The animated series were very pivotal for me becoming a fan of superhero adaptations. In general, the animated content was a treasure, it just went so far over the heads of Hollywood back then it seemed like they really didn't get it. The talent for writing good stories was there instead they just gave animation the brush off entirely thinking it was just for kids, but the older fans who were watching the cartoons at the time just knew that their medium being mostly ignored in the live-action films was a big mistake.

Animated stuff still does not do well in theaters, unless specifically targeting a younger audience. People in the US still have the false impression that animated means cartoons and thus is for kids. One of the reasons I used to love watching animated super hero stuff growing up was because not all the stories were just for kids. The story moment that stood out most to me growing up was when Darkseid came to metropolis and eventually forced to leave, but before leaving, he killed someone in front of Superman and then left before Superman could do anything about it. I remember Superman losing it an destroying a car because he failed to save someone. @@undeadtrooper13 So that's why he was/is still in season 3? As fan of books I didn't even finished second season so if he really cared he would left franchise long time ago or didn't even played, I wasn't even big fan of season 1 also (mostly because of changes). Also for season 1 he got 800k$ per episode, for S2 he got even more 1m$ per episode which is more than GoT cast was earning and the end of series. So we can easily imagine for season 3 he earned even more. So there is possibility during negotiations for season 4 he wanted so much money Netflix didn't/couldn't pay (I don't judge him for wanting more) and Liam Hemsworth is much much cheaper actor. So during (or before) season 4 "negotiations" very likely Amazon contacted Henry and offered him much better deal (lead actor + producer) and Amazon can literally afford any price. Additionally as producer he has more control under production (casting etc) so taking this deal was no brainer + he was warhammer fan longer than witcher. And in the end contracts can't be done that fast aspecialy for "actor + producer", so Henry and Amazon definitely were talking months in advance before he officially left The Witcher.

One question though: is it okay to rewrite a character's origin if it feels off? What if a character is beloved to you, but you feel that the story is terrible? That's how I feel I would write obscure characters: the character is great, the potential is there, but the story is either outdated or doesn't ring true to the character's core values and personality, so it's best to either axe them completely or rewrite their story in a way that makes sense and lives up to the themes of the character. They also made me think that Metropolis was West Coast while Gotham was East with Central City hiding around Kansas City. Speaking as someone who loves to write, this is honestly really good advice you're giving out. I know a great many people might think it SOUNDS dumb to not have a plan (if the fan reception to the New Star Wars Trilogy is any indication), but, honestly, not having a plan doesn't restrict you creatively; I do still stress the importance of good note-taking, but basically just don't overthink how your story is gonna go: it frees up room to do what you want, when you want, how you want, where you want, why you want with your characters and the world they're in. I'm not a professional writer, though, so take my advice with a grain of salt. ;)
@Saphia_ Жыл бұрын
I find that that's true with so many creative professions. In everything that has editing in its process like stories and design, for example, it's so important to know the basic outline of what will happen but one, figure out the details as we go and two, never be afraid to try something new.
@steelhert4363 Жыл бұрын
Now that is an advice I wish I had. I've been working on a new book for a while now, and in my mind I had completely mapped out the story despite knowing that I tend to bring good ideas when I go with the flow. I have always been a fan of the story bible. That way you have liberty to be creative, but you dont go against characters basic personalities. i will also say, when it comes to a franchise as large as Star Wars, I am very surprised that they didnt have it all planned out to the decimal point. I guess some people thought the property was too big to fail.
@bluestreaker9242 Жыл бұрын
@@doro626 Yeah, that's a solid suggestion, yeah. A lot of famed authors swear by the story bible. I recall reading somewhere that gave this gem of advice: "planning out the story bible should not be more important than simply writing the story". Basically what I've been saying: don't overthink things, just roll with it. Keep things consistent, absolutely, but don't overthink things. You don't want to back yourself in to a creative corner and give up on the project because keeping the momentum going is too daunting a task. :/ Funny that, Star Wars was plagued with problems since the beginning; it's amazing this single film got a franchise, and even got off the ground, on account of how much went wrong even before filming started. For instance, George Lucas was very much an idea man, but he wasn't much of a writer, so he got the help of a ghostwriter to weave his ideas together: Alan Dean Foster. Fun fact, in an interview, he was asked if he ever felt bitter about George Lucas taking all the credit, to which he responded "not at all": I won't lie, I respect that, as I feel most people would be.
@sihly_me9386 Жыл бұрын
I'm glad that this is the advice that Mat mentions when it comes to mapping out a story larger than a single movie, book or whatever because I'm currently going through this "note-taking", "go with the flow", "not restricting creativity" process with my OCs. I have them in my head, I know I'd like them to crossover in some way (I have a very heavily influenced superhero comic book crossover type universe, like Marvel), I have the basics for the universe they live in, but stuff like they're origin stories, character arcs, how exactly they'll crossover, or what type of media I'll introduce them in is up in the air but still being thought of in the back of my head, and I can come up with may different iterations of each of those aspects I've mentioned and go with it. Since, I've had these characters and this universe for over 2 years now, I've gotten used to feeling free to change characters names, which is really something I'd usually not be comfortable with (also a good 99% of my OCs don't have names, so as I develop them more I'll be to narrow down a name that actually makes sense for each of them).

He literally used it as a basis to point out why his Batman kills, but in that same comic Batman literally breaks a gun in half and calls it a coward's weapon. But him saying something like "Tom King's run on Supergirl was my favorite comicbook last year", really gives off the vibes that he does love and read comics.

Just hearing that one of the series ideas is titled Waller has me excited. Amanda Waller is constantly seen as an antagonist to overcome in the Suicide Squad films (both live action and animated), but the drawback is that her character isn't fleshed out in favor of whoever is on the team this time. As the only character guaranteed to be present in the franchise every time, I like the idea that she can finally be the focus, maybe with a rotating cast of villains under her command. Also gives DC a chance to float villains to the audience and see who might be worth a film down the line.

Just saying, from my experience, not sticking to the source material can also be a good thing. Take Hilda for example. The comics never had too much to offer and the cartoon offered more. There was also the cartoon adaptation of welcome to demon school iruma kun, which had chronological order changes. There were also a lot of DreamWorks films that may have changed the source material a lot like Shrek and the boss baby as well as laika's Coraline. Other examples I can think of are Netflix's sweet tooth, marvel's moon girl and devil dinosaur and Amazon's The Boys, which had took a rather big turn from the source material to make their characters new stories and paths. And at the cream of the crop you have stuff like who framed Roger Rabbit and The Mask.
@ScoutBostonAnonStuds Жыл бұрын
I feel like that can vary depending on the quality pf the source material. The Boys source doesn't have quite the same depth compared to some of the sources for Batman. And hence the lack of quality is the reason why the writers had to deviate, otherwise they would be stuck with something mediocre.
@requiscat0in0pace48 Жыл бұрын
I absolutely agree with what you mean, but I think the difference lies in how big and beloved an IP is. If an og story is already good, recognizeable and dear by quite a big portion of the audience, then changing it would be more detrimental than anything. While if the source material is already not that impressive/popular then it's obvious that changes need to be made. Comparing Hilda's og comics to Superman's isn't really going to be very accurate. In short, don't fix what's not broken
