I made a documentary on PopCap itself if anyone's interested. I tried to take as much of the criticism as I could so there's no overextending or straying too far from the topic displayed in the title, as a lot of people have been having grievances with the fact that this retrospective video goes over the full story. Check it out if you're interested: kzbin.info/www/bejne/moG9l6mhqr9jd7s CORRECTIONS: PopCap were *technically* the ones who had complete control over whether or not to add microtransactions in PvZ 2. EA just published the second game while giving PopCap a massive incentive to make a lot of profit, causing them to descend to greedy methods. Something I had also forgotten to include was the input of George Fan. He was the one who implemented a lot of character into the first game, and his lack of involvement for the second game could be a possible reason for why the game has a different (not necessarily worse) feel.

I think the reason Garden Warfare was well recieved was that, despite the feel changing massively, it was still a "tower defense" game in spirit. It's jsut that now, you control the towers instead of a omnipotent builder. This especially applies once you start strategizing in the game. That could be a reason why Garden Warfare was well recieved, but Heroes is forgotten.

People often forget PvZ:Heroes exists, but imo it did a great job with its artstyle. It mixes nicely the respective artstyles of both PvZ (cartoonish but weird and a bit gritty) and PvZ2 (softer cartoon), and then adds a dash of super hero comics art to make it its own unique style. And it fits pretty well! The new plants/zombies fit well enough, while the returning ones take cues from either PvZ1, PvZ2, or other sources like PvZ Adventures (the weird facebook game?)

when it was announced that plants could level up in pvz 2, I was very excited, but later I realized that it was probably the worst thing that could happen to the game, not only because of more microtransactions, but also because it removes more solids as a game and as an initial concept with which it had to end.
@zxKAOS1
@zxKAOS1 2 жыл бұрын
The leveling system for me give it a fresh new layer of gameplay. However, leveling up the plants was very grindy. I calculated that it'd take 5 to 6 years to level everything (and this wasn't even including masteries). Somebody else posted online something similar, so I wasn't that far off :\ I played the game for 3.5 years on and off, had A TON of fun with it, but had to delete it out of sheer frustration and disgust.

@dustymcwari4468
@dustymcwari4468 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I was excited about that because the Chinese version had level ups since much earlier, and seemed super cool, especially when I liked grinding for gems and pots at the infinite gauntlets, and later worlds were just pretty tough for most plants, but it turned out being another kind of grind altogether in the international version, you didn’t get anything from beating levels, you needed to get seed packets, that were only found as specific rewards or randomized in piñatas, I tried to get my plants upgraded without spending money, but got tired of that very quickly, it sucks how limited it is if you don’t spend a lot

It feels very disingenuous to me to say that EA had no role in the downfall of PVZ. In addition to George Fan being laid off due to visionary differences, there are also two interviews (can’t link in the comments of course) that suggest EA played a heavy role. One employee said that the CEO of EA at the time brought up the idea of “rentable plants” because of a suggestion from his child, and another employee said that they suggested making two different PVZ games, one closer to the spirit of the original and the other with more monetization. That employees idea was disregarded, and they were taken off the PVZ2 team and later asked to leave the company.

Your video is still accurate if you remove the EA part, though I imagine they still played a role in some elements in the games. I agree eitherway. I used to think PVZ was a franchise known for not having a bad game, I enjoyed all the games, until 2019 came around with BFN and PVZ3. Ironically, I think Popcap didn't do enough for the franchise and separated their fanbase too much. Consoles and PC were part of the original success, there is nothing wrong with the Garden Warfare games, but for tower defense fans, they were left in the dust. To this day, there's still not a traditional tower defense pvz game for these platforms. Hell PVZ1 isn't even available for modern console platforms, except xbox backward compatibility. Merchandises of the franchise also declined immediately, for a game that has a similar appeal to Pokemon- Popcap never took advantage of it; you can only buy chinese bootlegs of the characters. Plants and zombies are perfect for marketable plushes, they could've had a good source of revenue with this and establish more of a stronger connection to younger audiences collecting them. There's so much Popcap could've done but I think being slow and failing to take advantage of things (except microtransactions lol) is what left them in this position. For fans of the franchise, there's little for them to stay around for because of how slow popcap been for the past years. That's probably because Popcap has so many restructures in the past year.

