Did Trump really do better or did the trump vote hold steady whilst the democrat vote dipped? If 30 people voted Trump in 2020 and 70 voted Biden the trump’s share is 30%…. If 30 people voted Trump in 2024 and 50 voted Harris then trumps share is 37.5%…. Media would say trumps share is up 7.5 points without actually getting any more votes.

💯 % this, all the narratives about racial, class and other electoral groups shifting are pretty bs, democrats just depressed their own votes, it wasnt a swing voter change. In fact republicans did too, jus to a lesser degree.

The thing is the right wing podcasts naturally blend well with the populist right political parties like the republicans or afd or whatever. They are very on message whereas left wing podcasts aren't naturally aligned with centrist liberal types. Hasan piker isn't 100% pro democrat in the same way that Joe Rogan is with trump. Even Pol Joe which is pretty center left has quite a big gap between them and the labour party

I think Ed's got an interesting point at the start - any moral judgment is not on her as a sex worker, but you could have an interesting moral discussion about being one of the men involved. It's a degree of objectification which removes her agency as a person working, in his mind, and instead she becomes almost a notch on the bedpost. Personally I'm fine with it, but I fully understand and find interesting the moral hesitancy. It *might* reflect something else about male sexual behaviour, and that's worth discussing.

A big area where the democrats lost was in their assumption that race would be a factor in the way people voted and I would say Kamala Harris' being a black woman was a major factor in her being picked due to an inherent "elitist racism" within the Democratic party.
@trevfindley
@trevfindley 13 күн бұрын
I'm not so sure about that. Wasn't a big factor in the way she was picked just that they tried to cling onto Biden for too long, and then didn't really have time to pick their candidate in a more considered way?

The podcast market is over-saturated now. It feels like everyone and his dog has their own podcast these days. I practically had to explain to people what a podcast was only a few years ago, and now they've exploded in popularity. Also, The Rest Is Politics is becoming something of an echo chamber, and the hosts are starting to get a bit too full of themselves in my opinion. Rory and Alastair actually used to disagree with each other on occasion, now it feels like they're getting high sniffing their own farts and patting each other on the back for their incredibly similar takes. I though Rory and Alastair were going to be put on suicide watch when Harris lost, and if they'd actually attempted to look at the political scene in America objectively, rather than how they wanted it to be, Harris losing shouldn't have come as that much of a shock.

All due respect but if you look at the numbers compared to the 2020 election there wasn't much of a shift at all towards Trump. He got about the same number of votes in 2024 as he did in 2020. The election was lost by the people who didn't vote at all. About 15 million additional voters voted Democrat in 2020 than did in 2024. The 2020 election also had record high turnout (about 5 to 7% higher than normal US election) so what it shows is voters saw something exceptional in 2020 that they didn't see in 2024. Maybe it was covid that made the difference then?

The "she's for they/them" line was a good line, it was not 'incredibly powerful', and Kamala didn't run on her gender and ethnic background/ethnicity, it wasn't a big part of her campaign. She was a poor candidate though so I'll give Oli that. Do you remember Clinton? That was running on your gender. She brought it up every time she spoke. The republicans brought up Kamala's ethnicity and gender way more than she did, they basically ran on misogyny.

In America the republicans enhance the conservative content creators even if they're a bit rough and they enhance them but on the democrat side they only get involved with people who are ideologicaly alligned enough. The republicans knew they could reach those who weren't pluged in to politics where the democrats didn't even care to try. Their message was also lacking hope, if one side says, 'Look out for that guy he's bad' and the other side says, 'your problems are caused by imigrants' hey, that might be bs, but at least it's offering a solution... I get being impressed with Trumps charisma especially on tv and podcasts but to say it makes you like him Oli. Shame on you, it makes me hate him more because we know that is literally the only way he gets to where he gets is his charisma but he is a bad guy and shouldn't ever been described as liked unless its I like he did this random thing that actually helped people, you can like what he did but knowledge he's a bad guy and even a bad clock can be good twice a day lol. Anyway Dems definitely lost it because they ran a terrible campaign and weren't left wing like they were supposed to be. Just like Labour over here but at least Labour cold actually point to the other side and say look what they done. But you can't do that in USA especially when your actually in charge at the time. It was so disheartening to see the weakness of the left and how they have eroded themselves into corporate oblivion and irrelevance. Way I see it the American system is competely broken similar to ours but in slight different ways and it's just going to take a restart, which unfortuantely I know will not be done until the system literally crashes and burns and they'll attempt to keep it on live support for as many years as possible to keep their imaginary infinite power going until it fine cant. It's depressing but there is hope for something new, every big empire has fallen nothing is ever permanent or forever so lets see if it happens in the next 10 year or the next or the next. At least I can come here and laugh with the crew as it slowly happens around us all.
