What it Takes to Power The $13 Billion Aircraft Carrier

Aircraft carriers are among the largest human creations of all time. Out of all of them, the one that stands out the most is the USS Gerald R. Ford - The Largest Aircraft Carrier in the World. With a length of a whopping 1092ft, height of 250ft, and displacement of almost 100,000 tonnes, it’s incomprehensible how incredibly massive it is. It constantly houses over 4500 crew members and can also carry up to 90 different aircraft!
However, what makes us even more impressed is the fact that this behemoth of a ship manages not just to move, but to achieve impressive speeds of over 30 knots, which equals to around 35 miles per hour! And as impressive as this all sounds, we honestly expected nothing less from a vessel that cost upwards of $13 billion to make and develop!
To make things even more grandiose, the USS Gerald R. Ford is expected to be in active service for 25 years before being refueled, and that’ll only mark the end of the first half of its life cycle! So, on that bombshell, we have to ask ourselves: What amount of power does a ship as big as the Empire State Building require? And Where in the World does it get it from?
