No he doesn't. If he had anything, he'd realize it's time to give Superman an off screen death. And bring on Batman Beyond, Martian Man Hunter, and even Dr. Manhattan. How about Cyborg or GL as John Stewart - not Hal Jordan. Out with the old and in with the new! (While I'm not a fan even Night Wing.) Think about it. What new spin are we going to get making SM the star of DCEU? Black Superman? How about Russian Superman? Oh no, we going to get retread of young SM already done on smallville, Lois and Clark, and now what's on WB TV. RIP Superman. All these need to be heavy green screen - cgi, new talent, relatively low budget - less than $150 M per movie. Run times about 115 min to 130 min. All origin stories. I say get Sam Rami to pull off one of his low budget movie miracles. James Gunn can't do everything. Rami Martian - Man Hunter. Affleck - Batman Beyond. Gunn - Cyborg. James Wan - John Stewart GL. They each get $150 M. Let's see what each can do!!! Batman Beyond opening seen - it starts off with BW at a grave stone. We think it's the Waynes. It's SM. BM goes out on his night patrol of Gotham and he has to use a gun. He hangs up the cowell. Fast forward 20 years. And we are high school with Terry.

Exactly, at least I'm not the only one that seems to know that Gunn will have his new universe backfire on him. Even with him ignoring the haters and critics. WB will find out the hard way. They're ratings are already starting to prove it.
@joeboxter3635
@joeboxter3635 Жыл бұрын
@@danielkeller1337 not if he tries to build DCEU on dynamic trio: SM, BB, WW. Look, it was out of desperation that Marvel brought their B players front and center. Spiderman, Hulk, X-Men had been sold. So they had no choice but to bring their A game to their B players: Ironman, Captain America, Black Panther. And bang! Box office gold. That's the same out for DCEU. They going to have to bring their A writing team and A directors to the B-players. Look anyone could play Martin Man Hunter - heck get the guy who played John Diggles on Green Arrow TV. Give him $1 Millon for movie with 2 more movies with $1 million tied to movie sales. He'd jump on it. The thing most of these directors in HW think is stars are bought. No stars are made. Right script. Right director. And some TLC.

He's echoing what I've been saying since the debut of Synder's Superman, the character is supposed to be boring boy scout. He knows he's powerful enough to win 9.9999% but holding back because the more power you have it becomes all the more important that you abide by the more lofty and noble ideals we claim to hold dear.

VERY Well said rob. I (and I am sure other fans have felt this as well) thought Snyder got it wrong the moment he had Pa Kent say that "Maybe" he "Should" have let all those kids on that bus Die. You had a spot on take, and MAYBE just MAYBE, someone high in the DCEU food chain will see this and get the message. We can only hope.

This is pure gold, thank you for this Rob. I would also like to add what Tom King did on Superman: Up In The Sky, because in that story, he was getting pummeled down with lots of cons instead of pros, in order to get back and safe to the little girl (Alice I think if I remember well) but, amongst all the cons, he never quit and was hopeful to get to that little girl and return home. Also, this little girl never lost hope of Superman finding her. So, that's another good example they can adapt to for this newer Superman.

I respect your opinion Rob but I couldn't disagree more with you on superman, I think superman is flawed, because with all his power he can't be everywhere at once, can't save everyone, and since he was raised by humans he has a human mindset. His mistakes are magnified more then the average person since they have larger consequences, his powers and boy scout nature can make him a bit naive to the realities of life for the common man. I think it makes since that he would be conflicted and unsure of himself and constantly questioning his actions, this is why lex Luther is such a good villain because he can make superman question himself sometimes, just my opinion, love the video by the way and I'm a big fan!

Spot on! Excellent perspective on who Superman should be. There's always room for different depictions of the MoS, but this is what we need in the world right now. We live in a new age - a sadly very 'divided world' but all the more reason for the real Superman to come forwards to help bring the best out of people and humanity.

Absolutely! Also, when you think about a happy optimistic Superman makes ZERO sense. He's a fictional character yes but Why would someone from another planet who has taken it upon himself to protect the people who judge fear and hate him be happy? Look at our law enforcement military h*** even your school teacher. They have a job to do and for the most part the people that they protect make that job very miserable. Now expand that to a person who's trying to protect the entire world. I think Zach Snyder's interpretation was spot on although his plan was to bring him "full circle" by the end of the trilogy. I think that if he'd had the opportunity to complete his vision both sides of this Superman "mood" issue would have been pleased.
@alexgsproductions
@alexgsproductions Жыл бұрын
@@keviny704 You missed a key point from your own statement. The reason Superman IS optimistic is because, despite all of our flaws, he can see our potential. And that is his entire driving force. To be better and to lead us by example. You might like the character Snyder created for the movies, but that was not Superman.
@keviny704
@keviny704 Жыл бұрын
@@alexgsproductions He has to get to that point though. Again, I understand it's fiction BUT if you're basic it on his interaction with us as humans he's NOT not anyone else in a position to "protect and serve" for lack of a better phrase is going to be optimistic. I have law enforcement and a ton of military in my family. Although they don't hate people their constant interactions and exposure to the evil man is actually capable of creates a HUGE internal struggle to not turn your back on humanity.

