Biden is from a generation of politicians who were completely ideologically committed to maintaining American military dominance over the entire world, and seeing Biden willing to say literally anything to defend Israel is a reminder of that fact. I mean, all politicians do that, but I think most do it because they have to, whereas people who were around between pulling out of Vietnam and the end of the Cold War genuinely believe in it.

I think it has more to do with the older generation’s insanely hokey views on Israel, the Holocaust, and religiosity. There are many reasons for this, mainly the staid media environment back in the day, yes the Cold War as well, but I agree with you that Biden’s generation was quite chauvinist when it came to the global south even if they didn’t use overtly racist language. It’s stunning to see the change between the “moderates” of the 1970s/1980s and even the younger paleoconservatives today

Many politicians who are otherwise even pretty progressive take weird stances in this conflict because of the historical backgrounds. Like for example an otherwise pacifist green party German MP standing behind Israel almost unconditionally. It's very weird to see.

As a Muslim who grew up in the wake of 9/11, my community broadly decided that we should focus on being good American citizens and good Muslims first and foremost and distance ourselves from Muslim governments and political groups abroad. The idea that we would need to bind ourselves to like Saudi Arabia for protection is absolute clown shit, especially if Saudi was almost entirely dependent on us for its military power.
@duckheadbob
@duckheadbob 8 ай бұрын
The reason this doesn't work and it slightly does for isreal is because Saudi Arabia wasn't founded in a direct response to massive genocide of its people while isreal was. Can you guys seriously not understand the logic behind "isreal is a safe space jews can flee to in the event another genocide happens"? That's what's being said here. Especially when our last president dined with neo-nazis, and called them very nice people while they marched through Charlottesville screaming "blood and soil" The founding concept, regardless of how it turned out, is fundamentally different for isreal - and an inability to understand that doesn't make you a better debater against their current actions. None of what you said or what vaush said here would sway a pro-isreal jew, it would do the opposite.

The history behind Liberia and Israel are insanely similar. The free black Americo-Liberians were very similar to the Israelis in terms of how they treated the native Liberians. No American history book talks about it, they just vaguely talk about it being founded in the 1800s, and later Marcus Garvey and move on. They never talk about how the resettlement led to an authoritarian apartheid like system. That got replaced with the authoritarianism and genocides of Sam Doe (who Regan backed), and that got replaced with the world's most insanely violent civil war, led by a psychopathic warlord, Charles Taylor, who eventually won the presidency with the campaign slogan "he killed my ma." and even after they got rid of him the bullshit continues.

Four years ago most people would have just brush it as "ah, silly Joe, he is so old, but he has a good heart, he is just a bit senile and confused". Nowadays we know that it is not a mistake, what he said is what he meant. - Context matters. Saying that All lives matters before BLM was a thing would have been an uncontroversial take. No? It's not? Your analogy and vaushs about Saudi Arabia are just straight up false equivalencies because neither of those two countries were founded as a direct response to a huge genocide of their people. I don't support what isreal is doing but I'm not gonna mis-understand the message here out of spite. Also the idea that America is some safe space for jews when our last president dined with neo-nazis in the white house and how they influence a large amount of talking points for the republican party is just being willfully ignorant. Another genocide could happen and that's idea behind isreal IN CONCEPT - it's place jews know it won't happen and can flee to if the need arises. It's not some psychotic anti-American statement. Not understanding the rational behind this statement won't make you a better debater against isreal, it'll make you weaker on that front.

I’m as pro-Palestinian as anyone else, but let me make this point (and I’m not trying to argue here, please feel free to push back) I think the fear of Jews being potentially unsafe in the US, or any country outside of Israel, is, like many fears, born out of the trauma caused by the Holocaust. Because Germany was friendly and open to Jews at one point, and Jews felt like they were safe there. Obviously, the rise of fascism took them by surprise, and we all know what happened next. The fear is that in any country not run by Jews, for Jews, the same thing could potentially happen in the future. Again, promise I’m not trying to start anything here, and I’m open to anyone else’s takes. Just a thought I had.

I strongly disagree. Maybe of those of older generations I can see the trauma of the Holocaust being a serious issue for them, and because of that history that they see the neccesity for a Jewish state. However, in many cases when we talk about this fear, its because since very early on many people in Israel are being indoctrinated with this fear, that if they arent afraid that they will face a second Holocaust. And that all the Arabs hate them, the UN hates them. Teaching people this is very disturbing in my opinion, the Holocaust is also used as an ideological weapon to silence criticism of Israel, which actually is an insult to the memory of those survivors and those who have passed in the Holocaust. So I think this fear is often unfounded and rooted in indoctrination and propaganda. And it seems a logical conclusion to me that if you want to bring down anti semitism and if Jews truely dont want to live in fear, it should end the occupation. If you keep oppressing people, of course they are going to hate you. The occupation is not good for Jews.

That’s like actually true. The original idea of Zionism came about from the Dreyfus Affair, when a very French and very successful French general who happened to be a Jew as well was used as a scapegoat and accused of being a traitor. The news led to violence against Jews all throughout France, and Dreyfus was executed by firing squad. As it turns out however, he was always 100% loyal to France. No matter how French he was, other French people subconsciously saw him as just a “dirty jew.” That was the fear that started it all