PvZ 1 was the first PvZ game I played but I have always loved PvZ 2 more, even after controversial updates. I love the extra content to do after Adventure Mode. I actually bought a PS4 simply for Garden Warfare 2 and I had no idea what type of game it was. If it wasn't for GW2, I might never have gotten a console. GW2, despite being different, instantly became my favourite game and replaced PvZ 2. I have loved all the PvZ games made, even BFN but I feel that BFN is to blame for many problems. Getting rid of variants made BFN like any other shooter and the overall design for the game was a downgrade. I think that in order to revive my and many others favourite franchise they need to make GW3 and build upon GW2 and listen to player feedback. They also need to make desperate changes to PvZ 3 as right now it is pretty meh and won't be enough to bring back the franchise.

Something important about the first game: You’re constantly unlocking plants which either solve a problem which has just been introduced, or make it easier. You get potato mines to deal with Pole Vaulters, and then afterwards are rewarded with the Snow Pea as an easier method of killing them. You get the Fume Shroom telling you it can go thru screen doors, and immediately are faced with screen doors. After you struggle to kill miners with starfruit, you’re given the more effective Split Pea. I could go on with literally every time you get a plant. Yes, some plants are more useful than others, but every time you get a plant, it’s helpful for the very next level
@T3rr0r626

Absolutely. PvZ 1 has at least 1 or 2 plants that can foil each special type of zombie, thus allowing for options. Another example would be blover replacing either cactus or plantern. Although you have it backwards about starfruit since you actually unlock it after split pea.

While the second game does require you to spend $150+ to unlock everything, it still has enough content to be fun. And as gw2 does have paid stuff, its only for cosmetics and plant variants. no, it genuinely was popcap. ea isn't responsible for microtransactions, popcap planned it from the very beginning and multiple former popcap devs (INCLUDING BOTH JOHN VECHEY, ONE OF THE CO-FOUNDERS OF POPCAP, AND GEORGE FAN) confirmed this. if i linked the google doc with a bunch of quotes disproving the ea claims, youtube would auto-hide my comment, but if you do want to see it, please lmk and i can send it over discord or something. if anything, ea boosted the franchise and we wouldn't have had most pvz games without them also, for ads, literally just turn off the wifi. i'm not going to defend modern pvz2 but 2016 pvz2 (when modern day came out but before leveling and all of the scummy stuff) is leagues better than pvz1 imo

I can definitely agree that I could have (and should have) gone into more detail about the game design behind all of the games after 2. The issue is that I only give myself one week to make these videos, and that means I have to spend more time on some parts and less time on others. I got bored of writing the script by the second half so I somewhat brushed over the shooters and heroes. I’ve actually never played any of the shooters besides the first one and that definitely shows. It at least explains why I was unable to actually “review” them. So I instead just went over the impact those games had.

I'll be honest that when I played PVZ2 back in 2013, I just fell that the magic that made the first game so special (I played the hell out of it on X360 and DS) was gone. Granted, this was around the time I began middle school, which was also when I realized that everything just didn't feel _right_ like it used to.

I actually loved PVZ2 and back when it came out I played the hell out of that game. Each world felt like a new experience and where quite fun to explore. (Except beach day, I still got PTSD from how GOD DAMN HARD IT WAS) and the bosses offered good chalenge. Sure the increased variety of plants meant that some where uterly useless, like the peashooter but I didn’t realy cared that mutch about it. Also removing the purple lants was ofr me an upgrade because I hated that system. You wree alreday extremelly restricted by the a,ount of plant you could take in any given match, and they serevd to further restricted your ‘deck’ and their ice age long cool down was enougth to earn my scorn. So I would say good ridence. The only real downside is that I was almost required to pass by the pirate world in order to get the dragon mouth (back then it was one of the most broken plant in the game) as it single handedly made game so much easier. I stoped playing it for a while (I got bored like I always do) and tried to return to the game at one point. And by that time paid plants and mastery level had showed their ugly heads. Man I miss the older game, defenitly not what it used to be.