@@keviny704 Yes absolutely and that was the whole plan to deconstruct Superman and rebuild him to the Superman that we know and love. I know he wasn’t everybody’s cup of tea but he more like a flaw character than the brighter Archetype but I still love his version
@alexgsproductions
@alexgsproductions Жыл бұрын
@@keviny704 Being optimistic does not mean he magically becomes Mr Rogers. Of course there will be development as he grows, but hope and optimism are traits ingrained in him from birth and reconfirmed when he learns of his ancestry. You are trying to humanize a fictional alien too much. He's called Superman because he is better than us. Despite that, he still has optimism and hope that Humanity can be better as well.

WB take note Comic book fans know exactly how Superman should be depicted. He is the light, the ultimate fighter who would die trying to protect his immigrated world. While I do like your ideas, many people have completely given up on DC and James Gunn, including me. Now I know a lot of people like to bash Zack Snyder for his depiction of Superman, on how dark this version is compared to Christopher Reeve and Brandon Ralph. But a lot of people miss the point when it comes to Zack's vision of Superman. First of all it wasn't even Zack's fault for making Man Of Steel as dark as it was because Warner Bros told him to make it dark and follow off the lines of The Dark Knight trilogy by Christopher Nolan. Infact Warner Bros did reach out to Nolan to direct the Man Of Steel film but Nolan turned it down and suggested Zack Snyder instead. Now Zack's vision of Superman in my opinion is actually amazing and breath of fresh air. You have Clark who's struggling to find himself and what his purpose is and contemplating with himself if humanity is trustworthy or not and if humanity can accept him. Realistically if an alien with godlike powers revealed himself to be disguising as one of us is definitely gonna be controversial. And if that godlike alien fights other godlike aliens, there's bound to be death and destruction. At the end of the movie you have Superman who's begging a bloodlusted Zod to stop his rampage. When Zod replies by saying never, that's when Superman makes the hard choice by choosing Earth over Krypton, and chooses Earth by killing Zod. BvS deals with the aftermath of Man Of Steel where half the world supports Superman, while the other half absolutely despises Superman. Throughout the film Superman keeps getting framed by Lex infront of the whole world, at the same time Lex is manipulating Batman to take out Superman. Throughout the movie the world begins to turn completely against Superman thanks to Lex's actions. It wasn't until Superman sacrifices himself by killing Doomsday to save humanity. Lex's plan backfires and gets locked up while the world mourns for Superman. In Zack Snyder's Justice League, after getting resurrected by the Justice League (and Lois Lane bringing him back to his senses) is when Clark realizes that Earth misses him and still needs him more than ever. That completes Superman's arc from Man Of Steel. He now has a purpose, he is now accepted by the people of Earth and they need him. This is Clark's second chance. I loved Zack's vision of Superman was because it was a long, bumpy and hard journey to becoming Superman. This version of Superman is not perfect and does make mistakes. It's Snyder telling us that even gods aren't perfect. I loved this portrayal of Superman because he's not immediately the symbol of hope and is on a journey to becoming the symbol of hope. If he became the symbol of hope and the light and colorful version of Superman from the comics in Man Of Steel would have made it very boring. Man Of Steel is one the most underrated superhero films of all time, and BvS (ultimate addition) is very misunderstood. And obviously the Snydercut is just a chef's kiss. Many people are pissed off because Henry Cavill wasn't given his chance to shine as Superman and complete his transformation into becoming the symbol of hope that was set up in Man Of Steel. People also want to see his version of Superman battling powerful villains like Darkseid as well. So for James Gunn to say no to that and fire Henry Cavill and completely restarting with a brand new Superman pisses off a lot of fans (including me) who just want to see Henry Cavill's Superman complete his arc and battling Darkseid. With James Gunn taking over and starting with a young and inexperienced Superman brings us back to square one again. We were going to see Superman battling Darkseid, but none of that's happening and now we're back to Smallville thanks to James Gunn.

