It's a personal choice. He didn't want to get burned out. He's very particular in the types of roles he does, and he wanted to be with his family as his children were growing up.

When he first went to Hollywood his wife had just had baby and the family stayed in Australia. To become a "mega movie star." he would had to have have made back to back movies in the US for years and I'm pretty sure that would have ended the marriage and having any relationship with his children. He always been a person who put family before his 'career'.

I remember him specifically saying the minute he was no longer required on a set, he would be on the next plane out of LA and back home. Not everyone likes Hollywood and it's merely a job

Generally the long term mega stars have publicists who make sure they are always in the lime light. They also tend to have relationships with and marry other big stare and often have multiple marriages or partners which increases their publicity and since their partner is a big star too, every time they have a new baby (if it’s their wife) or something major happens to their partner then more publicity. But if you are married and stay married without regular drama and your publicist isn’t keeping you in the limelight all the time and not always choosing roles that are block busters but rather what interests you or a new challenge then you’re very unlikely to receive the same publicity as the mega stars who are on the cover of magazines all the time and on people’s mind constantly. Check out Eric Bana on Full Frontal (Australian tv show) before he started acting in movies. He was very well known here at that time.

I did stand-up in Denmark. Once. However before I went to the gig (which was being televised) my British friend rang to say he was getting a divorce. I had to see him in a bar. After a few bevvies I arrived at the theatre and my Korean Danish friend said I should have a few of his cocktails before my performance. I knocked those back, and before I went on stage, I met the audience - had them laughing - I was on fire - but once on the stage - I had prompts on my smartphone. I stood there trying desperately trying to work out how to operate a phone!!! Needless to say it was the end of my stand-up career. So I have a lot of respect for Eric - I would also have to say that he made the right choice!!!
