Something I think I should applaud The Emoji Movie for is the character designs, not the quality but the quantity. The designers had to design HUNDREDS of distinct background characters based on existing emojis alongside other properties, and honestly that is a feat in such a rushed movie.

I feel like the plot should go like this: Gene messes up his first day of being used as an emoji, and feeling disappointed in himself he goes to the workplace to send a proper meh emoji with the help of his childhood friend, high five. But he ends up destroying the workplace. Everyone tries to find out who did it and out of guilt he tells his parents (who work for the smiley emoji) and then tells him he is running away so no one finds out. But the smile emoji was stalking them and sends robots after him and the parents, knowing this, try to get to him first. Remember, the entire emoji hq was destroyed by gene, so the teenager using the phone wonders why and asks his friends, and they think that his phone got hacked and he should get a new one.

I sat down and watched the entire Emoji Movie one day in 2020 or something. What I felt was... exactly the same as when I watched Bee Movie. A soulless, generic, cookie-cutter film of "everyone needs to work together, but it doesn't mean you can't stand out". The funny thing is, Bee Movie does it slightly better than the Emoji Movie, but barely. That's really what it is. The Emoji Movie is just the Bee Movie in disguise.

Oddly enough, it seems like since the emoji movie came out, Sony has consistently made good movies. Movies like Spider Verse and The Mitchells vs the machines were amazing, and hotel Transylvania 3 and others have all been at least pretty good. This might be because there was nowhere to go but up after the release of this movie, but it’s still an interesting observation.

3 to be exact! That's (in my opinion) why people should hear me out. If I'd just seen it once while barely paying attention it would be easier for me to ignore the bad aspects and just say "no". But because I had to watch it 3 times it's easier to see the many many flaws with this movie. But no matter how many times I see it I still think it got too much hate. When it first came out (and even now) it has the stigma that it's the worst thing humanity has ever done when that simply isn't true. It genuinely got more backlash than Cuties, which should literally be a crime to watch.

I think we saw this on a school field trip, and while I liked it, I’m certain there was at least one person who thought, “This school needs to make better decisions.” I honestly think schools should let the students throw out some suggestions for a field trip, instead of having quite literally no say in where the school wants to take them. Or better yet, create a list of like five special places, and let students vote on one of them. Also throw in the first idea, and that possibly could work. The place that got the most votes is where they’ll be going. I get it, the school’s in charge and all, but that doesn’t excuse the fact that this should exist, or exist in a more prevalent form.

Even when I first watched the movie (and actually liked it because I was like 9-10) I still thought something was wrong with it, that it deserved more. I really wanna remake the movie so that it’s actually good. Also, does anyone realise how good the movie would be if it were 2D animated? That would leave so much more room for creativity and would be so cool even if it had the same plot. Claymation would work as well. I personally don’t think it really deserves to be CGI, it makes it so cringe and it’s just that ALL of these movies are CGI. Why can’t we go back to 2D? Maybe even a 2D TV show like all the others, I DON’T KNOW? The cringey CGI would look so good if it were in 2D or Claymation and would block about the stupid story, is what I’m saying. It deserves a remake.

i watched it the other day and i didn't hate it. it was just alright. i agree with all of the negatives you listed but there were a few positives: 1. a few of the jokes were funny. i liked the idea of emoticons being the elderly. i thought the scene where hi-5 says peace sign only gave him one finger was funny too, and i actually liked the part where he ate the candy. the line delivery when Gene said "wow" was really funny. i also thought poop saying "oh sh-" was kinda funny, though it probably wouldn't make me laugh again since it wouldn't be a surprise. finally, the idea of the poop emoji being a english gentlemen rather than a rude nasty character was interesting and kinda funny. 2. the animation was pretty good! scenes like the spotify boat ride looked great! some of the character designs were pretty good too, especially the robot ones. 3. uhh lol there's no third thing sorry anyway overall it wasn't a very good movie, but i do respect the work of the artists who made it. i think it's important to look at the good as well as the bad! also good review! you were pretty fair towards it