In the almanac, it says that zomboss is trying to conquer his local place of smh. Moreover, we can see chinese zombies in the bottom of the achievement section. So it shows that there are more and different zombie groups and bosses all around the world. I think it would be fun to have a game that we can travel the world with our seeds and save people from zombies. We could find new seeds too. We would learn more and more about how Zombies first appeared and who's responsible for that and the last boss would be the one who created zombies. Yes, most of the fan theories says that Dave and Zomboss have a big role in that but what if they wouldn't? What if the one who created bloom and doom co. is someone different than we thought?

I really want to emphasize how great the Garden Warfare franchise was until Battle for Neighborville 'cause I'm pretty sure it formed part of a lot of our childhoods. The first Garden Warfare was, for me, the first ever shooter I ever got to play in console and ultimately made me fall in love with that Plants vs Zombies was as a whole. My parents were extremely restrictive with the content I consumed as a child and forced me to play games only according to my age, and Garden Warfare was the closest thing I got from a shooter like Call of Duty or Halo, for example. Garden Warfare remained somewhat friendly for my age, and I remember making a lot of friends back then and even use the public voice chat just to have fun and it was AWESOME. It was very addictive, there were so many gamemodes, and the maps felt dynamic each time, either as a plant or as a zombie. I really didn't care too much about customisation, but the diversity from plants and zombies was for me the cherry on top. I have so many fond memories with the game that I would even consider play my PS3 once again only to play Garden Warfare for nostalgia. For Garden Warfare 2... that's when I felt the game fell flat. Way too many plants, matches fell over saturated, mechanics shifted a lot, if not entirely, and all the maps really didn't click with me. The first game was so simple yet so compelling, keeping you hooked even after hours of playing and the simplicity from its formula made it enjoyable for a younger audience, but as for the sequel, it felt a bit TOO much for me as a kid, and since haven't given it a chance to try it. Nonetheless, it was a huge success and took a very important part on the boom the franchise had on the modern console era. Seriously, if you haven't played Garden Warfare, play it or look up some videos about it on KZbin. It was very fun and was a very crucial part for me on my gaming experience and would recommend it to anyone. Thank you for the deep insight on the video for the rest of the games!

I think what killed the game was that EA regarded the group of players that played the first PVZ as a collective group of gamers overlooking the exclusive groups that exist within the group. Making the sequel a mobile game only alienated the PC and Console players. I played the first game on PC then was forced to switch to mobile for the sequel. I had to improvise and force the game to run on a PC. The sequel was great and better than the first one content wise, but the whole idea of playing a mobile game on my PC was too much to ignore and the magic was lost. Only went as far as PVZ2.

Kinda sad that it ended up like this, especially with PVZ2 effectively just becoming a game with very little other content to do besides grinding for seeds or going through the Penny's Pursuits attempting to win with very little post game material outside of those and a seedium plant. This game has a place in my heart even if I reluctantly tolerated its boring new content for a few years and me getting Origin solely for PvZ and Insaniquarium (which I greatly regret now). China's a bit better at new content if it weren't for the fact they literally can't code at all.

This is the most "gaiming youtuber" take ever. The franchise wasn't fucked by EA, on the contrary, Popcap addead microtransactions because they wantead to, and withouw EA we wouldn't have games as big as pvz2 and the shooters. The packs in GW1 and GW2 server as a good pace in progression. Spending money is idiotic considering how easy it is to get packs( every 10 or so matches you can unlock a new character, depends on how you perform). It isn't intrusive in any way. Pvz 2 isn't impactead by microtransactions that much, considering how a lot of the premium plants are preatty shit( plus it's trivialy easy to edit your save file if you want to use them). The games sure as hell aren't dead, with GW1 and GW2 still having considerably large playerbases even on pc. Pvz heros still has a ok community considering it hasn't gotten any updates, and pvz2 is still getting new updates with plants, and a new gamemode recently.

