That D20 gag legitimately happened to me in a game I was running with a new player. He was on the other side of the room each game, and or about 3 sessions he was always upset he was rolling so low, and we chalked it down to being unlucky, He never figured out why he couldn't roll above a 12. I eventually asked him about it and watched him roll initiative one time, and saw he picked up his D12. I pointed it out and he said "but this is the die I've been using for all my checks".

Storytime: I made an Inkeeper that was based on an Elementary school teacher we all know and hate. The personality, face and attitude. The only difference was that in game, she was a dwarf. This one time, the Dragonborn Sorceress (with a +5 to strength instead of charisma for some reason) was fed up with her raising the price for everything after an argument, so she flicked her. I asked if she wants to roll for damage or just leave it as a non damaging attack. She asked to roll. Nat 20 + max 1d4 demage. It was session two, so I fudged the Inkeeper's HP and said that she was severely injured but lived, so the players weren't executed for murder after two days. Otherwise, the Inkeeper should've been dead like 2 times over. I think I should've let her roll for it.

Starting at Lv:1 with a party of 3 as a first game for them and me as the DM was probably a bad idea. But they're close to Lv:3 and got another player. They learn pretty fast. We go over rulings and combat together learning as we go. Sure, even I make mistakes. It was a bit too late when I learned that a creature/player attacking a prone target that is within 5 feet of them is an auto crit. Luckily for the Bard, being kicked to death by a group of five Gargoyle's isn't the most heroic way to go.

I made a mini-adventure that's just a random abandoned house the players find. There are a few secret doors and the only combat encounter is a rabid rat in the basement. Ooof. I try to steer new players away from full caster classes, ESPECIALLY cleric and druid because of how complicated they are. Have you tried buying/making spell cards for her? Or maybe shelling out for DnD Beyond? (It is SO NICE to be able to click on the spells on my spell list and know exactly what they do) There are also a bunch of free dice rolling apps that clearly label dice and automatically add up the total of your rolls, making damage calculation a lot easier. Maybe see if she'd like using one of those for a while to help her learn dice types? Good luck with your mom and don't give up! I wish my mom wanted to play D&D with me, instead of constantly dropping snide comments about how I'm not going to have time for my hobbies anymore now that I'm a "real adult". @@ToxicSunrise132 I suspect it largely depends on the new player. My first character was a warlock who lasted all of six sessions before dying an inglorious death. She was replaced by a druid, who definitely lasted a lot longer, until she died in the last round of combat fighting a beholder. And then my third character was a light cleric, who was maybe my favorite to play. He lasted all the way to the start of the final boss fight. (When we started our new campaign I made a ranger, and I’ve been playing him for about a year and a half now. A trick I do when teaching is arrange the dice from high to low (percentile gets grouped with the d10 since you only ever use it with the d10). Makes it easier for a newbie to intuit the die they need. I did this myself when I was learning.

I was forbiden from playing DnD when I was a kid because my parents were the people who thought it was evil. I am struggling SO HARD to understand the game now but this stress is the entire reason I've avoided actually going to any games or joining anyone. I'm pushing 50. I don't want to be this guy. I'm binge watching You Tube games and stalking reddit subs. I may actually try to step out and watch live/join games soon. My area has an RPG shop with live games.

I recently ran a one shot for my mom who is completely clueless when it comes to games. She caught on really quickly though. The thing she had problems with was the roleplay as she was not really sure what she was allowed to do thinking there was some unwritten rules you could only do certain things. The one shot was not properly designed for one person so I had my own character to guide her and nudge her in the right direction at times but mostly she was the one investigating and leading the charge. She had a ton of fun and enjoyed it quite a bit.

As someone who recently started DMing for a group of 6 brand new players, this is very relatable. No one knows whats going on. But no-one has died or really hurt any innocent people, and there have been many laughs. Cherish the newbies, everyone. Soon enough they'll turn into either murder hobos or power gamers. And then you'll wish for the good old days.

Lol I did tons of research before my first game so I wasn’t as hopeless as this, plus watched some KZbin videos on how to play so I picked it up. My only issue was sometimes I would forget some of my abilities and not utilize them fully. I’m getting into the habit now though. I play gloomstalker and had a habit of forgetting my dread ambusher let’s me add extra damage if it’s still my first attack and I hit. That’s one of the more consistent examples. Luckily everyone I play with was very helpful so we’re happy to gently nudge me to double check wording to make sure I got full use out of my character in a turn. I really love playing with this group!

