro iso video switcher which record everything.

Starting a video podcast is my passion project. I have content I am very passionate about producing but I don't know anything about the equipment that is required. Thought I'd just need a camera and a microphone, but looks like I'll need wayyyy more than that. This video was great, but I am even more intimidated now than I was before watching. Looks like I'm also going to need a filming studio bigger than the space I designated in my living room.

Thanks Harvy! The double battery works for a podcast, and the other Sony has a Wall DC plug in battery. Only thing to notch there is focus. And you can never have too many backups, especially if you are a single cameraman/audioguy/ on camera talent type of show.

Saoirse Ní Cheandaill I used to work there, I no longer use that space. I use a smart phone all the time to video record my podcast if one of my cameras go run out of battery or space. I think the air pods would sound fine recording a podcast. There are some great mics out there under 100 bucks and I would focus on good sound then video.

Thanks for the video! Right now I only do audio only, but I would like to get into video podcasting as well. Im using a Rodecaster pro and wanted to see if you could suggest a good software? Ive never done video before, but I am assuming I can use the rodecaster pro as my interface with a video software correct? Also, I have a go pro that I've used on vacations and stuff and wanted to get your thoughts on if that would be good to start with and if you think the quality is better than an iPhone X? Any advice would be much appreciated.
@JavierMercedes
@JavierMercedes 5 жыл бұрын
I use premiere pro as my video editing software. I haven't used the rodecaster pro before but it should interface with premiere pro just fine. Go Pros are great because they are wide angle, if you put facing both of your profile views (ie. you are sitting at a table with a guest across from you) it works just fine. My suggestion would be to use both the iPhone and the go pro. If you have a interview type of show have the iPhone be a single shot on the guest while the GoPro shot has both of you in frame.

Hi, how did you power A7SII, by powerbank or dummy battery? And what cabel I need to have to connect ZOOM H1N to H6 and make up backup file? Finally, what volume settings are you have if using cloudlifter? For multiple headphones I'm going into Behringer Microamp HA400.
@JavierMercedes
@JavierMercedes 5 жыл бұрын
In this video I am using the original a7s, not the two, and it is powered by dummy battery for one and dual slot for the other. On the H6 there is an 8th inch line out jack at the bottom. This is completely different than the headphone jack. Take a normal 8th inch to 8th inch cable from the h6 line out into the 8th inch stereo input of the H1. Just make sure to adjust the output settings to the proper volume accordingly, My first couple records I was outputting to hot of levels to my backup. I use a cloudlifter now and on the h6 it sits at 4 most of the time, without the cloudlifter I would have the h6 hovering between 61/2 to 7.

Quick question, so I'm starting a podcast I'm confused as to how to record.. do I use this zoom h6 thing? Use a DAW? Both??? Also I need a mixer, would you recommend using a Rodecaster Pro and recording everything on there? I'm going for the least post production work. Should I do the Rodecaster to the SD card? Or what would you recommend
@JavierMercedes
@JavierMercedes 5 жыл бұрын
I haven’t used the rode caster pro before but it is a one stop shop for recording and mixing all in one. The h6 is also a recording and mixing all in one. Your DAW would let you edit the podcast. I like the h6 because it can be battery powered and can go anywhere. I’m not sure about the rode caster but if you are recording all your eps in one spot you won’t have to worry about that. Rode makes great products so it may be a good option. At the time of recording this video the rode caster pro was not out.

Javier Mercedes right on! I have some LEDs light currently. Was wondering if I could get the grids separately to help focus the light like the Divas? And thank you for the quick response!

Man, material moves so fast now I’m not sure the best answer. I got my degree in music technology from Ball State University and till this day it was one of the hardest things for me to do. The biggest thing that helped me though was the internships and relationships I built during that time. I made an effort to get a paid internship at a place where I wanted to work and did everything I could to get the spot. If you work diligently and knock it out of the park people will notice and offer you more when the situations arise. This may be too much info but one of the things I’m proud of as an intern back in the day at a recording studio was getting the owners to see the value in purchasing new toilet seats because the ones in the bathroom were disgusting. The owners didn’t notice because they never used that specific bathroom but once they saw it they Greenlighted the purchase right away. It doesn’t seem like much but it shows that I wanted to go the extra mile for their customer base and deliver the best experience or “product” with the responsibilities given to me. When I graduated I freelanced for a bit and they asked me back to start recording smaller sessions to give me a shot. Once I did well there they would give me more responsibility. Until eventually I’m in the room being a recording engineer for Morgan Freeman, Katy Perry, 2 CHAINZ, and even recording former president Jimmy Carter’s audio book. If people see you do good work you will get noticed and get your shot, what you do with it is up to you. As far as a major goes something in media technology can help you get around the right people but always remember to show up and you will get where you want to go. Episode 1 and I think 15 of my passion in Progress show would be good insights into the field. I link one in another comment. I hope that helps Devvoon!

How do you connect the zoomH6 to the other zoom device?
@JavierMercedes
@JavierMercedes 5 жыл бұрын
Run a normal 8th inch headphone cable from the line out of the h6 into the 8th inch stereo in of the H4n. The jack is underneath the stereo XY mics. It takes the place of the xy mics in the recorder then.

I think you prob spent too much on equipement and time working for the content. Instead that you could stream it on streamlabs, use your phone to control de cameras, also your computer would record it on your pc, and you could just cut small parts to post it as single small videos. I spent about U$400 on audio and U$1000 on cameras video capture card to build everything. You prob spent 10 times more to get almost the same result. Btw my setup is for 4 people.