I never said the franchise was ruined by EA, in fact I said the contrary. The PvZ series hit it's peak relevance after the launch of PvZ 2 (which was after EA bought PopCap). I have no idea how GW1 has any playerbase on PC since it's not on Steam but people still play the second one because it's replayable and just on overall quality experience. And also the series (while not necessarily dead) is without a doubt nowhere near the cultural juggernaut that it was once revered as.

I saw this game on an internet ad back when pvz1 had just sprung up on pc. I garbed my grandpas laptop being I was there at the time, and took my first search. That night sat playing till the dawn and never even made it to the pool area due to game development not being completed up to that point. I could be completely wrong but it felt like it could have been a flash game or on flash games. But I just remember the iconic cattails that I was always hyped to get even to this day are my favorite plant to date. (Which sounds weird to say) needless to say this game is extremely fun and is still worth playing, not for the graphics at all but the simplistic game play mechanics. Wow I ramble

I'm 28 and PVZ was a good part of my childhood, however I gotta say something maybe not that liked, especially with nostalgia. PVZ was nice and a ton of fun. Especially without internet it was one of the best games alongside Age of Empires 1&2 and CS 1.6 Portable, however 2 was where I spent a majority of the time. Not that I spent little on PVZ, but I spent so much time on PVZ2. Since I played it so much, I also went through multiple parts of it's history that allowed exploits, meaning I was not really troubled by pay 2 win plants because I managed to obtain them without paying. 1) There were more levels. Yes, they were repetetive, but being a mobile game I wouldn't pull this one out just to play instead of gaming on a pc. Well, okay, eventually I did because it was so much fun, but if you pull it out 2-3 times a day on the train or toilet, you are not really bothered by the levels not giving a big boost. 2) They had a ton of super fun and creative levels you just didn't have in 1. Also some incredibely frustrating and stupid ones, but beating them felt so good. 3) My favorite part: the weekly competition. Now this is where exploits come in. Here you would compete until you lose. I don't remember how it worked, only that you were playing for a streak and then rewarded based on your placement, which was given based on your streak level you reached. You were deemed to fail, but there was a bug in the game that would allow you to continue forever. I sadly don't remember it. In fact, I think I created a Reddit account ONLY for that purpose, let me scroll through it. --> I was wrong, but here are some of my posts: The fights were against bots. Right, now I remember a lot. This might sound bad, but it was actually good. This meant you were also in brackets with a ton of bots and would often end up winning if you figured how to get high streaks, which felt very rewarding. Just imagine thousands of player competing for a top 10 reward. Regardless, reading on it you had to pay gems and I remember the bug involved not paying gems or rather earning more than you had to spend. The bug involved going infinite and while you only earned a few of them (I think like 1 or 5 every x rounds) this would mean you had infinite attempts. 5) My main issue was ads not showing up. Believe it or not, that was a post I made on Reddit and I do roughly remember it. Ads were integral to play more and they wouldn't load for me.

I used to imagine there would be different worlds like PvZ2, but with different types of undead. Mummies for Egypt that could leave curses on your plants, Vampires that could turn into bats, etc. All requiring different plants with new strategies.

For me PvZ2 is still one of my favorite. Yea it has its own problems but the boss battles in this are amazing. One of my favorites is probably from Neon Mixtape Tour as that whole world is pretty unique with its whole music mechanic. Also it sucks that Battle For Neighborville is the only PvZ shooter to come to switch. I recall watching some gameplay for Garden Warfare 2 and it looked so fun but I don’t have an Xbox, and this is coming from someone who doesn’t typically play shooter games