The way I would start a Superman Franchise -No Backstory -Make him young, like 27-28 -Use Lois Lane strictly as a reporter, not a love interest yet -Give brief backstory on why Lex Luthor hates Superman -Zod would be the villain of the first half -Have Zod invade Earth but not to terraform it into the Krypton. He’s there to recruit Clark to join him in helping rebuild Krypton on the moon or something like that -After a destructive battle that nearly ends with the planet being hit by a meteor, lex watches the footage and decides it’s finally time to active Project Metallo -Metallo would be the main villain -Metallo shows up to a carnage filled battle scene where Clark is about to kill Zod with his heat vision but Metallo kills him instead with kryptonite powered heat vision. -Metallo nearly kills Clark when he starts to malfunction and flys off back to Lex’s lab -Clark wakes up sees Bruce Wayne -They’ve been friends for about a year since it wasn’t hard for them to discover each other’s identities -No Batman yet -Bruce gives Clark a speech about how to balance his life between being human and being Superman, which is when he officially gets his name -Lex sends Metallo to find Superman but Metallo turns rouge on Lex and wants to make the world like him -Superman finally overcomes him by punching through his chest and crushing his power source, a kryptonite stone -Superman collapses but the suns shines on him and he rise to space let’s the sun bathe him - He comes down to earth and is interview by Lois Lane -He says call me Superman and flys off -Credits roll -Post Credit scene is Lex in contact with an intergalactic being. This being tells Lex he failed and he’s not pleased with his efforts. Lex tells him he still has one plan left. We see Lex turn to look at a chamber and on a screen we see it reads “PROJECT DOOMSDAY” -END Oh yeah and I would call it-Superman: The last Son

The perfect superman movie for me would be one where even if you have 1 or 2 action scenes, the whole value of it is not just a punch for punch no brainer movie, but rather a movie that shows everyone what the meaning of the word "hero" is and how we should be our own heroes on the day to day life without needing to be "super". I adore the video Rob, great job! 👏

I would say that the Superman movie for James Gunn's DC Universe should be Peace on Earth, because it looks like James Gunn is headed to a Justice League Kingdom Come!!!!

I honestly Love this video and your take on the character. While I agree that the films lacked hope and a better tomorrow I feel they were trying to hard to modernize and make the character socially relevant due to majority of people not typically being "Superman fans". I feel that the films were too polarizing maybe because it held a mirror to us as a society. It showed our projections onto him and tearing down of people with little to no facts behind us. While I do want to see a Superman that is hopeful and looking to the light I don't know if we in the real world setting would be so open to him which is probably why I feel Man Of Steel and BVS were so dark. I am not sure if they should have started him so dark i feel that there should have been hope before showing superman losing hope... Just my feelings on it at least.

No, no. You're on to something here. I get it. People wanted a hopeful Superman, and you're correct, MOS, and BVS, we're darker in tone, thus forcing us to look into a mirror and face those demons. But that's precisely the problem. What are Americans good at? Running away from problems and denying reality. Right? Zack snyders MOS and BVS forced audiences to answer this question: are you brave enough to face who you are? Perhaps people should look deeper, because there is always hope in Snyder films, you just have to turn on that part of your mind that can both experience a good comic book movies, while also massaging that deeper part of what Snyder's movies represent: a thorough looking glass into the human condition. That's okay. Don't be afraid of that. Because it is through facing that, that we can now be better, and more hopeful. That was what Snyder's 5 part Superman arc would have been about. Him coming back from death in JL and MOS 2 would have given us that hopeful Superman. To me, that's some damn good storytelling. And DC is the perfect vessel to tell stories more in line with adult themes. That's why I like DC, precisely because it's not marvel. Or shouldn't be, anyway.

This is where I’m at. With the way the world has been and how people treat each other……is humanity a lost cause? Or even worth the effort especially if they’ll see him as an alien and treat him poorly.

Zack’s Superman is exactly what we needed. Your argument in this video essay has the biggest blind spot…the intent of his story arc and not being able to identify that, missing the debacle of meddling from the studio to screw the actual story arc, and the finalized Zack Snyder’s Justice League (being the midpoint) does not show an understanding that is dynamic but rather a premise of an argument that is a bit less than comprehensive and w/o heart. It’s a big miss. I don’t think we should decide what Superman should be. It’s the story that is. This was very incomplete in its argument.

@@criticwhosalwaysright1404 Yes! No one wants that, and no one did. If Majority of people accepted that iteration of Superman/Narrative, there should have been a Man of Steel 2 and 3 already. It didn’t take 5 Captain America movies for him to be fleshed out as a character. Marvel doesn’t blink and all DC has at this point are two black eyes.

The movie was very underrated in my opinion.Alot people won't let character evolve or get a different take on the character. Folks love Batman now but before that he was a corny character until he got dark now he is the hottest thing in DC. Comic fans want dictate how comic book movies should be made because of the books they saw as kids. I dont really have much faith in Gunn when it comes the Superman movie character