Personally, if I were a DM, and I'm trying to introduce a player (or players) into D&D, I'd run a campaign consisting of a series of one-off sessions designed to gradually introduce the player(s) to the mechanics and possibilities of D&D in a manner similar to playing through an extended tutorial that runs through multiple levels within a video game like, say, Portal. The 1st session would probably be about the player character(s) being sent to the entrance of a cemetery, having been summoned there for one reason or another in order to investigate why weak zombies, which the players would most likely fight and defeat easily, are being spotted within the cemetery, and possibly put a stop to whatever, or whoever, is causing them to rise. The 2nd session would probably focus on non-combat-related tasks within, say, a village or city district, such as interrogating NPCs (perhaps bribing or, if they seem troublesome, intimidating them for information) and/or investigating places for clues (possibly requiring some stealth and lockpicking), all in order to, say, find out why zombies have been appearing as of late. The 3rd session would probably focus on gearing up for the planned trip to a more distant mausoleum that's been rumored to be a hideout for an evil cult of necromancers, with hints that the trail has been plagued with roaming zombies, bandit ambushes, and wandering monsters, necessitating that players would need to acquire numerous items for the trip, mostly mundane items, though with plenty of utility for creative players to explore, such as medical kits, food and drink, pen and ink, parchment, lots of rope, a 10-foot pole, a map case for holding scrolls, some mountain-climbing gear for when someone wants to climb on a wall (or create a tripwire sturdy enough to topple an ogre), some chalk for making markings on floors and walls (or, when ground up, for blinding an enemy), some candles or a lantern for lighting up dark rooms, a fishing pole for, well, fishing, a bell for use as part of a tripwire-triggered alarm (when combined with rope or string for example), a bag of flour for countering invisibility, and horns or whistles for long-distance signaling (to name a few). Although players would usually need to purchase these items from a marketplace, these items could also be acquired through being rewarded for performing good deeds for people, persuading people to give them up for free, or for a discount, or simply stealing them without the owner noticing. The 4th session would probably focus on the trip to the mausoleum, with players stopping to hunt and forage for food and drink, players being alert for ambushes, whether traveling down the road or setting up camp for the night, players having the opportunity to bribe or talk down bandits in order to deter them from attacking the caravan, players fighting off some enemy encounters, and players possibly capturing some of the bandits for later interrogation. Finally, the 5th session would focus on using all of these items that were acquired back in town, along with whatever skills and spells the party has at their disposal, in order to infiltrate and traverse the mausoleum however they want, whether it's to bribe their way inside, fight their way inside, lure out and knock out the guards before sneaking inside, or climb over the wall to sneak inside to name a few. Once inside, the players would need to use their skills and items to search for and disable traps, open locked doors and chests (through picking or breaking the locks), sneak past and/or knock out enemy patrols either stealthily or openly, map out the maze-like interior, light up dark rooms and corridors, listen for powerful monsters, set traps for powerful monsters, and ultimately confront a cult leader who's serving under an even greater BBEG. Afterwards, I might let the party decide on what to do next within the wider campaign world, whether it's to set up a base of operations for, say, maintaining security within the local area as, say, a newly-appointed local lord, continue taking quests within the local area, and/or seeking out the BBEG in order to defeat them.

Literally this is what i felt when I instructed my friend to D&D because he wanted to play it for the first time. He did not listen well (because he never does lol) and he just looked at his phone for memes on google. Me and my other friends told him to actually play serious after he chose to become an attack helicopter instead of a male or female. This could be the most accurate video of D&D I have ever seen...

This is honestly how my first two campaigns went as being the new player with not understanding anything and no one teaching me, and getting frustrated with me not learning. Both of the characters died early on and after they died I didn’t play another session. Then I met a new DM in college, and he was such a drastic change. He formed the campaign specifically for new players and has been amazing so far in helping us make sure we’re all understanding, and he helped us make our characters and character sheets instead of us trying to do it on our own. We have our second session tomorrow, and since session one went so well I’ve been doing everything I can to learn more and research about my character and how to play it, so much so that he’s let me change a couple of things that we originally came up with together, even though I’m not supposed to be allowed to change them. If you’re starting out, it may take a while, but find a DM like this one, who is willing to take the time to help you understand.
