I was a deckie on a 378 for 2 years while waiting for MST school. It was worth the wait. After retiring from the Coast Guard I made a very good living based on my oil spill response knowledge. Great video guys, thanks!

As a current nonrate in the United States Coast Guard I found this video helpful. The only things I would include into the video would be stuff like getting duct-taped to the ceiling of the messdecks every now and then after my berthing crew saw me leave my boxers in the head. I mean it was an accident... All seven times. But I mean they had a fair point that I should have learned my lesson after at least my fourth duct-tape counseling. Other than that nonrate life was nice. Well that and the wet-biscuit concilings... And awkard salmon councilings.

Son has been in since 2005. He knew he wanted aviation in boot camp. Had all the physicals done before he reported to the Rush. 6 months later spent 3 months prequalified at Barbers point and then reported to A school in E City. He is now AMTC in Port Angeles, WA. SEMPER PARATUS.

Question. Once you pick a field your stuck in that for your entire career and can’t switch after a period of time. Example; go to Culinary School out of boot camp. Be CS for 8 years, then switch to BM or another field.

Lateral Change Request If you meet all the qualifications. Some people find a love for another track in bootcamp. If you do very well you can lateral. I do not think it is very easy.

So you don’t get to learn what other rates do while non rate and how long does it take for you to get a rate once you go in as a non rate - enlist Thursday and so far I’m going in as a non rate
@Topgear.filmer6 жыл бұрын
CoastRey _ ok cuz the rate he offered me was electronics technician and intelligence specialist but I wanna be on boarding team and do search and rescues so should I choose non rate or one of those rates?

I have a question for bootcamp. I'm a freshmen in high school and planning to go into the Coast Guard when I graduate. If you need pills for every meal, how would you be able to take it, do they somehow give it to you or do you have to remember it?
@evanniko50186 жыл бұрын
I'm mega curious what kind of pills you're talking about. Is it medication? I figured I couldn't be on any medications in the military.

Should I go to the Coast Guard even if I don't qualify for any jobs? (I got a really bad score on my ASVAB)
@shakenama5 жыл бұрын
You can always go MK or BM. Those rates are pretty open when it comes to low ASVAB scores. But talk to someone who is currently still in. It may have changed.

Non rates are universally treated like shit. The key is to remember this and then when you make non com, treat your people fairly. You can still delegate a shitty job to non rated and be respectful about it. When I was a non rate in the Marines, we didn’t have hot chicks like you two. I joined the wrong service ;)

Go in the Navy, Air Force, or some other service. The Coast Guard being such a small service, has less opportunities for promotion. People stay as non-rates, and are used like indentured servant labor, for long periods of time. If you go into another service, you will go to school faster, and move up in rank so much faster. Do not be surprised if you find yourself polishing brass with Neverdull, and learning the intricate fine details of swabbing a deck with a mop and bucket of soapy water. Also, plan on cleaning the shitters, and working incessantly, day and night to make sure your station and vessel are in excellent visual appearance, so that your commanding officer will get credit from his boss, and thus a great promotion. That's what it really is all about. While you are busy 12 hours a day, scraping and painting, polishing, cleaning, and tending to the hundreds of duties, the petty officers will be fucking off all day long; especially the Chiefs, but hey, you are not suppose to look at that. After you have been in the Coast Guard for a while, try not to talk to people in other services, as when you realize what they do, as compared to your job, it can be quite upsetting. Also, remember, when you have worked all day, you will still be on duty all night, with rounds, etc. Throw in sea sickness, and wet feet in wool socks for days at a time, dramamine patches, no sleep, powermad 2nd class petty officers with I.Q. levels slightly above ambient air temperature, on a warm spring day, and yeah....check out the Air Force. But hey, if you go into the Coast Guard, remember if there is a possibility of rough weather, don't eat spaghetti. it doesn't digest, and 8 hours later, it looks the same going back out, as it did going in. Also, when sea sickness comes about, try to look at the horizon line. Also, remember when swimming in a wet suit, or even a mustang suit, you look like a seal, or walrus, to a great white shark.

Dang so what’s your story? It’d be cool to hear more from your end of things because I’m seriously considering the coast guard over Air Force and army right now.
